Anyone who had the pleasure of reading the original edition of "Brave New World" published in the 1930s understands the nature of the concerns Aldous Huxley was exploring in this science fiction approach to the issues associated with modernization and where unleashed science and technology are taking us. In this marvelous companion non-fiction work published some twenty-some years later, Huxley further defines and describes the substance and consequences of his original concerns as outlined in "Brave New World". These concerns range from the fairly mundane issues of overpopulation to the quality of life for citizens in such a future society to the concerns for individual freedom and consciousness, given what he terms to be the increasing capability and interest of the upper reaches to mold and control the attitudes, dispositions, and perceptions of its individual citizens.
Huxley is uniquely qualified to engage in such an exploration, largely due to his stature given the fateful ways in which so many aspects of his prognostications about the direction of future society have been substantiated and actualized before our very eyes, including, among other things, the development of nuclear weapons and the use of nuclear power. So too, as we approach ever greater integration of national economies into something gradually approaching a single global one, his fears regarding the likelihood of the rise of `fascism with a friendly face' seems much more to the mark than did all the fears of the Orwellian `1984' type totalitarian government. Yet he also is known and respected for having been, like Edmund Wilson was here in the United States in the same time frame, as an eminent man of letters, a man capable of successfully straddling the various academic fields with a vision so powerful and so true to the facts as to allow him immense credibility and latitude.
Here he one again provides us with a fascinating, provocative, and, in retrospect, remarkably accurate of what would come to transpire in the years of the 20th century. As even Huxley himself admits, much of what has already come into existence did so much more rapidly and much more widely than he originally imagined it might. His accomplishment in this superb book is to survey the prospects for what increasingly now, in the first years of the 21st century, is now an uncomfortably accurate set of predictions of not only how we live, but under what particular set of social, economic, and political circumstances. Reading this book, in combination with several of his other texts, such as the wonderful "Doors OF Perception", helps immeasurably to liberate one from the kind of propaganda-influenced and politically correct sets of personal perceptions so many of us view the world through. This is indeed a seminal book, one that any serious student of the human condition and who lives in the so-called advanced social democracies of the western world must read to comprehend the nature of the environment he or she exists within. Great follow up to Brave New World

This is Huxley's appraisal of how things have gone 27 years after he wrote Brave New World. One of the big issues he discusses is overpopulation. The developed world is actually now seeing declining birth rates and some countries are seeing actual population declines. Much of the rest of the world is seeing slowing growth. So, at least one of his points is showing some improvement. However, another point is getting much worse - government and corporate propaganda. He never could have seen social media coming, but it has accelerated the ability to act not only as tightly controlled propaganda, but also as a soma to millions seeking diversion and validation. The book is a short read and not too difficult. I highly recommend it.

None of the ideas are horribly new. Guess what he is a globalist who has the desire to reduce the world's population. Shocker. Does he 1) not have kids himself or 2) pen this book as a suicide note to help reduce the world's population. Nah, globalist are not known for living by their own strictures or are really concerned with integrity. Us low IQ plebs need to do the world a favor and keep a Malthusian fanny pack on us (or outright kill ourselves,) so we don't have kids, so we don't have to end up in the brave new world.

This is a breakdown of the tools of the authoritarian structure he had described years before that begins and ends with a diatribe about overpopulation. He goes into propaganda by on ideals etc.

I'd get this book it is very quotable. When he gets into drugs and talks about how that will become the very essence of the pursuit of happiness. (Enter Tim Leary.) There are some other good ones. He also gives some good book recommendations (the power elite by C. Wright Mills and organization man by William Whyte are books in my shopping cart that have been recommended to name two) to look into as far as future reading.

Essays Updating Original Brave New World

Twenty-seven years after Brave New World's first publication, the author updates the urgency of his first book's warnings. This is not another novel, but it adds Huxley's justifications and explanations for writing the novel, while also including evidence for why his earlier predictions were coming true faster than he had imagined. He also compares his book to Orwell's 1984 book, explaining differences and similarities.

There are many interesting concepts here, but the author is acting more as an investigative journalist, often citing the works of other. In addition, although many of his sources are dated and incomplete, his observations and conclusions are generally accurate and still relevant.

Huxley's chapters cover different topics, but must be read in order because later chapters often reply on materials discussed earlier.

The book is not too long, but because of the depth of issues reviewed, I recommend reading chapters completely before taking a break or reading further.

Good to read after finishing the original novel.

Okay. If you want to see what someone accurately predicted about our present world circumstance from 60 years ago this book is amazing. I almost fell out of my chair reading it for some of the astounding predictions Huxley made in 1958 that are spot on about how society has changed since then. He did not use vague generalities but direct detailed predictions based on his remarkable, almost supernatural, understanding of human nature. Do not read this if you have grave doubts about our future now...for human over population and the growth of mega billionaires makes our destiny very dark indeed. But, if you want to be prepared for what is going to happen to the human experience on planet Earth next, read this book. Nostradamas can step aside...he is a pure amateur compared to Huxley!

This is not infact Brave New World but a collection notes on A Brave New World. Having read the novel and moving to these afterthoughts by many scholars and the author himself its a satisfying read but is reserved only for fans of the novel, a novel that is a far more interesting read than the reviews and discussions presented here.
