Are all those five star critics honestly okay with that infantile language and constant repetition of phrases? There is a fine line between getting creative with vocabulary and childish name-calling and word-mangling, and the author has clearly crossed it. By miles.
I liked the idea of the plot, hence still two stars. The execution however totally put me off.
I didn't like the main character one bit. She does not show any care for others, is looking down her nose at the world around her and radiates disgust at having to help others. She keeps telling everyone she is a selfish bitch which she seems to be proud of, rather than it coming across as regretful insight.
Her calling people and places names sounded like a five year old on the playground chanting cuss words she hopes may irritate adults. 'WTF' is overused, and while some phrases are funny the first time around, they get lame pretty fast when being repeated over and over again.
Any sex scenes fell flat for me with naming private parts Johnson or Woowoo.
Distinction of all other characters were made by looks/ appearances and no time was spent on highlighting their personality.
To me it felt like the author was racing through the story and couldn't wait to get to the end. What could have been a suspenseful story with sparks flying between the witch and werewolf just annoyed the heck out of me. I guess there's one thing I agreed with the author - I couldn't wait for the end to come.

Author's Note About Previous Version
This following is a note about story changes and updates for those readers who read the original version of this story in the 12 Shades of Midnight anthology.
Switching Hour was originally part of the 12 Shades of Midnight anthology which was available for a limited time in 2015. The original story I wrote has since been adapted as necessary for inclusion in the Magic and Mahem series. This copy--the one containing this note--is a highly revised and extended version. You as a reader will notice many changes from the original, which was intentionally crafted to fit anthology guidelines.
The most noticeable of changes is in characters. In the anthology version, Chapter 1 was originally co-written with my good buddy, Dakota Cassidy, as part of a fun and fabu experiment. In the anthology, Switching Hour (by me) and Witched at Birth (by Dakota) include the same, or nearly the same, beginning. At the end of that original Chapter One our characters went separate ways--an intentional creative decision we made together--and our stories went their separate ways too. After the anthology was removed from publication, Dakota and I both released our stories on their own. We each made as many changes as we felt necessary to make them work in their new individual series. The biggest change I made was in creating a brand new best friend character for my heroine, Zelda. The new character has a different name (Sassy), a different storyline, and will return in later series books because that is what best friends do.
If you are a Dakota fan, as well as one of mine, you may notice our Chapter One remains similar even in our newly released versions. Now you know why, Pookies. Enjoy!
~ Robyn

How many ways was this book atrocious? It is poorly written, juvenile, silly, tasteless, and crass. On top of that it has a crazy senseless plot punctuated with coarse language that serves no purpose. Is it original? Yes, but that's about the only good thing anyone could say about it -- but then any mishmash of terrible ideas thrown together would also be original.but still not worth a spit It was was an original idea run so amok that I could not force myself to finish it. I felt great satisfaction in snapping it off and, as I deleted it from my Kindle, knowing I would never see a word of it again. Why people have praised it and it has become a best seller is beyond me. I've read hundreds upon hundreds of books across many genres in my lifetime and try to have an open mind for all, and seldom if ever have I found one this lacking of any redeeming qualities. In a word, it is asinine. Don't waste your time on it.

Robyn has an interesting style and you can definitely see the character's personality. Unfortunately, there was very little substance, it was annoyingly vulgar, repetitive, and it just ending up falling flat. There was so much story that could have been brought out. The characters were all very undeveloped and I had a hard time caring about any of them. Including the insufferable main character. I was seriously confused by all of the 5 star ratings. The filler at the end was very annoying. That should not be included in the page count. It is a shame.

Not for me.
The idea sounded cute for a light paranormal read, but I didn’t care for the execution. I’m not a prude (swear when I stub my toe, and read books with sex scenes…) but I don’t appreciate those that feel that profanity is part of every conversation. I don’t surround myself with people that talk like that and I don’t care to read books that force it in, my eyes feel like they pop when the words are just there without any strong reason for them. Another thing that didn’t appeal to me was the raunchiness factor. The amount of times the lead character refers to animals licking themselves and neutering them for it, everything was crass, crotch and couch confusion. And the language used, trying to fit into an age group? Example “redonkulous”. It felt forced. I finished the book because I generally do 99% of the time. It was light and not too complicated to figure out the ending.
[Spoiler alert]
I would have liked to known what happened to her friend from chapter 1 and her task. I didn’t read the included preview to book 2 so maybe it was in there.
It was free, had I paid for it, I would have been really upset at how much filler there was at the end, promoting the next book in the series. Always use the “look inside” tool from amazon before you spend money! Your mileage may vary.

First: the constant crouch mixed up with crotch annoyed me. Did the author even have someone read it and edit before publishing?
Second: the constant Baba Yaga old lady jokes. Just no. Don't joke about old ladies smelling bad in a romance.
Third: I love a good redemption story. Talking cat familar? Love it. Werewolves and witches romance? Sign me up.
This was none of those things.
No changing to be a better person. I felt like the "mission" was useless if she didn't actually learn from being a horribly selfish person.
The heroine treats her familiar without any relief he's alive or kindness. No connection there at all.
The romance was dusty. Who calls it a JOHNSON? The sex scenes read...weird not sexy. And the constant swearing, sure I cuss plenty, but you drop f-bombs every other paragraph and can't type out something sexier or dirtier than johnson? Nope. That's a mood killer.
Lastly: the usual - show don't tell, clean up exposition, add depth to plot points, and seriously...preview of the next book shouldn't count towards page count.
Glad I got the book for free. I'd be asking for my money back if I had paid for it.

