Blue Collar Conservatives: Recommitting to an America That Works Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 73 ratings

Before Donald Trump successfully mobilized millions of blue collar Americans with his campaign to reclaim America, Rick Santorum was trying to convince his fellow Republicans that it was time to return to the party’s original values: the values of “blue collar conservatives.”

In this powerful book that helped inspire President-Elect Trump’s winning message to voters, Santorum calls out Republican establishment leaders for pandering to business owners at the expense of everyone else. Republicans need to regain the trust of the hard-working members of every family, church, and community across America whose most immediate problems are lack of jobs and opportunity. No more pandering. No more ignoring those left behind by globalization. No more broken promises to the frustrated middle class.

We're entering a brand new era of conservative politics—and Rick Santorum's
Blue Collar Conservatives shows us the way forward.

About the Author

Rick Santorum, a native of Pennsylvania, was a candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2012 and became known as a voice for conservatives who didn't feel they were being represented. In June 2012 he launched Patriot Voices, a grassroots and online community of Americans committed to promoting faith, family, freedom, and opportunity. Prior to running for president, Santorum served in the House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995, and in the Senate from 1995 to 2007, where he was known as one of the most successful government reformers in our history. An accomplished author, Santorum penned the 2005 New York Times bestseller It Takes a Family.

I really enjoyed the book. I read it easily and quickly. It was informative, thoughtful and refreshing. I really feel like he hit the nail on the head. We need to rebrand our party and our message to fit the problems of the present time, not twenty years ago. I appreciate the idea of unity for a cause, reclaiming marriage as a foundation for culture, looking for good, creating jobs, improving education, common sense approach to many of the problems of our day. This includes changing the tax code, which I believe the majority of people have been complaining about for decades, encouraging energy independence and manufacturing, good paying jobs for regular people. I think it is a great message and highly recommend the book to anyone who cares about the direction of our country.

Just finished reading Mein Kampf by Hitler. So when I started into this book I was looking for some real meat. That's what I got.

In '12 I got behind Newt Gingrich. Thought we needed a "big ideas" guy. Clean out the Judges, that kind of thing. That didn't pan out.

Hitler really drives home the fact that we need to forget about the economy. We are the economy. Where there is a broken economy, there are a broken people. Once we get our house in order, the economy takes off. So the 'chicken' comes before the egg. Hitler also raged about objectivism. Put socialism on the ballot or even communism, and people will give it 50/50 consideration. And so it is with our current democrat leadership. They claim to be half of our two party system by rote. they don't deserve it. Preoccupying people with the complete hoax of "Global Warming" and even "Bullying." Watch the shiny keys while they tear down your house, sell your property and enslave your family. And the people vote for it over and over overwhelmingly.

Yes current (and past) government programs instilled by the Democrats are absolutely harmful to faith, family and freedom. Why? Are they idiots? Are they... well intended? Nonsense! They don't care about us. It is exactly the opposite of what the average American might think. The Republicans aren't trying to "sell" anything but the truth. Rick Santorum knows that truth.

Conservativism is the endorsement of reality. We are the ones that want all people to prosper. We are the answer to Americas ills and always have been. This country is off track and everyone knows it.

Rick Santorum knows that the government needs to get behind the people. Rick Santorum knows that we have freedom 'of' religion not freedom "from" religion as is the current misguided cultural notion.

Hitler stressed the importance of land. Something we take for granted. Look at all those small European countries. Do you think they might like to have the United States to spread there wings a little. Maybe become a world superpower? Do you think the northern portion of our country may be lost to Canada? The Southern portion to Mexico? The west to China and the East to England?

Scared yet? You should be. We are on course to lose this. All of it. For the sole reason that we turned away from God and let our childish HATE for religious conservatives lead us to our own self destruction. We will be the disgrace of the world. And when we go down where will that leave Radical Islam on the world stage? Are you awake yet? How about this for a headline on Al-Jazeera: United States Falls Because Its People Got Lost. Or: Christianity Is Dead.

We need someone with solid principles to lead us out of this. Right now we are on autopilot as a nation with no leadership. That can't last much longer.

Good book. I pray that someone, everyone will read it.

