The 2TB Seagate Expansion Portable USB 3.0 hard drive is excellent expansion storage choice in an attractive package. This basic drive has a lot in common with other USB 3.0 compact drives including a similar price. This is the current model of the older and well received Seagate Expansion STBX2000401 still available on Amazon.

I have used a number of Seagate and Western Digital external USB 3.0 hard drives. Over time the newer drives tends to operate a bit faster than my older ones. That is my sense with this Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 drive when used with USB 3.0.

This drive has been used in a Windows environment and it plays very nice. Some older Seagate drives did NOT play nice on Linux systems unless the drive's sleep mode was disabled with the Seagate tools. If you plan to use the drive on Linux you may need to change the settings using Seagate tools on a Windows computer before use on Linux or sleep mode might cause loss of access until it is re-plugged.

In my casual testing (copying a 9GB folder of updates, iso files, and many mixed large and small files) performance is on a par with other recent Seagate and WD drives I have for my own business and for clients. At this point I think the USB 3.0 external drive market is pretty much a commodity space.

I've had this 2tb hard drive for about 2/3 months and so far I'm very happy with it. I got it just for my Xbox one, so it doesn't move around at all. Plus it was an easy set up. One thing to note, a 2tb ends up being like a 1.8 but that's with any hard drive. If You need something that HAS to be 2tb then maybe upgrade to a 3 or 4 tb (the more the merrier).

So far so good. I am always skeptical with hard drives though. With USB 3.0 I was able to hit 122-MB/s max transfer speeds with an average of 70-MB/s. The device does get warm as expected. I opt for keeping it on it's side with support (so it doesn't fall) as to provide the most surface-to-air ratio. I have had a pretty good run with a lot of Seagate drives, but in generally they have a high, but random fail rate.

I highly recommend your read BlackBlaze's article "What Hard Drive Should I Buy?" They take data from a server farm and construct a graph to show fail rates. Generally speaking Seagate hard drive have a high failure rate, but at random intervals. Where as Western Digital's will normally fail within the first few months, but once the weak ones are dead the rest do pretty okay.

I'd rather go with a WD if given the same price, but consider this is being used as a backup for another backup, I am looking more at price. Hopefully I'll get lucky, but I know fully well that any hard drive can fail at any time and it's my job to always protect myself. Please take that advice.

* This may be un-related to the drive, but at around 75% full (mid way threw copying over a TB of files) my copying software would randomly freeze or report an error. This happened multiple times, but didn't happen when I coppied my first TB (0% - 50% full). Thought I'd throw that in for good measure. I will be keeping an eye on this one.

While many reviews suggest these can be opened then swapped in a PS4, mine has different internal hardware. It looks like Seagate removed the SATA connector in their manufacturing process so it won't work as a PS4 drive replacement.

Mine had a DOM (date of manufacture) of 11/2015 labeled on the retail box and the drive itself. Neutral three star rating since I'm not using this as intended. Just wanted to save a fellow ps4 owner the hassle.

It has been by far the easiest plug and play device I have used. I am using specially for my Xbox One. Xbox One recognized it right away and I had no issues whatsoever. It moved data over quickly from the internal harddrive of my XB1 to the external drive a lot quicker than expected. The only things I can complain about is that the LED light is way too bright when in operation and I have to turn the unit around when in use. Also, judging by the picture, it looks as if the outside coating would have been rubberized, but it is not. It is slick plastic.

I love it, I use it on my Macbook to save my documents and as a time machine to save everything on my computer. Now to make it clear, this hard drive is set up to work with Window PCs out of the box, not Macs or Macbooks. But there is a way to make it work. You need to download something from Seagate. Search on your computer Seagate download for macs or something and it will show up; it is something called Seagate Dashboard. Once you have that on your computer, the hard drive will start working on your Mac.

I am putting this in because I have noticed a lot of questions about whether or not this works for the Macs; it does, it just won't do it out of the box.
