House of Royals is not just a book about vampires. Keary Taylor describes a world of politics and how vampires are caught up in this world. Vampires can be born vampires or bitten vampires and of course both represent two different classes of people. Keary takes this a step further and explores a world of born vampires who are of royal blood and how their houses control the towns around them. The book is well written and her characters are developed leaving the reader loving some while hating others because of their pure evilness.
The main character, Alivia Ryan, is thrown into a world she knows nothing about after the passing of a father she never knew. She moves to a town she knows nothing about and notices the fear in the townspeople whenever they see her. She is warned not to be out after dark but thinks this is only a protective warning. She quickly learns that the town has a vampire problem and the townspeople tend to steer clear of the vampires whenever possible. Once news travels that Alivia is in town, Rath, her father's best friend and administrator of the estate sends Alivia to stay with Ian who has taken it upon himself to rid the town of vampires. Jasmine, the self proclaimed leader of the house contacts Alivia and lets it be known that she alone has been responsible for the house for fifteen years and will continue to be responsible. Alivia's father never wanted her to be burdened with the politics of the house but with the pressure from Jasmine and the feelings Alivia has towards Ian forces her to make a decision. She can only hope she makes the right one.

Not too bad, but also nothing really special, so, just eh.
I don't feel any chemistry with the main leads, and I felt like their relationship moved way too fast. All they did was train and then all of a sudden they would talk about their deep feelings for each other. Or like when the heroine, like halfway through the books, says she's done being afraid, and I'm just like, when was she EVER afraid?? She seemed fine with everything and was taking everything pretty well, and NEVER seemed scared or even told or showed the reader she was scared. It's just so much telling and no showing, and I have literally no clue what anyone's feelings are until they tell someone, so zero emotional impact.
I was also bored almost the entire book, so much so that I started to skim without realizing what I was doing. Despite the book being overall decently written, any and all events were pretty bland and I just didn't care for any of it. I will be continuing on to see if it gets any better, but not at all impressed yet.

This is a Review for the audio version of House of Royals by Keary Taylor
4 Stars
I picked this audiobook after it popped a few times in my Facebook newsfeed. I wasn’t really in the mood for vampires, but something about the blurb struck a chord with me and so I took the plunge.
The first thing I have to say is that I’ll ignore the fact that I listened to the audio book and instead I’ll concentrate on the story and Ms. Taylor’s great world building. Otherwise I would have given this book 3 stars.
I don’t know if you have audio book samples through Audible, if you do, I encourage you to listen to the people narrating the books before you buy copies. I wish I could have done so before buying the audiobook for House of Royals. That said... let's get on with the review.
House of Royals is the story of Alivia Ryan. After a man who claims to be her father dies, she inherits Conrath Plantation. The plantation is in a town called Silent Bend, Mississippi. The town has its history and skeletons, and the locals know not to go out after dark and the police never looks into crimes involving blood.
Once she arrives at Silent Bend, a man called Ian Ward tries to kill her, but later, after getting to know her, he insists that she most learn to defend herself so he trains her. Why should she learn to defend herself? Because the House might try to manipulate her for their own political reasons and she could be hurt in the process.
I really liked Ms. Taylor world building. A powerful vampire called Jasmin is in charge of the House; however, it should be Liv, since her father was at one point the man in charge. Liv is after all a born vampire Princess. However, she’s reluctant to get involved.
Part of the world building is the different kinds of vampires, born versus bitten. These were a welcomed addition in a genre where it seems that we go for only bitten vampires or born and hardly mix the two. I liked that there were clear differences between both species, and that those differences were never in conflict during the story.
The relationship between Liv and Ian progressed slowly. It felt as if the characters were taking their time and trying to assess their feelings before actually jumping in the whole can’t live without you plot, that so many books seem to have nowadays. I quite liked that Liv doesn’t label Ian as her boyfriend straight away, and instead wonders what to call him.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series, which are out now, especially after that cliffhanger.

