This is a really nice quest story that for a change has a girl as the main character. There are some grammatical errors and it could use a better editor, but it's still a good read. It's written for teens, I believe, so that explains some of the attitudes Shade displays. She is a high school student, pulled into an incredible world and started on a fantastic journey to save the Seelie Fairie Court from war by retrieving special waters from a fountain that only a mixed blood person can approach--someone like Shade. She has a number of companions who help her on her journey and she learns many things and faces deadly enemies while seeking the magical waters. This is supposed to be the first book of a trilogy, but I noticed that there are at least four books in the cycle. I'm not complaining! I'm a little confused, but happy that the story goes on in more books. Some questions are left unanswered in this book, so perhaps the next book, "Ever Fire," will answer them. The pace is rather fast, with few breathers and the main characters are well developed. Shade starts out a typical high school girl, rather prone to curl up with a book rather than go hiking, but her situation gradually changes her to a physically stronger person, more aware of nature.
I think girls might like this because it is a quest book with a girl as the heroine. And although she doesn't want to be doing many of the actions she takes (and complains about it), she does what she has to. She gets the job done, like it or not. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, "Ever Fire." I suspect a few of the situations left open will be finished up, and even if they aren't, I'm sure there will be another great adventure to follow.. Alexia seems to open up a portal that places you directly into the world she has built, so you are there beside the characters, feeling the heat of their sun or the misty coolness of their fog as they rouse an early camp to continue their journey.. This was a very good read and I strongly recommend it.

What a great story, I was hooked from the beginning. Shade, who is half fey, meets queen Zinara and is asked to go on a quest. Zinera explains they need the magic of the Santiran Fountains to have a chance against the armies of the Unseelie court. The magic of the Santiran Fountains can only be handled by a halfling. The journey will be dangerous and filled with peril. Several fey, all with different magical gifts, step forward volunteering to protect and guide Shade on her quest. Does she have the courage to go on this quest? She doesn't even like the outdoors. Will she discover she has magic? This book is a page turner. I kept wanting to know what will happen next!

I have found yet another favorite author to put into my all time favorites folder. I was adopted prior to birth and have known that fact as long as I can remember or for over 60 years. I had a great family, was loved, and had the best Papa in the world; I would not have changed my family for anything. That being said, being adopted there was always a hole in that biological history part of my life. I had dreams and fantasies of being magical and put into the human world. Is it any wonder why I love these types of books? I may not be seventeen like Shade but I identified with her and thoroughly enjoyed her story. I look forward to reading the rest of her story, which, by the way, I have already purchased!
Ms. Purdy's style is smooth and flows easily. I was very caught up in the characters and their trials, tribulations, beliefs, and abilities. I could so easily imagine what the characters looked like, especially enjoyed imagining the teleens with their blue fire and electricity. I first read this book in a collection of six different authors and immediately after finishing Ever Shade, purchased it and all sequels available so that I could continue reading Shade's story. I broke my own rule of when to purchase books and how many to purchase because I so enthralled with this book and was so anxious to continue reading other books by Ms. Purdy. I plan on purchasing her other series when I once again follow my self imposed purchasing structure.
Way to go, Alexia. Absolutely love this series!!!

The start of a series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 7, 2018Verified Purchase
Shade like most teenagers had the usual worries, what was she going to do after high school, would her best friend ever stop getting into trouble and what where the voices in her head. Whilst walking home from school, the voices lead her to an abandon warehouse and the start of an adventure.
At the start I felt that some of the plot did not make sense. Getting drawn into a magical battle and then being introduced to a lightening faerie, most girls would have freaked but Shade took it all in her stride and followed him to the Faerie world. However once I got past that I did enjoy the story. Shade at times showed her vulnerable side which proved that she was not completely comfortable with the task at hand and the news about her heritage. Going on a quest enables the author to introduce us to all different type of faerie folk and I liked that each clan had different powers. It also helps you learn more about Shade and the speculation of her ancestry.
The story is like a rollercoaster and at times it was a good job that Shade was not 100% human as she would have been dead as soon as she walked out the cave. Soap and Jack add some fun and whilst they are older they sometimes act like proper teenage boys. With the addition of Dylan, there is a hint of a love interest and I cannot wait how she explains his appearance to her mom
Whilst this is a good introduction to the series there is still a lot of questions unanswered and I hope that some off them will be in answered in future books. This is ideal for teenagers and anyone who likes the faerie folk

