- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2015I am a college professor and am currently developing a class on Arts of Resistance where we look at contemporary art history/practice of work that is socially engaged. I have reviewed a lot of books to find materials for class, and this is the best book I have come across dedicated to the art of creative activism. I highly recommend it! We will be using this as one of our 2 main texts in class. The modules are all bite-sized and digestible. It has excellent cross-referencing to connect tactics, principles, case studies, and practitioners. It is a wonderful handbook for anyone interested in creative activism. Will not disappoint.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2013Belongs -- in multiple copies -- on the bookshelves of every social action organization in our not-so-free world. Amazing compendium of practical, proven, effective strategies for fighting for change, created and edited by people who have been on the front lines. Oh, and carry around a couple of copies with you so that the next time someone whines, "I know, but what can I do?", you can hand them this book and say, "Pick one, and get to work." Great list of social change resources, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019Ordered for my social psychology course! This book is rad and very well written. Great read for anyone looking for and inclusive piece of literature that covers history that is generally not taught in history courses.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2023This book is very strange. It shows how people use dramatic tactics to change society, often not for the greater good at all, weaponized, sad, but effective. The drama clubs of the world sat down and maliciously calculated how to incite others and provoke them into foolishness to sway public perception and accomplish soulless ends, and this is what they came up with. Heavily inspired by Freire without any knowledge of the divine. Dangerous to the soul, but a solid approach toward temporary earthly political gain
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2014A treasure trove of simple techniques activists can use to change the world. Succinct analysis of many, mostly highly successful, political actions; whether they were successful, how they worked or didn't, and why. It's a book that says, Yes! Try this at home. Try this with your friends, your community or college organization. Change the world, what are you waiting for.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021This is a must read for anybody who wants to train themselves to spot underhanded, manipulative political tactics. It's basically an encyclopedia of deceptive activist tactics that have been employed in the past and continue to be used today to coerce an unwitting populace into uncritically accepting political ideals that they otherwise might reject if presented honestly. It's a very interesting read, but the book gets 3 stars from me because I think that it's immoral. If anything, this should be used exclusively to innoculate yourself against propaganda.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2018Excellent resource with great ideas and examples.

g.v. wilkes ivReviewed in Canada on November 20, 20205.0 out of 5 stars This is a good book. But is it a *great* book?
Book is a catalogue of activist tactics, principles, theories, and case-studies, organized into 2-3 page bursts consistent with Christopher Alexander's notion of a design language. It is as thorough in level of detail as it is broad in scope, an effective companion to e.g. Sharp's From Dictatorship to Democracy.
