In this omnibus of Marching Through Georgia, Under the Yoke and The Stone Dogs, S.M. Stirling traces the rise of the Domination of the Draka and its long struggle with the United States and the American-led Alliance for Democracy. In this alternate history, the Americans who rejection the Revolution did not scatter to the four winds and Canada; a slight change in the course of events brought them to the new Crown Colony of Drakia instead... starting with the Cape of Good Hope and soon encompassing the whole of the right subcontinent of Southern Africa. Soon burning resentment and limitless ambition spurred the expansion of the people who called themselves the Draka.

There they built the Domination, an empire of inconceivable wealth and savagery, founded on conquest and slavery. It grew until it spanned the African continent, and then in the Great War of the early twentieth century, to include much of Asia as well. In the Eurasian War, Germany and the Soviet Union exhausted each other and the Draka stepped in, leaving the Domination triumphant from the English Channel to the China Sea. Only the United States and its allies stood between the Draka and their dream of an enslaved humanity.

By the 1990s, the Draka commanded the stuff of life itself, mastering biotechnology until they could create new species at will... and transform themselves into the Master Race of their savage dreams. The Alliance for Democracy traveled another path, into the mysteries of the physical universe and the technology based on such knowledge. The final confrontation would settle which was more powerful... or leave the earth a lifeless rock where nothing human remained but bones.

The Domination is a dystopian work of epic proportion. It should be read by alternative history buffs who aren't afraid of less-than-happy endings, complete with a generous helping of gruesomeness served up en route.

However, the story should optimally be read in the format of the original three novels, of which this book is only an abridged compendium thereof, because a good deal of important background information in the form of prefaces and appendices, which were included in the original texts, are missing in this volume, and those missing components do constitute a significant omission. You simply don't get the full context of the story as originally intended. See if you can locate:

-Marching Through Georgia

-Under The Yoke, and

-The Stone Dogs

If you do decide to go ahead and read this version of the story anyway, then you should read the fourth book in the series first (Drakon), in order to understand the point of view of the narrator of 'The Domination', one Henry Carmaggio, late of the NYPD, and currently (as of 2014) the richest man in the world.

Come to think of it, you might actually want to work your way backwards through the entire saga. It is, after all, a tale chock-full of alternate universes and multiple time-lines. Besides, Drakon is arguably the best book in the Draka series - if you like that one, you'll probably want to read the rest as well.

My Favorite Military Fiction Series. SPOILER FREE

Red the first one of these a very long time ago. Saw it in my book case and got the entire series. There is one more after this called Drakon. I recommend you get all of them.

Basic idea is an alternative history where a colony keeps slavery and then grows in power. They fight on the side of the allies during WWII. If you love military fiction and like to feel the horror and triumph of battle, this is the series for you. This rates up with Hammer's Slammers as far as getting into the mind of the soldier. The series follows a family, and a nation. It is THE BEST war series of books I have ever read. Puts you in the front line and still provides the bigger picture and fascinating alternative history that really brings home how different our world could have been.Kept me so entranced that I finished the 4 book series in just a couple of weeks. It isn't short. I just read fast and did without sleep as I HAD TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! BTW, this combo only includes the first three books. Get Drakon as well. Totally worth it and puts a very nice cherry on top.

It might seem an implausible way for history to diverge, I tend to think it is only implausible because the Draka are those villains that actually listened to people who critique a movie where they say afterwards, "Wow if those bad guys hadn't done such stupid stuff they would have kicked the good guys butt."

Draka are Austin Power's Doctor Evil if Evil had his son's pragmatism.

They are what happens when the Bad guys are:

1. Dedicated to a singular goal without allowing infighting to distract them.
2. Focussed on the long view.
3. Intelligent.
4. Lucky.
5. Afraid of what their enemies can do to them if they screw up.

Would love to see these made into a series of movies, but political correctness being what it is, we never will unless we develop PC hardware/software that can virtually create movies as good as the best Hollywood material. Sort of a, "Computer, here is my script (shoves Draka books into PC Scanner), put in John Wayne, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, and Angelina Jolie, pick a dozen other top stars and don't diverge too much from the book but give me 3 intelligent variants." Then sit back as 5 minutes later the complete movie pops onto your desktop.

One of the Finest Series Ever

Written during the Cold War, some said this series was a metaphor for the U.S. and U.S.S.R. The U.S. relied on and excelled in technology while Stalinist Russia tried to change and improve the human body so the could meet their goals. It was intelligently written with plenty of twists and excellent and innovative plot development. Well worth reading. There is another book to the series that is not included with these: Drakon. It is also well worth reading and it did a nice job of expanding the Draka Universe even further. S.M. Stirling also edited some short stories pertaining to the Draka Universe titled Drakas. It has been a while since I read that but as I recall I felt it was hit or miss depending on the story. In all fairness I most likely would not be satisfied with anything unless it was put out by the master himself, S.M. Stirling.

Imagine a book that describes sheer evil as human evil really is: not as a caricature, capable only of evil acts and thoughts, but as living within love and within admirable, even noble, actions and feelings. I must say I am flabbergasted. I did not expect this from a sci-fi novel. Whatever its faults in writing -and the author, although not bad, is at best workmanlike, avoiding purple or turgid prose-, the sheer sweep and concept of the story itself and its implementation bring it to its chilling conclusion: what if the best in us can also be used for the worst in us?
