The National Genealogical Society (NGS) announces the publication of "Genetic Genealogy in Practice," the first workbook on genetic genealogy. Written by Blaine T. Bettinger, PhD, JD, and Debbie Parker Wayne, CG, CGL, the book provides family historians and genealogists who have just begun to explore genetic genealogy practical, easy to understand information that they can apply to their research. As Wayne notes in her blog, Deb’s "Delvings in Genealogy," “DNA can seem complex to many of us, but this book will guide you and help build your knowledge level one step at a time.”

At their own pace, readers learn the basic concepts of genetic genealogy. They then build on that knowledge as they study the testing, analysis, and application of YDNA, X-DNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and autosomal DNA (atDNA) to reach and support genealogical conclusions. Each chapter includes exercises with answer keys for hands-on practice.

Blaine Bettinger is an intellectual property attorney in Syracuse, New York. The author of The Genetic Genealogist blog, he is a genealogy educator, a trustee of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and organizer of the Shared cM Project, a crowdsourced project examining the associations between genetic data and genealogical relationships.

Debbie Parker Wayne is a professional genealogist who has conducted research for individuals as well as for the PBS series “Finding Your Roots” with Henry Louis Gates Jr. and other
television shows. She is an award-winning author, the coordinator for genetic genealogy institute courses, and the DNA Project Chair for the Texas State Genealogical Society.

Important Contribution with Lots of Practical Work

The exercises in this book are serious work, and this book is going to take some time and focus to get through. To be clear, that is praise of the book. The authors are not just testing what you read at the end of the chapter, they are making you apply these concepts. That's important, because genealogy is not a trivial topic. The book is very well written by arguably the two biggest names in genetic genealogy education. At a conference, I was privileged to hear Debbie Parker Wayne speak - she is brilliant at making this material understandable. There was a feeling I had after DNA-testing the family and then starting to get queries full of buzzwords that I had no clue about and requests for my tree -- from maybe 5th cousins -- that I was drowning in a sea of my own ignorance and just needed to check out of DNA for about 10 years until the field got more obvious to me. (When I hear smart genealogists complain about not getting responses to DNA queries, this may be why -- it's overwhelming to me for sure.) Quality time with this book (much more to be spent) gives me hope that the topic will eventually become something I can make sense of. You can get a lot out of this book that isn't in the more anecdotal (though also interesting) treatments of genetic genealogy by other writers.

Print edition is an excellent workbook.

I first purchased the Kindle edition but found that the charts were unreadable due to low resolution. I tried various strategies to magnify the illustrations but ended up purchasing the print edition. The Kindle edition is, however, worth the $10 as an adjunct to the print edition. And

Amazon is working with the publisher to fix the Kindle edition.

I have worked through the exercises for most chapters. It took a few hours for each chapter but I don't think I could master the subject any other way. To be fair, I should admit that I already had some background in genetics, having studied it in college and having recently read Aulicino's book on genetic genealogy and DNA testing.

The exercises convince me that the level of complexity of Bettinger's explanations is necessary to really grasp the subject.

Gateway Book to Genetic Genealogy

Thanks to the improvements in the technology and the steady decline of cost of testing, anyone can now participate in personalized human DNA research as a citizen scientist. With TV programs and news articles highlighting the amazing discoveries that are being made, it has caught the interest of the general public and people are becoming more interested in who they are, genetically, from whence did their DNA arise. As of May 2016, the number of people having at least one of the three types of DNA testing was doubling every 16 months, and unlike the hidden research projects of the world of hard science, these results are almost all offered up for public comparison. The motivation is driven by genealogists and the curious. My own journey has uncovered the unknown identity of my paternal grandfather through the discovery of two unknown distant cousins through matching. Of the two Bettinger books, this book is both a text and a workbook and opens up the gateway for your personal search.

Purchase the Hard Copy instead of Kindle Version for This Book

This book is a prerequisite for an upcoming class that I am taking. The book is a excellent workbook and provides good information for the genealogist who are branching out or have already delved into genetic genealogy. I purchased the Kindle version of the book initially and am coming back to purchase the paperback version of the book. Being as this is a workbook and contains many charts, family tree examples, etc, trying to use this type of workbook on Kindle can be somewhat frustrating. I have purchased many books for Kindle and never had a complaint about the format but this type of book just should not be offered in Kindle format.

Genetic Genealogy is the latest methodology for serious genealogists. This book introduces the novice/layperson to key concepts, one chapter at a time. Then, at the end of each chapter, it has workbook questions to help you make sure you understood the key points. This book can be worked through individually, but it is also a great resource for groups learning how to do genetic genealogy. It covers applications for all the different kinds of DNA tests available, and helps the reader to analyze interpretative situations.

This is the best tool I've worked with so far in my quest to understand how to apply genetic testing results to my personal family genealogy. There are many blogs, books, courses, etc. out there that never seem to move past basic genetic biology you learned in high school. They stop short of discussing analytical techniques. I want to know how to get the most out of tools like gene mapping and triangulation, and just what do centiMorgans and SNPs really represent in my own data. I'm still working with this book but so far it is answering my questions. I particularly appreciate the exercises that follow each chapter. They drill down to what is truly important about the information you just read and how to apply it to your own results.

This is a superb work book for gaining a better understanding of Genetic Genealogy. The explanations are very understandable and the exercises complement and enhance understanding the various subjects they discuss. I recommend this book for anyone who is beginning to use genetics in their genealogical research. Also, I think moderate to experienced researchers could use this volume for a reference book.
