I liked this movie,

I read a few rotten tomatoes reviews, what the heck did people expect? Casablanca? Citizen Kane? Reviewing it for what it isn't even trying to be is unfair.

This is a young persons and non cynical older persons whimsical monsters and armies movie. there is very little blood and gore for how many teeth the monsters have.

I don't expect the Actors to go all out deep emotion trying for an oscar on this, it would have then sucked if any part had taken itself too seriously. But it achieved a nice balance of 'hey look at this crazy stuff' and 'oh ok heres some reason that crazy stuff just happened'. Really not much dialogue, just enough to fill the gaps.

If you just want to see some monsters and armies battle scenes this should be fine as a rental. If you feel let down for $5-6 you may have matured beyond fantasy monsters on historical monuments themed movies, reevaluate your own decision making not this movies failure to touch your emotions and provide deep insight. I am pretty sure it is not trying to do either. There is like a 20 minute short film worth of space for story and dialogue in between all the swords and arrows and teeth. For me that is fine, they could take 30 years trying to rationally explain weird lizard armies attacking the great wall of China and I would likely still be calling BS. I don't feel like they tried to convince me so much as just offer a story for me to accept and enjoy or not, in a respectful dont take it serious just have fun way. So I did, I didn't take it serious and I had fun watching it.

I cannot fathom how people can expect enough from this movie to find a complaint with it. Monsters attack great wall of China, what in that says expect deep plot and characters? expect teeth, lots of teeth, convincingly well modeled and textured computer generated teeth.

This is a solid four-star action movie - I'm happy I watched it, but I'm not going to think about it ever again, except when I think about ridiculously impractical-but-awesomely-cool-looking Crane Fu. I'd put it in the same camp as Die Hard, Commando, and Star Ship Troopers. If you try to engage your brain, you will find flaws, never be able to stop, and hate this movie. If you let the experience wash over you, you'll enjoy it. Be a leaf on the wind.

The choreography is outrageous and really enjoyable. The fights are completely bullsh*t, and crafted to deliver a jolt of nutrition-free excitement to your brain stem. The costumes and sets are colorful and pleasingly ornate. If anyone ever needs to be killed by a 1000 pound cow/dog/shark while wearing useless armor, it's nice to know it looks cool.

Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martel), and Tian Jing get good screen time and do what they can with the dialog they're given. They only need to deliver the lines well enough to make the scenes move forward, and Matt and Pedro do better than that. I'm surprised how little mileage the story got out of heavy weights Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau. I didn't even know Dafoe was in this movie so I'm not sure how much of a ticket effect his name provided. I also didn't realize Eddie Peng was in this movie until the credits - good to see that rising star get into something big, but too bad his character didn't do anything interesting. (Eddie Peng needs to play Spike in the live action Cowboy Bebop, amarite?)

An action packed film, with an interesting plot that is held together with very good special effects. Basically, Matt Damon and his friend eventually want to find the magic powder the Chinese have (gunpowder). They get captured and eventually help defend the Great Wall from invading "creatures". Great action, good acting, believable plot and scary creatures make for a very good "I want to get away from reality" film. But this is not one for children as the creature scenes get intense and nasty. But for you adults, yes I DO recommend.

2D version was good, so I would say the story and the presentation and the scenery were good. I do not like having to buy a 2D version and then, later, buying a 3D version because I did not know if a 3D version would be issued. It would be better if Amazon would research that information and include it in the description of the item(s). That being said, the 3D version elevated the movie from good to GREAT. Special effects and locations were spectacular. Picture, color, clarity, and surround sound effects, great. A large part of the picture quality must be attributed to the superb 2016 LG Signature Series OLED 3D TV I bought from Amazon, after they had all but disappeared from most other places.

Do Not let critics dissuade you from viewing this film. "The Great Wall" is visually stunning film. The story line is consistent, the characters are fluid, there may be some cliches but what the hell, even Star Wars had a few. You won't be disappointed, this is a solid action and bonafide sci-fi thriller with lots of fire breathing and eye-goaging monster gore. It's a perfect "gather the family together on Saturday night with popcorn and soda" flick.

I am so glad that my curiosity outweighed the negative reviews that I saw. Enjoyed this movie immensely. The combination of creative talents and acting talents of Zhang Yimou, Jing Tian, Matt Damon, Hanyu Zhang, Pedro Pascal, and Lu Han enrich and elaborately paint the combination of history and sci-fi. The music enriches the scenes. The costumes, photography, scene design, and special effects take you on an adventure across time and imagination. I vaguely remember a saying about openness across cultures allows for the exchange of ideas making both stronger and elevating both. The story itself is an example, as well as the making of the story.
