Stanley Tucci stars as a man who surprises his former mistress (Alice Eve, STAR TREK INTO DARKESS), claiming to have left his wife. Before too long, a dark history between the two has come into focus. From Neil LaBute.
I knew before watching 'Some Velvet Morning' that it would be a good film because Stanley Tucci stars. He never disappoints. What I didn't expect was a GREAT film. Wow. Really. I think my jaw is still on the floor somewhere. I couldn't have been caught more off-guard. I must admit however, I became thoroughly disgusted toward the end when I bore witness to Tucci's assault on Eve. I was silently praying for her to murder him. As those of us who viewed the film in its entirety know, the joke was on me. If you are an Indie film buff, or find yourself intrigued by the one-set/2 character films.....WATCH THIS!!! Why 4 and not 5 stars? For one, we are unable to give 4.5 ratings -- which I believe this movie warrants. And.....I reserve 5 stars for my top ten favorites of all time. I still believe that this is one unforgettable creation...thank you for that!!
THEN WHY GIVE IT 3-STARS? I HAD DISAPPOINTMENTS AND ISSUES AT THE END. IT'S LIKE HAVING FILE' MIGNON AND EATING IT LIKE A PORK CHOP WITH YOUR HANDS. WE KNEW HOW SHE EARNED HER MONEY TO AFFORD THAT TOTALLY, TOTALLY FABULOUS APARTMENT BUT I WONDERED WHOLLY WHY HE WAS AN ATTORNEY AND NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE BAR ASSOCIATION IN ALL THAT HE DID AND THREATENED TO DO.
*THE PERFORMANCES WERE OFF THE CHART. ...BRAVO, BRAVO!!!!
YOU HAVE TO BE REALLY GOOD AT YOUR CRAFT TO PULL OFF A SCRIPT LIKE THIS IN CLASS-A CONDITION. *WHAT I WANTED AND STILL MAY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE FOR YOUNG WOMEN IN THEIR LATE TEENS AND 20, AND 30S. SOMETIMES MOTHERS DON'T KNOW AND DON'T TEACH THEIR DAUGHTERS WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEBODY YOU KNOW: RELATIVE OR FRIEND, SHOWS UP AT YOUR DOOR UNANNOUNCED AND YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THEM IN FOUR YEARS. AND, MOST OF ALL, YOU DON'T WANT THEM THERE. YOU HAVE TO TURN THEM AROUND AT THE DOOR OR NEVER LET THEM CROSS THE THRESHOLD. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES. YOU CAN EXPECT THE SAME BEHAVIOR FROM YOUR MOTHER WHO HAS LOST HER WAY IN LIFE AND IN HER MIND. I KNOW OF A FRIEND WHOSE MOTHER TRIED TO TAKE OVER HER LIFE AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE WOULD DO. JUST SHOW UP AT HER DAUGHTERS DOOR PACKING SOME OF HER WORLDLY GOODS. HER MOTHER WAS LIKE IN HER LATE 50S AND HER DAUGHTER WAS LIKE 24 YEARS YOUNGER. IN THE END, AFTER 17 YEARS OF THIS KIND OF INTERRUPTION IT DIDN'T END NICE FOR THE MOTHER. (SEE, GUNS WERE INVOLVED. VERY BIZARRE STORY. OH NO, THE WOMEN DIDN'T HAVE THE GUNS; THE POLICE HAD THE GUNS WHEN THEY CAME OUT.)
BUT MOREOVER..... THESE DYNAMICS SHOULD BE LEARNED BY YOUNG WOMEN BECAUSE FOR THE MOST PART YOU LET SUCH A GUY ACROSS YOUR THRESHOLD YOU ARE BOUND TO HAVE SERIOUS PROBLEMS. BOUND TO. AND YOU SHOULD NOT LET IT HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU PUT YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CHILDREN'S LIFE AT DANGER. [THAT'S HOW EXACTING THESE PERFORMANCES WERE. I MEAN IT WAS RIGHT-ON AND HOLDS YOU TO THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN AND WHEN HE'S GOING TO STRIKE....OR HER. EVERYTHING SHE DID WAS FOOLISH TO ME AND DUMB FOR A FEMALE TO DO. I ENDED UP GIVING UP ON HER AND KNEW SOMETHING BAD HAD TO COME. BUT THEN...THE MOVIE ENDED. AND I FELT CHEATED IN AN ODD SORT OF WAY. [THE MOVIE IS A GOOD TOOL FOR WHAT NOT TO DO.]
I decided to enjoy this, but I might easily have gone the other way, so I think a medium grade is a fair guide to others. This smells an awful lot like an actor's class session. Someone rings the bell, someone responds, they are in an awkward situation, and we learn a little more every second about the relationship between them because that is how fast they can improvise it. I don't really believe they would have risked a whole movie on that, there must be a backstory script somewhere for them to refer to, but it really does have that actors improvising feel. Which completely explains the reviews you're seeing. Five stars for the skilled efforts of the very attractive performers, who know how to hold your eye every second. One star for the absence of a real script, for feeling you are just being endlessly strung along. It's really going to be a matter of taste, give it ten or fifteen minutes and you will know if it is for you.
Not sure why I decided to watch this film ( what with the 2 star average rating ) but certainly glad I did. I've always admired Stanley Tucci even when I hated his character. Alice Eve is so so good here as well. I'm sure this movie is not for everyone, but for me, I really enjoyed watching these two fine actors practice their craft. When you watch it I have a tip.... stick with it 'til the end. Yes it get's hard to watch in places, but hang in there for the end.
I recently watched both Cold Comes the Night with Alice Eve and since I'm both a fan of hers and Neil Labute's I watched this one, too. Cold Comes the Night is the better movie. But both movies prove Alice Eve can do a lot more than terrific romantic comedies like She's Out of My League. Beats me why Hollywood isn't giving Eve more leading roles. As far as this movie goes, it's two characters in a house, that's it, and it's not Sleuth, that's for sure. Somebody said there was a twist, and since eventually I got tired of the dialogue, I fast forwarded to the last 9 minutes, and thought, this isn't a twist, but then it finally happened. Didn't think the twist was worth 7 bucks. I haven't seen everything LaBute has done, but I think In the Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors, and The Shape of Things are his three best movies. Hopefully Dirty Weekend, his provocatively titled next movie with Alice Eve, more actually happens in the movie. That movie seems to have four main characters.
