Scholarly take on early China with a strong emphasis on archaeological data. While I appreciate the author’s detailed analysis, ultimately I found it a bit too dry for casual reading and would probably enjoy a more narrative analysis.

A Book Written by an Expert to Inspire Non-Experts

This is an excellent general introduction to the period of Chinese history known as "Early China," which begins about 5000 BCE during the Neolithic age and ends with the fall of the Han dynasty in 221 CE. It is very well written and assumes no expertise on the part of the reader. I originally read it back in January, then lent to my ex-husband. He must have thought it was a gift because he never gave it back; so I'm buying it again.

If you are interested in ancient civilizations, archeology, or Chinese history, this book will not disappoint you.

As an aspiring Sinologist, I have read quite a few books on Chinese civilization, although this is the first I have read about the early period, and I like this one a lot. I find the writing very accessible, I would bet even for those who don't study China. I like the author's style because it is logical. This book is probably a great beginning point for studying the early period of Chinese history.

Li Feng has produced a well written summary of a complex early historic period. It provides a deep understanding without being too heavily involved with archaeological diggings, or the macinations of individual kings and their families. Lucidly written. A pleasure to read, and illuminating lay detailed.