Hitlers downfall was the "objectivity" he employed when he looked down on all of us humans and took it upon himself to judge all races. Swell guy. He thought it was important to unite his people and keep them focused like a laser beam against "one common enemy." Who? The Jew (and Gays and Blacks and the Handicapped and the Infirm...).

Let's be clear. Our enemy is Satan. "I'm one of those evil CHRISTIANS Satan warned you about" read a T-shirt I saw on a young boy standing in a Target store one day. Isn't it the truth. Our people are so confused and the Democrats do nothing but exploit it for political gain. Like the Gay Rights movement they are bound and determined to convince all Americans that Christians (or anyone who espouses the absolute undeniable 'natural laws' of truth)are filled with hate. What could be further from the truth. The Democrats even have the audacity to paint us (Christians)as "extremists." You know... like Bin Laden. America's youth just lap it up objectively. Out of convenience of course. America's youth lose their dignity fairly early on in life nowadays and they know they can count on the Democrats to support them in their weaknesses.

Rick discusses the right to "pursue happiness." And he points out that happiness means to pursue good things. Sound radical? It is Satan who endorses vulgarity, sin (self destruction), hate, confusion, and weakness. The current Democratic party Platform is a national disgrace; don't worry we'll get you that abortion, and we will continue to do all we can to bash those waskally wepubwicans!

This book is about restoring the American Dream. Our kids don't even know what that is. They don't know the Democrat's stole it from them. These people are despicable. Why are young males going on shooting rampages? Is it a lack of gun control? Really? Has anyone ever considered that these kids are living in an amoral world where it is dog eat dog? Only the strong survive where there is a lack of... morality! the NRA didn't do that!

Rick Santorum knows the critical differences that translate into LEADERSHIP.

I'm satisfied with the book. I want bold leadership but there is no way America's youth will be able to process that. Rick is a diplomat that can tactfully deliver the message with passion.

First, some disclosures. Rick Santorum is a friend whose storied career I have closely followed -- and strongly supported -- since his election to the Senate in 1994. As a former Secretary of the Senate, I signed his paycheck and had the opportunity to watch work with him up close. Second, my wife is a state chair in his "Patriot Voices" organization.

Frankly, this book is not written for people like me, a longtime "policy wonk" who worked on Capitol Hill for nearly 16 years, including a stint as the top staff member of the Senate Republican Policy Committee. It is written for people who are interested but not "employed" or immersed in the world of politics and policy; people searching for leader who lays out a clear vision of a genuinely "compassionate conservative" agenda that connects with regular people - the working families who pull the wagon of our society and wants leaders who understand the world they live in and wants a government that works for them, not Wall Street or special interests with well-heeled Washington lobbyists.

I read this book on a plane flight back from Lisbon with time to watch a movie - you can read this easily in 4-5 hours. It is not overly detailed and certainly not wonkish (at least from my perspective), but is very well written and heavily footnoted for those looking for substantiation on what the good Senator and 2012 GOP Presidential runner-up proposes. I love the composite family he uses, "the Harrisons," to demonstrate how he not only understands their hopes and fears, but how his prescriptions -- most of which he discussed during the 2012 campaign -- get to the core concerns and issues facing working families. It certainly reads like a treatise for a future presidential campaign. The last chapter especially reads like a potential introduction or summary to the kind of Republican Party Platform for the 2016 election. This book would be an outstanding "text book" or read for a high school AP government class or a variety of college classes.

My only disappointment was that when I hit the acknowledgements, I extolled, "that's it?" I wanted more, and no doubt the Senator could have written a few more chapters on such things as reorganizing the government, tax reform (he touches on it but very briefly), and foreign policy. Those expecting sanctimonious tirades on social issues -- what he is often, repeatedly and wrongly caricatured for -- will be disappointed. And I'm glad for it.

This books clearly reflects the Rick Santorum that I know -- a genuinely humble, spiritual, intelligent, passionate and principled man who is at peace with himself and devoted to his family and his country. If this doesn't sound the Rick Santorum you've been reading or hearing about from the mainstream media, then this book will be an eye opener for you. I highly recommend it.
