Adaptation agriculture: How to grow food when you can't buy seeds, fertilizers, or pesticides.

Bringing dynamic back into vegetable gardening, seed saving, and breeding of plants and animals. A joyful and accessible approach to growing tasty, productive, and resiliently diverse food.

Advocating a return to traditional regenerative horticulture methods of gardening and farming, while minimizing the use of industrialized methods. Focusing on communities, and local varieties of crops and animals. Biodiversity and cross pollination allow selection for crops that thrive under ever changing conditions, lessening the need for costly inputs, like poisons, fertilizer, materials, and labor. Less labor means more time for friends, family, music, dancing, and joy.

The book includes detailed suggestions for developing a more reliable food system using local crop varieties. The techniques taught in this book can bring self-reliance and sustainable food security to small scale back yard beginner gardens, large scale farms, and permaculture food forests.

A chapter discusses pollination and the benefits of encouraging cross-pollination.

Chapters deal with breeding tomatoes, corn, beans, squash, and grains. Includes tips on growing many other vegetable varieties. The appendix includes a summary of which vegetables and grains work easiest with landrace gardening.

One chapter extends the principles of local gardening to breeding chickens, honeybees, mushrooms, and trees.

About the Author

Joseph adopted the principles landrace gardening in response to the harsh growing conditions in a high-altitude, short-season, desert garden. Instead of relying on expensive poisons, labor, and materials to coddle the plants, he encourages genetic diversity, cross-pollination, and survival of the fittest, allowing the plants to adapt themselves to the current and ever-changing ecosystem, thus simplifying gardening and seed saving. Joseph loves eating, farming, swimming, hot-springs, sunbathing, bird-watching, running, yoga, leggings, kilts, playing guitar, singing, and living habitually barefoot.

Great book
This book flies in the face of the mainstream narrative of growing food. Incredible information, the promiscuous pollination bit is hilarious but true. A true game changer for gardeners who were taught not to cross pollinate their seeds, variety is the spice of life and this book can bring back thY variety of seeds we have lost from monoculture farming and bad gardening advice. Joseph's "modern landrace" [ancient?] aka. evolutionary plant breeding techniques have had an impact on my gardening and plant breeding efforts for many years. Joseph puts much love into cultivating the relationships he has with both people and plants in a very free yet innovative and revolutionary way. If you have never heard of Joseph Lofthouse, his vegetable varieties, or landrace gardening then you are in for a treat.

This book is long overdue for the fact that everyone needs to know about modern landrace breeding. Everyone needs to know that saving seed from F1 hybrids is not only safe and okay, but that the fruit and vegetables will not be "off type" as the large corporations would have you believe. If one can learn to take a more free approach to gardening and seed saving you will experience much of the joy joseph receives when he gardens as well.

For the academic and scientific crowd Joseph does not disappoint. His interesting inter-species hybrid vegetables offer many new possibilities for the adventurous. Joseph may well be on the cusp of transforming what we know of as a "tomato" into something much more delicious, interesting, and different from we all know and sometimes hate. May tomatoes never be the same!

This book offers much more than what can be put into words. It may very well change the way you look at plant breeding and gardening forever!

A perfect companion book to the wonderful "The Lost Art of Potato Breeding (Garden Alchemy)" by Rebsie Fairholm. These two books will forever be side by side on my bookshelf.

This is a great book. It's a short, inspiring, informative read that blew my mind at least once per chapter. I'd recommend it to any serious gardener, student of permaculture, or fan of Dr. Carol Deppe. Mr. Lofthouse's basic premise is that anyone can do landrace breeding - adapting a plant to your own local conditions, whatever they may be - and after reading this book, I think I'm going to try adapting a local strain of squash for my difficult (hot, humid, ultra buggy) conditions. It gave me the knowledge and the confidence to feel that this type of plant breeding really is within reach for anyone!

I'm a pretty serious food grower, and I've read a lot of gardening books. This is one of the few I've read in the past few years that introduced brand new concepts to my noggin. Great stuff, I can't recommend it highly enough. Thanks, Mr. Lofthouse!

PS, If you're looking for any of the seedstock Lofthouse mentions in the book, check out the folks at Experimental Farm Network, who carry a number of his experiments.

I've been following what the author has been writing about on a couple internet forums for a couple years and have bought a bunch of his seeds. If you're unfamiliar with his way of gardening, this book will change your entire way of thinking when it comes to having a garden. I know everything I've read from him has made me rethink how I garden and everything is far more productive and delicious than ever before. Anyways, great book, well written, and well worth the money!

This book is written like someone talking to you about their project or hobby. This made it a quick and easy read. It's not very information dense, however there are nuggets every now and then. This book is largely about his own experience creating locally adapted varieties of crops. There are some pictures and artwork throughout the book, if it's not a plant or crop it's not usually addressed. Many of them are of other farmers, simple science diagrams or of seeds.

It's a good introduction to the topic and has got me excited to save all my hybrids this year instead of tossing the seeds.

Why 5 stars? Simply because this book is unique in it's genre. There is simply no other book speaking about this subject.
Joseph Lofthouse's "Landrace gardening" is probably the easiest way to do plant breeding as an amateur gardener. It may also hold the keys to the future of food security and biodiversity.
The book may be not perfect in every aspect and maybe there are some subjects where I won't agree with everything. But there is so much information in it that is just great and that I have never seen somewhere else! This book may become a new classic.

After finishing agricultural college I was on a Greek island enjoying a the sun sea and air. I met a Shepard. He had sheep and goats which he herded and made and sold beautiful hard cheeses. With all my wisdom gained from 2 years at college I proceeded to in form him of all the better ways he could do his job. He listened then said But that is not God's way.
All I can say about this book is that it feels so right. I believe the old Shepard would approve. This is God's way.

I will definitely save more seeds and try to find more local varieties. I am too old and I haven't the space to play around waiting for my own plants to adapt. However, in the long term plants adapted to the local environment, cold winters and hot dry summers would be a sustainable way forward. Plants I have bought have almost never done as well as those I have grown from seed here, or taken as cuttings.
