I purchased this software specifically to create images for a book I'm working on. Having never used anything like this before, I wasn't sure if I would be able to create all the pictures that I needed.
Well, after having it for two weeks, I can safely say that it did everything I wanted and then some. I was able to create every image I needed, and now am using it to create all kinds of other pictures. I haven't gotten too deep into the animation features yet, but that will come later.
One word of advice: Poser offers a series of instructional videos on their website, and I strongly recommend that you buy them ($49.99 for over seven hours of instruction). That may seem like a steep price, but it's worth every penny. These videos flatten your learning curve. When I first opened Poser, I had no clue what I was doing. After watching all the videos (and taking careful notes), I had a real grasp on how to use just about every feature. If you're serious about getting the most out of Poser, get these videos.
The main problem I have with this product is that it doesn't really interface with mechanical CAD systems via compatible file formats. There are many mechanical designs, e.g., automotive, that logically may want to incorporate human figures. There is no direct way to do this with this product. It is intended for use with entertainment type graphics software. To use with technical CAD software will require the purchase of expensive file format converter software. The product would be much more generally useful if it output industry standard file formats such as IGES or STEP. Otherwise, it has a very steep learning curve but does include an extensive library of human types.
Poser is a very impressive program, with the help of the tutorials anyone can master it and it's compatible with many computer systems. The rendering capacity to create 3D characters and scenery is impressive, however it's lacking in certain areas of character content as it does not have many options when it comes to designing characters of color or different nationalities. Poser needs to change that and also add more props and scenery options, other than that it's an outstanding program and a very flexible creational tool.

I bought this program because it was described as being a great application for beginner 3D designers. And that it was created to be easy to create characters...
False. For the following reasons: 1. To learn this application a user is expected to study a 1,000+ page manual that is written like a VCR manual. There is a tutorial, however Smith Micro expects users to cough up an additional $49.99 plus tax and shipping, for a service that should be included with the original purchase.
2. No explanation on creating personal skins. Or anything... as they set it up for you to pay more -- that's sneaky in my opinion.
Overall I am disappointed and unfortunately will struggle with figuring this out independently as I am totally against sly sales moves such as this.
