The authoritative work on nations and nationalism

According to modernists, nation is a recent phenomenon, emerged in the 19th century Europe, and before that common, shared identity did not exist, except maybe among the elite. Traditionalists, on the other hand, hold that some kind of shared identity preceded modernity.

After overviewing the different views regarding nations and nationalism and introducing the concepts, Prof Gat discusses the role that ethnicity has played in the formation of city-states, nation states, and multiethnic empires. He rejects the modernist view and argues convincingly that ethnicity is primordial, it was important even in the city-states and multiethnic empires, moreover, nation states did exist in the premodern era.

I found his definitions of ethnos (“population of shared kinship and culture” p. 19.), people (ethnos which “have a sense of common identity history and fate” p. 22.) and nation (“people become a nation when it is politically sovereign, either as a dominant majority, Staatsvolk, within a national state, or as a politically central element within a multiethnic state or empire” p. 23.) particularly useful and they provide a solid foundation for his argument. One of the many strong features of the book is that the focus is not restricted to European events only, but basically covers the whole world.

Please note that I am not a historian, only interested in the topic and have read some of the classics (Gellner, A. Smith, B. Anderson, Kohn etc). It is somewhat surprising that there has been only 1 review so far, that is why I decided to write a short one even though I might lack the necessary training in the field.
