Editorial Reviews
Review
"This genre-reviving inaugural entry is cleverly paced and plotted with serpentine flourishes and enough action and romance to satisfy fans of Anne Rice as well as fantasy readers. A solid, enduring, addictive vampire epic." - Kirkus Reviews
"Absorbing and disturbing, the book delves into potent themes of religion, politics, and morality... This novel delivers everything readers expect from a dark fantasy about vampires: a fascinating new world, characters worth caring about, and thought-provoking themes, all wrapped within an enthralling story." - BlueInk starred review
"Tense plotting and pacing complement strong characterizations... Choosing a Master is fun vampire fare, with surprisingly deep relationships and a uniquely twisted mythology." - Foreword Reviews

This is the first book in a "new" series and the fifth book in the sage of Erin Rose. If you haven't read them you won't really know who Erin is, but she is central to this story. This is easily the best in the series. Good action with very well drawn characters. There are multiple threads which initially seem unrelated, but all have to do with John, a human with very unusual blood. Everyone including the vampires want it for different reasons. In Perlows' world there are two types of vampires, Spectavi and Sanguan. One drinks synthetic blood the other feeds on people. This is a nice wrinkle that lets him add much to the story line. And for John, he just wants to be left alone with his love, Madison. I also liked the pacing on this novel and look forward to the next book.

I enjoy reading different authors' ideas about vampires and this volume was one of the best. I won't do any spoiler lines, but one particular ability of this author's vampires was new and refreshing to me. Easy to read and I found only one "smirk", a word I find way overused and misused by many authors. Grammar usage was excellent - the misuse of which is another pet peeve of mine. Congrats, Mr. Perlow!

This is a different take on vampire lore. There are two vampire philosophies clashing here, one espousing artificial blood and one for human blood only. Tossed in the middle is John, a human with "superb" blood; he can cure other sick humans or be a gourmet feast for the human blood drinkers. The story races from New Orleans to Paris to Virginia. Oh, yeah, vampires can't have sex, but their bite is arousing...

I really had a hard time reading this book. I tried two times and put it away before I finally finished it on the third attempt. I will not be reading any more of this author work.

I started this series long ago, not knowing that this particular book was the first one. Though the first one I read was a bit confusing at first, it progressed along well, with me still trying to figure out who Vera was. Now it makes complete sense. I don't know how I missed this book. It is a 'must read' if you want to make all the pieces of this vampire puzzle fit.

I enjoyed this novel. Well written, great concept, and amazing characters. Not to mention the action. Super human feats await the reader. Be sure to grab it and settle down, get comfy, and have a great read...

This book was hard to get into but once I did it was a good read. It kept me wanting to learn more about John and his choices.