Great fairytale
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2013Verified Purchase
Got this book while it was on offer and glad I did as it was compelling and though the subject was Fairies it seemed fresh and new.
Shade is the eldest child of 4 who helps her single mom wrangle the family together. Occasionally she may be forgotten about but she loves her family completely. You'd think she would never get privacy but she's kept one big secret from everyone but her best friend, that she can hear voices.
On her way home from school the voices lead her to handsome man in an abandoned warehouse who tells her she has to follow him if she wants answers to why they led her there. Knowing that it's probably insane but her only hope she follows Jack through an amazing forest to a large Oak tree and her destiny.
What Shade never knew was that she's half Fae and is the only hope to prevent a War between the Fae that may spill into the Human Realm. With a band of Warriors she treks across Faery to obtain an artifact to save them but with good there's always bad and the opposing forces will stop at nothing to get her.
Really enjoyed this story and glad I started it with my days off so I could read it right through as it was so compelling.
The characters were a great mixture of fun, flirty, moody and mysterious. Some of the warriors you didn't learn much of but there's always room to grow with the sequels.
Shade herself is very funny. She's obviously scared and confused with not only learning she's Fae but that she's got some fairytale quest to go on. Her moody teenage tantrums were very amusing and relate-able. Great leading lady in my opinion.
Her sort of love interest i'll leave as a surprise as I thought it could possibly be between 3 of the Fae men during the story.
There were a few editing errors but nothing major. Glad I got the novelette aswell so I had something else to read when this ended. Suitable for all ages and very enjoyable. Will read the rest!

Enjoyable read

Shade is a 17 year old school girl, struggling to do well at school and especially close to her best friend Brisa, who stands up for her friend against those at school who find Shade odd. Shade's heard voices in her head for as long as she can remember and, as she walks home from school one day, her over worked, widowed Mum having forgotten to collect her again, Shade is compelled to enter the basement of a warehouse. There she witnesses a strange battle between Jack, a faerie, a Teleen with the ability to send lightning bolts of energy from his body and Evangeline, a one time 'good' faerie turned bad.
The voices have guided Shade to Jack for a reason and he duly accompanies her through the forest, underground to the faerie realms. Shade learns the truth about her family history and the ongoing war between the faeries and agrees to help. A number of characters are introduced to accompany Shade on her quest to the Fountains of Santiran (too many beginning with 'S' for my old brain to picture them all and hold them in my head!) and her journey as a halfling on a mission begins.
I enjoyed this story very much. A few times, I found the descriptions a little long and found myself skipping to get on with the story and other times, I felt there was rather a lot of 'tell' rather than 'show' but, overall, this is a well conceived and compelling tale.

A little Fey, a lot different.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 15, 2012Verified Purchase
It has taken a while for me to read this, due mostly to that pesky little thing called life getting in the way.
The book starts out slowly, easing you into it, then before you know it your hooked and there's no escape. And i guess that's pretty much how Shade feels.
Shade is just a normal girl who hears voices in her head, voices that go quiet when she does as they say. Its these voices that lead her into a building where she finds Jack, who Shade soon discovers is not human. Jack leads her into the woods to find someone who might help her with the voices, before she knows it Shade has discovered that is in in fact part Fey, and is soon recruited into a quest for the good of the Seelie faerie court.
I have read a few Faerie books before and while they all seem to stick fairly close to the same rules, they are essentially different. One can argue that there are only so many ways to tell a Fairy story, but Alexia Purdy has managed to pull off something unique.

Shallow, self-absorbed 'heroine', story underdeveloped and lacks substance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2014Verified Purchase
Oh dear, I have never seen an author use so much snickering or sneering by the lead characters who are supposed to be the good guys, including the lead girl. Snickering is defined as "to make a short, quiet laugh in a way that shows disrespect" for example. This author has managed to make me a well seasoned reader, dislike the lead girl (who is supposed to be the heroine) because she's made her out to be a shallow and self-absorbed girl. There is good material here, possible good story but author needs to hone her writing skills. I will not be reading anymore of her books in the meantime.