a good read but frustratingly brief at times
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 24, 2015Verified Purchase
This book is a typical blend of vampires, politics and romance with a strong female lead, reminiscent of the vampire diaries and the sookie Stackhouse series. Its distinctive features are the fact that the main character, Alivia, is 22 so the book doesn't quite fall into the young adult category but neither is it quite a fully adult book (no swearing, no explicit scenes, violence not too graphic). Secondly what stands out is the fact that the vampires are proper vampires, ie they are frequently seen drinking blood and are very much predators and not just sparkling manipulative beauty queens.
The plot involves a young woman whose life is uprooted when she finds out her father was actually a rich southern man who left her a mansion in Mississippi. Upon arrival at her new home she discovers her father was in fact a powerful vampire and that she will become a vampire too when she dies. To make matters worse a local faction of vampires need her to lead their 'house' since she is a member of their royal family.
Naturally, she is bold and independent, and naturally, despite being perfect for the leadership role, she wants none of it.
What follows is her struggles with the house leader and her destiny as well as a developing romance with the classic star crossed lovers element as the guy happens to be a vampire hunter who hates all vampires.
The book drew me in from the start with some vivid descriptions and settings and was enjoyable and fast paced. However it was quite a light read in the sense that there wasn't too much emotional depth. In fact the way the main character just accepted all these massive revelations and life changes so quickly was a bit annoying and I would have liked if the writing had gone deeper to explore her thoughts more. Also the romance was a touch predictable and the twist at the end was seen from a mile off.
At the end I was left wanting more, partly because the book was an easy enjoyable read about vampires which I love, but also partly because ao much detail was missing from the first book. It felt a bit rushed and would have benefitted from being longer, I think, because at the end I felt that I only barely cared what happened to alivia as a result of how she had been written. The story deals with deep topics but on a shallow level, possibly because of its slightly awkwardly aged protagonist which makes it neither young adult nor full adult in tone, but I hope the second book takes more time over the characters' development.

Someone recommended House of Royals to me
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2016Verified Purchase
Someone recommended House of Royals to me, knowing I have a love for anything vampires and it’s safe to say this book did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the unique take on vampirism and the way that Keary carefully builds the story based on the history of the vampires and the town.
I love Alivia’s strong female character and how doesn’t allow the target on her back to stop her from living her life or getting the man she wants. She doesn’t allow the house to manipulate her, she knows what she wants and she goes for it. No matter the danger.
For me I think my favourite part of the book has to be the ending it was so tense and full of suspense, there is a great cliffhanger which I’m sure has left many with a book hangover. It made me super excited to start the next book, eager to know what happened.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and have given it a five-star rating. I have also already begun recommending it to other people. This book is full of politics and vampire hierarchy and takes you on a great journey of a new vampire world. If you enjoy young adult and vampire then this book is definitely for you.

First person present tense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2016Verified Purchase
I have to admit that I didn't get very far in this book. I really was intregued by the premise and wanted to give it a go BUT the book is written in first person present tense. I really struggle with first person past tense (I.e. I looked into his eyes) but if the writing is strong enough I can eventually forget my gripe and get into the story. However first person present tense ( I.e. I look into his eyes) makes me feel like I am reading a dream sequence and I am constantly agitated wanting it to end and get back to the actual story. It's a real shame for me, as the author is actually very competent, offering good descriptions and well thought out interactions. It would have been a pleasure to carry on with this book in third person past tense ( I.e. She looked into his eyes) but unfortunately it's just not for me. Download the sample and give that a go, and if you don't mind the tense, I recon most vampire/paranormal fans will have a good read.

I received an arc of this book from Keary Taylor in return for an honest review.
It's Not your typical vampire Romance. It's better. I don't want to give away any spoilers but Alivia is a pretty laid back girl thrown into a world she never knew exists and does it with class. I found it a little slow to begin with but once you get into it you get hooked. And the last few chapters go really quickly. Some parts really had me on edge trying to read quicker to get to the part I wanted to hear about. I was completely enthralled. When it ended I really wanted the 2nd one straight away. I want to hear more about the royals and would have liked to see one in this book however I know it's all to come in the next one. And that I will defiantly be reading. Totally worth the read. 😄
