Totally thrilling read from start to finish. Yes, it's MM, as in the main character is gay. There is no real sex. Heat level is very low. But that doesn't matter if you really are in need a of a awesome story. I loved it from start to finish. Ink mages are rare creatures indeed. Tattoo artists are trained up, but an Ink Mage is magically connected to the Ink Network. It's a strange and fascinating new world of magic. Instead of just wanting a tattoo and getting one, the tattoo chooses the bearer. The Tattoo Artists pull the tattoo from the body and Ink Network, giving form and function to the magic in the bearers skin. From flighty songbirds to powerful dragons, a tattoo can contain any animal. They are a part of the magic of the Ink Network, and a part of the soul of the bearer.
Enter a thief. One who can steal away the tattoo of the bearer. Something horrific and painful, leaving the victim to die a painful death. Dacian (known as Dan) is an Ink Mage. But he keeps that a secret. Because if he didn't, he would be whisked away and kept prisoner by other Magic people, or the Council. He's got a go bag ready and waiting in room and always has one foot out of the door. The Ink Network calls on him to stop the thief and restore balance. Along with a Werewolf Pack, a Dreamwalker, his ex-lover and Tattoo partner and a host of other colorful cast, Dacian works to find the thief and stop him, no matter what. Even if it means that eventually he'll have to leave, despite the fact that he might, just might, have finally developed some roots in the world.
For anyone who loves to see a gay character who can be a hero. For those who enjoy an amazing magical adventure set in a semi-modern world filled with magical beings. For anyone who simply has a strong love of Fantasy and a great storyline with excellent world building and great editing, this is definitely a book you should not miss. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

This is an urban fantasy in which tattoos are magical and powerful. (If the tattoo is a dragon, that’s really dangerous!) And if you steal a tattoo, you’ve also committed murder.
The protagonist, Dacian, is a gay “ink magician,” and there is a little M/M romance in the book, but that’s not the focus of the story. The focus is the tattoo thefts.
THE PROS:
The premise is pretty original. It was a fresh read.
The world building is great. It’s a dangerous world, parts of it with cool, psychedelic buildings, where humans and “supernals” coexist.
The editing is good and made for a smooth read. Other reviewers complained of the editing, but I did not run into that problem. I suspect I got a later e-version (Jan 2019) that had corrections.
THE CONS:
The plot sagged in the middle. I liked the intriguing beginning and the exciting end, but not so much in between.
I expected a story about shapeshifters and powerful magic to be scarier, but it wasn’t dark, and it wasn’t dread- or tension-filled. It was actually sweet at times, especially when the more pet-like tattoo critters came out to investigate or play.
OVERALL:
I loved the premise. It’s a murder mystery except the murders are supernatural and tattoo-related. Unfortunately, the book didn’t hold my interest, especially in the middle.

Spoilers below:
Another fantasy novel I have mixed feelings for. The powerful magician having to stop the bad guy while fighting against the omnipresent council that seems more intent of hindering than helping seems to be a fairly common trope and to an extent, that's what this is. Dacian (Dan) is said "powerful" magician, but seems far more intent on hiding himself away than increasing his power or learning more of his potential, or finding and stopping the bad guy. He's a VERY reluctant hero and Holly Evans makes you sit through this story while he collects an entourage of magic users and shapeshifters and, almost begrudgingly, learns more about being an ink magician. There is a small romantic thread through the book with Isaiah, a spell weaver, but it doesn't go too much into detail as it's yet another area where Dacian seems to be a reluctant participant. The plot piddles along until someone, other than Dacian, finally formulates a plan and sets it into action in the last few pages of the book. The final fight scene is vague and apparently happening on separate planes of reality which makes it hard to visualize/conceptualize(?), and in the end, Dacian is exposed as an ink magician and has no choice but to flee the country. Fortunately for him, the entourage he spent the book gathering is willing to relocate to Europe with him. As this is a series, I am going to assume that further books will be spent with him reluctantly participating in the plot, as the core of his anxiety hasn't been dismissed or dealt with. He's just fleeing into hiding again. So, HE has made an interesting world full of magic, and thankfully not one fated mate in sight, but her hero is reluctant to the point of not being the hero at all, and that makes me reluctant to move on with the series.

It was ok
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2018Verified Purchase
The book was ok, just seemed a little rough with storylines. There was obviously the main 1 with finding the thief but then there's a couple of confusing characters that seemed more after thoughts to keep the story moving and the characters love interest was just all over the place, with they "I like him but I'm not sure and this guy I'm not sure about either" and then also the main man Dan showing his true colour's...
I was in to minds about buying the next book and looked at the collection, have to say for the price I'd expect a lot more for me money but I have my doubts about the delivery so I'm giving them a miss...
Like I said ok read but doubtful on the rest

Something different
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2018Verified Purchase
I was getting bored of reading the same old fantasy stories, it's refreshing to read something different.
Magicians with different types of magic, tattoo animals that are alive and can become animated and a nice change to have a homosexual MC too.

Found this with KU. I was instantly captured by the the writing. The Ink Born is a new supernatural kind of people and
I was intrigued to enter their world. Dacien has lots of edges and is a character I can see developing more. This first book leaves you wanting more.

Ink Stains Everywhere
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 15, 2018Verified Purchase
This book was very different and took me to another world. The world of ink magicians is a magical kingdom where tattoos are not just body art, but much more. This exceeded my expectations by a mile.
