In this optimistic but too-broad look at the present economic crisis and the opportunities it presents, social and business commentator Florida (The Rise of the Creative Class) examines the latest of the "Great Resets," moments of transformative upheaval (like the Great Depression) "when new technologies and technological systems arise, when the economy is recast and society remade, and when the places where we live and work change to suit new needs." Though he cautions that "not all Resets are the same," and presents enough real-life examples, Florida too often rushes back to neat generalities and cheerleading: "we must do all we can to turn service jobs into more innovative, more engaging, more fulfilling and much better-paid work." Florida also has a tendency toward gratuitous personal stories. Though the book would have benefited from fewer platitudes and authorial intrusions, the problem that looms largest for Florida-and other post-crash survival guide authors-is that the national economic calamity hasn't fully played itself out, meaning that the ability of any observer to describe the specifics of its turnaround are necessarily limited.

The Great Reset

This book illuminates the difficulty for our economy. "The rich get richer and the poor get poorer". The gap between the CEO of a company's pay and the person generating the income via work - creating software, answering phone calls - i.e. customer service, or making a product (i.e. a car) become a larger multiple every year! The story of Henry Ford who increased the daily wage of a line worker making a model T from $1 per day to $5 per day and hence the line worker could buy a car speaks volumes. Look at the CEOs salary and benefits (yes, stock options, free rides on the company jet for personal travel, plus standard items like health benefits) and the divide that into the CEOs and one gets the multiple [in many companies this can be a very well guarded secret!]. This book is clear on the choices that could be made as they were made in the US economy twice before.

Where some doom-sayers fret over our future, Florida is comfortable here dissecting the lessons of the past. His pithy pop-pundit style draws you in and makes it easy to visualize the comparison-contrast between our current economic situation and previous Panics and Depressions. His pithy pop-pundit style also leaves me wondering if there's that much more said than in the original magazine article. All in all, as with Florida's earlier efforts, this is a book I wish I had written.

I found the perspectives in this book as relates to our past very thought provoking. As one of those in the "older generation" it helps me recognize the changes needed to insure the future for my grandchildren. Major changes in the way children learn and need to be taught is one of those. The change in the U.S. role in the world is another. A recognition that the way we view our transportation needs for the future is another. I found this a very useful guide to change my thinking.

Written more for corporations than workers

While the book provides some illuminating history and seems to suggest a positive way of looking at the outcome of the recession, his predictions and prescriptions might make corporations looking to hire people happy, but if you are a worker, among other things he seems to suggest that you should rent your home as you can expect to be moving around the country in constant search of work and/or be willing to commute long distances to get it. The beneficiaries of the economic growth path Florida points to would seem to benefit the few, not the many.

This book put into perspective some of the outcomes we may anticipate from the Great Recession, and I thought his research of the 1870's Recession and the Great Depression was excellent. His conclusion that much good will ultimately, but painfully, come from this recession was not a point that I expected, but he showed clearly how many new inventions and positive changes occur from the ashes of each recession/depression as new ways are required to deal with the new post-crash environment. I have recommended this book to many of my friends who are avid readers.
