A great book not always received as well as it should be.

With a primary field in psychology and a basic grounding in neurological development, I realized while writing a paper for inclusion in a collection on scientific ethics that I knew little concerning "unintended results" in"germ-line editing of genes". This led me eventually to James D. Watson as a major contributor the the field in the past 50years. He writes clearly, personally, and precisely about this very complex subject.
Other reviews describe various aspects of the book.This one focuses on the end of the book where he describes the response he receives to an article he wrote for a prominent German newspaper titled "The Ethic of the Genome". He argues simply that when genome research informs a pregnant woman that her fetus has Tay-Sachs (TS) disease, an incurable and lethal genetic disorder that will allow her child no more than 4 years of life, the diagnosis is actually offered compassionately so that if she decides to proceed, what is ahead for her is no surprise.
Granting German fear of Hitler's genetic plans for a "master race", it is still surprising how negative his article is received by government officials, physicians, and theologians. Even German scientists are silent, leaving him out on a limb. One theologian describes Watson's paper as an "Ethics of Horror", when all Watson is attempting to say is that love is a product of not just our religious but genetic history. He ends his book with quoting the Apostle Paul on love, adding that a secular Paul (perhaps Watson himself would fit?) would argue that love may be the greatest gift of genes to our humanity. Hostile responses to his paper, among other things, did nothing to reconcile scientific and philosophical and eligious ethics. His response does not reflect Nassim Taleb's comment that different approaches often mount the same mountain by different routes.

DNA for everyone

Watson deserves the Pulitzer Prize for this book. He is one of the best science writers I have read, although we all know he is a biochemist who worked out the double-helix structure of the DNA molecule and won the Nobel Prize. The book is a detailed history of DNA from the 19th century through 2015. He was in the thick of all the developments after he worked out the double helix structure. He makes his writing amusing at times, personal, letting you know how scientists work, and knowing their fallibilities. He knows how the pharmaceutical industry developed to take advantage of his and others' innovations with DNA. And his story shows the competing nature of those companies and how most companies rise and fall again in a short time, leaving only a few to be the winners. I've not yet finished the book, but I expect the last half will be as interesting and informative as the first. He has a knack for describing complex processes in a simple and interesting way, which is why I see him as a super science writer.

I am a science teacher and am using this book to teach a summer genetics class. I haven’t wanted to put it down since I got it a few days ago! It’s written in a story format rather than a textbook format, and James Watson describes the story in such an elegant yet easy to understad way. If you are interested in genetics, this is the book to read!

Watson and his co-authors have rendered a marvelously authoritative and complete account of the dawning of the age of molecular biology and the progress made since Watson and the late Francis Crick announced the structure of DNA 64 years ago. Though one doubts that the stated intention that "someone with zero biological knowledge should be able to understand the book's every word" will be realized.
