When I first started reading this book, to be honest, I was not sure what I was getting into. However, the story arc grabbed a hold of me and did not let go till the end. Well, actually, it has not let go 'cause I am ready to pick up the next book and pick up where this one left off.
This is not like most urban paranormal books and I am grateful that it does not follow the trap of quite a few. There were no zombies, or vampires, not even a shape changer. Nor is there the ease of jumping into the realms of hell and back out again either. I love the rules she is following as they seem to follow right along with what is truth for what we know in the realm of possibility. Nothing feels forced like trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole. For me, it feels like it would if this sort of thing did happen. (If that makes sense.)
As to the characters in this story, once again there is no force to them either. They have this feeling about them as if you are a part of their neighborhood. A casual closeness that you would know if something happened to them and would offer to help in any way you could. They are not best friend close but more than acquaintances.
I believe this is one of the reasons I enjoy Ninie's writing so much. You are a part of the story, not just a sideliner. At some point, you become a part of the story and didn't realize it.

This book was good with a couple of exceptions. There was one major character flaw the old black couple. I was agitated by their speech/ grammar. I'm black and my grand parents or great grandparents don't speak like this and while I realize each author creates characters as they seem fit I found it unappealing!! I'm only commenting because this stereotype has become increasingly more common. Normally I just stop reading write a poor review and delete. This time I will just say I found it distasteful and the constant use of the n* word by villains unnecessarily common.

The Knowing is a supernatural thriller that will make the hairs on the back of your neck and salute - if you have ever read Frank Perretti - well this is that on steroids, and starts from the word go. It is about a school shooting that brings on sightings of a demon - yup - a demon - a real life demon. You have a rag tag group fighting the demons - Andi - Daniel - Jack - Theresa. It is an actual battle of good vs. evil - the ultimate battle of time that we face every single moment of every single day. The demon was sent here by a prince of hell for a specific person to take that person out - who was that person - well it was...........nah - I can't tell you that - you have to read the book - and what happened to them - you just will not believe your eyes it is unreal - and the thing about it is it really happens - that is what is scary - but not scary if GOD is your GOD your shelter. What happened to that person? well - you have to find out.......this book is amazing and intense and suspenseful.

I enjoyed this novel enough to buy the second in the series. This is the story of good versus evil on the spiritual realm. Three 12 year-olds are being bullied by a group of 'bad boys' who suddenly take a turn for the worst. It's bad enough that they are bullies, but now they're equipped with super human powers. Of the three 'good' kids, a girl and two boys, only the girl can see what's really going on with the bullies--only she can see that these boys are possessed by demons.
Fast forward a couple of decades and the two boys had moved away, while the girl just disappeared when her father went to prison. A school shooting reunites the two boys--now men, one a preacher, the other a police officer, bringing back memories that had been lost of their childhood, showing them that the school shooter is somehow connected to a summer they can't remember.
This could be a 'Christian' novel, though there are some adult themes sprinkled throughout, and a lot of violence, but the faith of the main characters is strong by the end of the story. It kept me guessing and interested, and was a fairly fast read.

This is a very dark book about the evil nature of some people. I almost didn't read it, but had the author confused with someone else and thought it would be a light-hearted, educational book as it got deeper. By then I was hooked by the horror and needed to know that justice would be served. This is not a book for the faint-hearted as it will leave you with the sickening realization of the evils that are all around us which so frequently go undetected or unsolved.

I purchased this book a while back, but never found time to read it. Since then, I have become a huge fan of Ninie's writing and have read many of her other books. When I found out she is getting ready to release the fourth book in this series, I decided it was time to read The Knowing. As with most of Ninie's books, this one sucked me in from the very start. I fell in love with all the main characters - the good ones! - and I'm so excited to know that I will meet them again in the future as I continue to devour the books in this series.

I have been an avid fan of Ninie Hammond every since I read Five Days in May. I love her plots, her characters and the way their lives interact, and the way she keeps a story moving from page one. I especially love her inclusion of spirituality into each story line and conclusion. However, this new line of demon possession and brutality does nothing for me. It took me forever to finish this book as I was just not drawn to that level of excitement to see how it ended. I used to love Stephen King in his early days until he started going off the deep end. I seldom read him now. I'm sure I will not continue with this trilogy of Ms. Hammonds.

This is a great read and I'll be keeping an eye out for book 2.

This is a different genre of book to a previous novel that I've read by this author and I was interested to see how her writing of paranormal suspense (this book) compared to her thriller Sudan, which I'd enjoyed.
Good vs evil is the predominant theme of this book. The two male lead characters have to search their pasts (part of which seems to have been wiped away) to find information after a school shooting and sightings of a demon.
The paranormal element of the story is well done and I really liked the authors way of describing what was seen and felt when demons appeared. The characters combined to create an interesting mix of personalities where conflicts of interest added a little something extra to the main plot.
The writing is dark and foreboding and had me thinking about spirituality on more than one occasion. If there was an Amazon category of Paranormal psychological thriller, then this book should go in it. This is a great read and I'll be keeping an eye out for book 2.

Must Read

I loved this book so much, I had no expectations as it was free and had never read anything by Nine Hammond; it blew me away. It's the fight between the forces of good and evil storyline but far far more. The start of the book is a mass shooting at a primary school which moves so fast and then it becomes so much more. I am a big Stephen King fan and have recently finished The Stand(the long edition) and I think this book topped it because of the really likeable characters, plot twists and freshness. I have since paid for the second book and it did not disappoint.

Wow. What a brilliant read

This book is a superb, thrilling read that grips you from the first page. If ever there was a page turner this is it. Was a surprise as I have read two other books by Ninie, which I thoroughly enjoyed and can recommend, but were not ' supernatural' thrillers. As a lover of Stephen King , Dean Koontz etc. I put Ninie right up there with those great writers. I read the last page and cried out , NO. I WANT TO READ MORE. Fantastic. Thank you Ninie

Great book had me hooked from the start, it kept me interested to the last page. The characters were well crafted and the twist of the flashbacks too there youth put the present into context. The slow unfolding of the memory of the main characters drove the story on without having the author explain what lead them to there present situation.

Such a way with words ...

Not one Ninie Hammon's strongest stories but what I always enjoy is her way with words. Ninie conjures up images, sounds or smells just with a few of them. They are a delight to read. My most favourite book of hers is 'Five Days in May: A Novel'.
'The Knowing: Book One' was enjoyable and is easily 3* but I just felt Ninie could have done more with the story.
I will always read books by this author as I know I am in for a lexical treat.
