Pure Poultry: Living Well with Heritage Chickens, Turkeys and Ducks Paperback – November 1, 2013

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

Hatching a sustainable life with heritage poultry

Houdan. Nankin. Indian Runner. Narragansett. These may sound like exotic place names or unusual varieties of produce, but each actually refers to one of the many hundreds of lesser-known poultry breeds which tempt the livestock owner who's prepared to venture into less familiar territory. Providing an alternative to commercial breeds and hybrids, heritage breeds each boast their own unique characteristics and personality traits, and are a valuable (and entertaining) addition to a sustainable food system.

Pure Poultry is the first book in nearly a hundred years to focus specifically on heritage breeds of chickens, turkeys and ducks and their role in a self-reliant lifestyle. This timely, beautifully illustrated resource includes:

  • Detailed guidelines on everything from housing, breeding and day-to-day care, to processing, cooking and preserving
  • Much-needed information on using heritage breeds for egg and meat production
  • Tips, inspiration, recommended reading, and additional resources
  • A unique planning worksheet that simplifies the process of starting out with poultry.

Brimming with quiet humor, Pure Poultry is an immensely readable "how-to and why-to" based entirely on personal experience-including plenty of lessons learned the hard way. Pure Poultry shows how heritage-breed poultry can enhance and deepen anyone's quality of life, whether you have a farm, a small backyard, or a neighbor with space to share.

One of the very best chicken books. I love this book because it’s easy to read, like talking with a friend. It’s full of information told like a story. It’s not boring or bland. Really can not recommend this book enough. I LOVE it and have learned so much.

When I read the description of Pure Poultry I thought it was going to be about raising heritage poultry, however, this book is primarily a chatty, loosely organized tale of the author's decision to live on a farm, off the grid, with stories of poultry woven through. No problem there, since it was reasonably entertaining, however, it is not the book I thought I was buying.

The appendices do contain good resources if you are looking for solid information on raising heritage poultry.

One thing that did bother me about the book was the chapter about having other animals with poultry. While the author shows disdain for dogs, giving one reason for her dislike as being that a dog would bother the wildlife that was living around the farm, she then relates that her indoor cat escapes from the house, but only hunts small birds and not the poultry. Since it has been established by multiple studies that domestic cats are the greatest threat to many endangered species of songbirds, Redhed Miller's concern for the wildlife on her farm rings hollow. Instead it comes across as an excuse to defend her choice to not own a dog rather than genuine concern for wildlife.

The chapters are mostly very short (Often less than three pages), and the writing style is very chatty and casual.

Definitely an amusing, if lightweight, story.

I don't agree with her very simplistic explanation of what heritage birds are (she should have researched it a bit more) but their experiences make nice, light reading.

I was expecting this to have practical information. Instead it is a collection of "cute" blog posts about some experiences a homesteader had while raising chickens. I did not feel it was worth the money.

There isn't a snowball's chance in a hot oven that I'll ever be a farmer, sustainable or otherwise, but I could not put this book down. I came across it unexpectedly and was "captured" with the first page. Ms. Miller's warmth, humor, adventurous spirit, and writing are so engaging that there were moments I wanted to pack a bag and spend time with her and her husband and meet those darn chickens! I was going to give the copy that had been given to me to a young relative who will be starting farm life soon, but I couldn't bring myself to giving up my copy so ordered one for her. Worth every penny.

Nice little book about someone's love of poultry raising and living off the grid, but lacks a little substance. She is a very pleasant writer and makes you feel as if you would like to have them for your neighbor, but I would like a little more info on how to get into this hobby.