First off if "language" in a book offends then move on right by this one. Our heroine, Zelda, has what might be termed a potty mouth and unleashes it frequently. So, if this is a problem for you then steer clear. Personally, it really doesn't bother me (I could go in to a long diatribe about it all but I promise to refrain) and, in actual fact, the author does manage to squeeze some rather creative sweariness in there - just needed a couple of portmanteaued cusses and it would have reached the zenith of foul mouthed fun.
There's the thing it is FUN, from start to finish there is a lot of humour in this short tale. Yes a lot of it is a little broad and has a tendency to club your over the head rather than tap you on the shoulder but it's all good. Subtle this book isn't but then, Zelda isn't exactly a proponent of subtle herself. The thing that did annoy me was the constant and ever changing nicknames Zelda gave to Baba Yaga, the first couple of times it was blah by the end of the book I was ready to either strangle the character or punch her full in the face every time it happened.
There are also a surprising number of, ahem, erotic encounters, in the book. Now, these are what usually puts me off a book - constant cursing no problemo, getting down and dirty makes me cringe. Fortunately for this reader although there is a fair bit of horizontal action it is not graphic details more of an overview of the shared character experience and it did seem to actually make sense within the context of the story and not just pushed in to titillate.
The plot whizzes by, barely giving the reader time to draw breath. In summary - Zelda is released from magical pokey after running over her familiar, the Witches Council (headed by Baba Yaga) give until Halloween to complete their challenge or she will lose her powers. Finding out she had an Aunt Hildy who died, violently, and left Zelda her house she sets off to claim her inheritance and hopefully keep her powers. Things start to really get strange when she arrives at an almost ghost town with rotting vegetables in the local grocery and strange cages in her Aunt Hildy's basement. Throw in a reanimated familiar (still has 6 lives left) with a nice line in credit card fraud, some decidedly un-Snow White wild animals who camp out on Zelda's porch and mix with a healthy dose of pop culture and you more or less have Switching Hour.
Rude, obnoxious, self-absorbed and very funny; this book is the personality of it's heroine through and through. Almost despite myself I found myself really enjoying the read and I am now toying with getting the next in the series.

This book opens with two witches - one of whom is our central character - in a magical prison. Our heroine, Zelda, is materialistic, selfish, slightly unhinged and has both mommy issues and the absolute worst potty mouth I've ever read in a book. If that's a problem for you, then I recommend you look elsewhere. However if you don't mind the language this is a great read, which I keep going back to instead of reading new stuff (and that's a marker of how much I enjoy it), and the sequel, "Witch Glitch', is even more of a treat. Robyn's writing is solid, though I'd like to see more character development for some of the secondary characters - perhaps this will come with the later books in the Magic & Mayhem universe, which I'm not currently in a position to read - and her story development is sound. Basic plot is as follows: Zelda is freed from prison and sent to the little town in West Virginia where her aunt lived, with instructions to find out how her aunt died by Hallowe'en -- or turn into a mortal. She reluctantly accepts, glad to be away from her equally nutty, building-demolishing cellmate Sassy (whom we haven't seen the last of). Turns out she and her aunt have quite a lot in common, including their taste in expensive outfits and some really handy powers. I won't give anything else away; if you can handle the language, you can find out for yourself.
Recommended, but not for younger readers or those of a disposition to object to profanity.

Shifters and Medical Magic

On probation, Witch Zelda and her annoying once-Dead cat Fábio, end up in a strange town full of shifters, where her job is to find out who killed her aunt Hildy. And resist the cuteness of baby racoons and a gorge or wolf shifter Mac.
This book is brilliant- I loved Zelda, how uncouth and contrary she is, whilst trying to deny she has feelings for the group of crazy she’s dyers she has to look after.
Mack her potential mate is incredibly sexy and also annoying.
The primary plot rattles all big nicely whilst the sub-plots open up and we find out interesting tidbits. The erotic elements are just right, but it’s mostly the sense of humour and comedy in this book that I loved.

Fun paranormal romance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 30, 2020Verified Purchase
Switching Hour (Magic and Mayhem Book one) is a paranormal romance.
Zelda is a selfish witch; she often conjures herself top fashion clothing and exotic holidays, but the witch council threw her into jail when she killed her talking cat. After her release she had to pass a task or face being turned into a mortal.
Sent to a remote part of West Virginia, Zelda’s magic is soon needed by injured wildlife. However, not everything is as innocent as it first appears as the animals reveal that they are shifters and that Zelda is to be their Shifter Whisperer.
This was a fun, light, fast-paced tale that uses mockery and humour to drive the story forward. This book reminded me, in parts, of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, because Sabrina had an Aunt Zelda and a talkative cat. I believe this story would suit those looking for a quick read and who enjoy this particular genre.

Narrator: Stephanie Reggio
I really enjoyed this story, right from the off I liked the main character, Zelda is quirky, selfish, sassy and sarcastic but obviously her heart is good (even if she tries to deny it) and when we’re first introduced to her familiar, a cat called Fabio that as it happens she was in magical jail for killing, I couldn’t help but chuckle.
Narrator was perfect, great story full of great characters that I’ve just added this author to my tbr list.
