Invasive species are everywhere, from forests and prairies to mountaintops and river mouths. Their rampant nature and sheer numbers appear to overtake fragile native species and forever change the ecosystems that they depend on.

Concerns that invasive species represent significant threats to global biodiversity and ecological integrity permeate conversations from schoolrooms to board rooms, and concerned citizens grapple with how to rapidly and efficiently manage their populations. These worries have culminated in an ongoing “war on invasive species,” where the arsenal is stocked with bulldozers, chainsaws, and herbicides put to the task of their immediate eradication. In Hawaii, mangrove trees (Avicennia spp.) are sprayed with glyphosate and left to decompose on the sandy shorelines where they grow, and in Washington, helicopters apply the herbicide Imazapyr to smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) growing in estuaries. The “war on invasive species” is in full swing, but given the scope of such potentially dangerous and ecologically degrading eradication practices, it is necessary to question the very nature of the battle.

Beyond the War on Invasive Species offers a much-needed alternative perspective on invasive species and the best practices for their management based on a holistic, permaculture-inspired framework. Utilizing the latest research and thinking on the changing nature of ecological systems, Beyond the War on Invasive Species closely examines the factors that are largely missing from the common conceptions of invasive species, including how the colliding effects of climate change, habitat destruction, and changes in land use and management contribute to their proliferation.

There is more to the story of invasive species than is commonly conceived, and Beyond the War on Invasive Species offers ways of understanding their presence and ecosystem effects in order to make more ecologically responsible choices in land restoration and biodiversity conservation that address the root of the invasion phenomenon. The choices we make on a daily basis―the ways we procure food, shelter, water, medicine, and transportation―are the major drivers of contemporary changes in ecosystem structure and function; therefore, deep and long-lasting ecological restoration outcomes will come not just from eliminating invasive species, but through conscientious redesign of these production systems.

It engages from the first page. It builds an edifice that should make everyone think again about environmental restoration. It is truly amazing (horrific) what is being done in the name of environmental restoration--by well-intentioned people (and corporate money and policy). The book is also a guidebook for practitioners. It is also a grounded book about ways of thinking expansively and holistically about land management. It (selections of it) should also be read by every environmental studies 101 class across the country. Moreover, the anecdotes and readable science make for powerful storytelling. It's clear Orion has thought about this for a long time and looked into every angle of so-called invasive species.

Changed my whole perspective on plants and diversity.

This book is incredible. I am a Michigan native and I know the widespread sentiment of hatred towards invasive species like Asian carp and zebra mussels, and I now know how ridiculous this blind hatred is. This book blew my mind.

I'm not in the restoration field, but have seriously thought about transition into it because of the state of our earth and the rampant effects of climate change, but I was shocked to see what really passes as "restoration." Widespread use of pesticides against invasive species is ridiculous! Especially when they are serving a much needed niche in the broken ecosystems that they "invade."

We must look to the underlying issues that are affecting our ecosystems. A whole-system approach to restoration is needed, not a war on invasive species. Tao Orion has done an incredible job of showing what a permaculture approach to restoration looks like -- and let me tell you, it looks wonderful. If enough people are educated on this issue, human relationships with nature could change profoundly and for the better.

This book is amazing. It is extraordinarily well-written. Its engaging and easy to read, while bringing up incrediblly well-researched information and ideas for effective approaches to heal the damage humans have done to our earth. It has definitely made me rethink my approach to different "weeds" growing on my property and also motivated me to want to help change public policy.

Great read. A new perspective on nature, our strange opinions of how nature should be and how we are poisoning our native lands just because we value one plant over another. This book offers a new mindset and a better approach.

A timely discourse as Climate Change & a World pandemic create a new world experience. The irrational preference of preferred invasives over medicinal invasives is discussed (ex. pretty Tulips over shrubery of medicinal Japanese Knotweed, for instance). The irrationality of harming an entire ecosystem with ecocides to reduce one "unwanted" invasive is also discussed.

Not really a permaculture newbie book, but if you've been in it for a while, you'll appreciate the concepts that it puts forth. Good real-world examples of what the author is saying.
