Though there are some errors in this book that are distracting it was a very quick and enjoyable read. It's clear the writer is a novice, but one that has great potential. For a free book I can't complain! I've read some HORRIBLE books by young indie authors but this is by far one of the best I've come across. Unfortunately, so many poorly written books are available now because self publishing and independent writing is much easier thanks to technology. That's why detailed and helpful reviews are important. Despite the spelling and grammar errors this book kept my attention. One other reviewer complained about the use of "Anyways". That, I didn't have a problem with - this is a young adult novel, and young adults use very poor grammar and commonly use "anyways" as an accepted word. That I felt was just the author identifying with the audience and being age appropriate with how her main characters talk. It's more so the sentence fluency, structure and spelling errors that tend to bother me - which wasn't THAT big of a problem here. Though the Colton relationship was annoying, as others have said, it's very typical for teenagers and young adults to act like they were and be that immature. The fact that the relationship annoyed me means that it was well developed - at least it made me FEEL something. I even shed a few tears for the main character at one point. I connected with many of the characters in the book and was rooting for them at the end.
Despite the lack of writing experience this author may have, she was able to tell a great story in a way that kept me coming back for more. Grammar skills are easy to learn - great story telling is not. Her character and story development was well done and she has me anxiously waiting for the next book in the series. That, for a young self published author, is a huge accomplishment. With a good editor this author could produce five star novels.

1st up - read the books in order as they truly are part of a series and truly aren't standalone.
2nd - the series is just plain FUN for a teenaged girl, but there is some serious violence (including death) so this doesn't qualify for a PG13 rating, in my opinion.
3rd - The main heroine is what every normal teen girl wants to be - beautiful, skilled and gifted in almost every way she could imagine. The main heroine grows in a variety of ways from an "ugly duckling into a beautiful swan" - another aspect of fantasy hope for a teen.
4th - Yes, the author is an immature writer and it shows with poor sentence syntax, grammatical errors up the wazoo (wrong words, missing words, added words, etc.), plus long dialogue where you've no idea who is speaking until the very end ... and so forth.
It all makes for an extremely challenging reading environment and there-in lies one of the major drawbacks of the series.
5th - there are truly some laugh out loud moments. The author has a good sense of humour and allows it to play out through many of the characters in the storyline.
6th - I'm a gramma of a mid-teenaged granddaughter and while I wouldn't want her sleeping with a boyfriend for any reason at her age, I can fully respect that the love interests in this series are ONLY just sleeping together and not having sex until marriage (as far as we know, anyway).
7th and final - Hopefully, this new author will find a quality and qualified editor to attend any future work ... and maybe even tidy up this series of books for future readers.

This story has more action and adventure than many I have read. The prophecy says a girl will be born of two non magical parents and become the strongest mage known. She will end the war. Ryanne is the girl. She has no parents, her dad left long ago and her mother died in a car accident. She is suddenly sought out by the bad guys, who want to use and then kill her.
But Colton, Liam, Claire and the rest of the group protect her. They train her and teach her how to use her powers and protect her mind. She can read minds and all the different voices can suffocate her if she's not careful. She is captured, tortured and rescued. But they are coming for her.
This is a fantastic story and I am engrossed in it.
Read on my friends.

This story had interesting premises but at some points execution was a bit iffy. Ryanne is this loner freak girl that had tragedy in her life and suddenly finds out she’s special.
It was good enough read but it did bother me that at the beginning she was average and ostracized but then when she finds out she’s special, she has several guys interested in her and calling her beautiful. She was weak and fragile then she was shown a couple of defense moves and all of a sudden she’s an expert and we find out she did gymnastics for 10 years. There was no context to that change and it made it look unbelievable.
Also I couldn’t understand why they took her out of the safety of the house and into the woods when everyone knew the bad guys were after her. Of course she got into trouble but I was again baffled because the reason why they wanted her was to give up the names of the others who helped her. Wouldn’t it be easier to get someone less powerful and more knowledgeable for that information? It was really random since we were told that she was the one that’s supposed to stop the war.
It was a good read though. Nicely paced and enough action to keep it interesting.

I loved this book so much that as I'm typing this book 2 is downloading. I love the way the story starts off. It pulled me in right away. There is no lack of cute guys either. I'm rooting for Mr. Quiet and hope Pretty boy doesn't get the girl. I can only keep reading the next book to see. I was wondering whatever happened to the main characters aunt? She had to have come back soon but the main character continued to live with all of the supporting characters. I am a bit confused there. I can overlook that BC there probably is something I misread and with a story this chalked full of super natural powers, action, and romance it wants for nothing.

No craft to the writing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 2, 2015Verified Purchase
I found this book so frustrating. The story is good, I will say that. I did like it but Ryanne (pronounced in a very stupid manner) is childish. She's meant to be 18 but acts like a 14 year old, an immature one at that. Everything cannot be about a single person. Talk about the other characters being side-characters! Also, its hokey kokey, not hokey pokey and she wasn't an intricate part, but an intrinsic part (19% in). The writing lets this book down, which is why its a 3 rather than a 4 star review. And if I have to read 'everyone was staring at me' one more time.....
This feels like it was written by someone who has never written before and if that's the case I applaud her. I would recommend getting an editor and writing as much as possible because you can tell a story but you are in need of learning more about your craft before publishing further. I won't be buying more.

This series is still one of my favourites. I have read and re-read about 30-40 times, I think it’s the innocence vs will of Steele and the f mc is not some simpering barbie although she has known tragedy. The family/friends” dynamic is brill lol moments, aw’d by the lengths someone will go to save someone they love this, their is a couple of of cliff hangers but the series is complete (Although I wish that wasn’t the case I neeeed more) so you don’t have to wait for the next book. 5***

Annoying cliff hanger.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 26, 2014Verified Purchase
I feel a little mean giving only 3 stars as I am downloading the next book and will be reading on, but only because of the cliffhanger ending and unresolved romance! One more chapter and I think this story could have been done!
It is the formulaic teen read: beautiful (but she doesn't know it) teen with a tough love back story finds she is in fact the chosen one meant to unite the mage population against evil!! Add to that a back drop of perfect homes and outfits, gorgeous boys wildly attracted to her (but she doesn't know it), perfect adults and some evil menace in the form of the bad guys and you've pretty much got it!! But, whats wrong with that?! Ryanne is not as annoying as some and I do want to see how she jumps in the emerging love triangle!! If there had been a few more spoilers in the other reviews I might not have read on, but there we go!

Good storyline.

Loving the storyline, could be a really good series but for the immaturity of the main character, and I don't mean like a stroppy teen I mean like a little kid type childish.
While Ryanne is immature she still has enough likability that draws the reader in and makes you want to follow her story.
Well what a cliffhanger that was!

A good read...for young or older adults

I was looking for something new and I found it reading this book. Yes it was a freebie and I was expecting to have to invest in the other three if I liked it. But I liked the fact that it was an easy read with characters you easily identify with and find yourself amused with the witty remarks and friendly banter. The plot is has enough to keep you interested when it may feel a bit of a go slow in places.
But for me, the author has taken all my personally favourite powers, fantasy creatures and book/film references and put them into one book. At first, I thought it was a bit of a rip off but I soon realised if I wrote a fantasy book this is what I would do and it does add to the appeal of the book.
So on to buying book 2...
