I'm really enjoying reading and studying this bible.
I wanted a comprehensive NRSV reference Bible with the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament. I also wanted it to have footnotes, scholarly essays, maps and commentary on most verses -- as many resources as could be crammed into one volume. In addition, I wanted a reference Bible that contained input from both Jewish and Christian scholars.
The NRSV New Oxford Annotated Bible (with the Apocrypha) met these requirements.
I chose a hardcover 2001 New Oxford Annotated Bible, Third Edition, instead of the 2010 Fourth Edition, because of reader reviews noting that the Bible text in the Fourth Edition has smaller type, in contrast to the Third Edition's large, readable type face.
I'm getting older -- eyes are a bit weaker -- and did not want to struggle with small type.
Readers should be aware that the other resources in this edition of the Bible -- the footnotes, concordance, indexes, maps, etc. -- have various smaller type faces than the main Bible text itself. But I don't have a problem using a magnifying glass when necessary sometimes. I just didn't want the Bible text itself to be hard to read.
Reviewers appear happy with the 2010 Fourth Edition and point out that the Fourth Edition was updated and has more recent scholarship. However, I have found this 2001 Third edition to be quite scholarly, and so far have found no major errors or indications that it is seriously outdated.
Copies of the Third Edition are also less expensive than copies of the Fourth Edition. I was able to buy a used hardcover copy that had only two or three written comments with highlighting from the previous owner and a missing dust jacket. Since I usually throw out dust jackets, this was not a problem.
The bible was otherwise in perfect condition and arrived promptly from the used book seller who was marketing it through Amazon.

Students, professors and general readers alike have relied upon the Oxford Annotated Bible for essential scholarship and guidance to the world of the Bible for four decades. Now a new editorial board and team of contributors have completely updated this classic work. The result is a volume
which maintains and extends the excellence the Annotated's users have come to expect, bringing new insights, information, and approaches to bear upon the understanding of the text of the Bible.
The new edition includes a full index to all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. And, to make certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately 40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams.
With the best of the Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new information and new approaches represented in current scholarship, the Third Edition will continue to serve as the reader's and student's constant resource.

Review
From reviews of the previous edition:
"The New Oxford Annotated Bible with its excellent footnotes and concise introductory materials has a thoroughness and clarity that should prove invaluable to the lay reader and scholar alike."--Frederick Buechner
"I know of no other annotated Bible that is as rich as The New Oxford in both the precision of its textual notes and the clarity and helpfulness of its introductions. It will be and extraordinarily useful edition to have on one's library shelf."--Andrew M. Greeley

Very well researched and lots of detail with thousands of years of useful information

My very first purchase on Amazon almost eighteen years ago, and arguably the best. Not only the best author, this publication has to be the greatest edition as well. Tons of supportive text and illustrations to back-up an outstanding list of subjects, stories, lessons and people. It surely is as the famed anagram states, Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.

This is an informative edition of the Bible and has been compiled by a committee of theologians that give great insight into the translation of the original texts. The footnotes and cross-references are excellent. I don't like the layout of this Bible, as the "apocryphal" books are not included in the proper places in the Old Testament; being a Catholic, I like to find my books where they belong and not somewhere hidden in the back. If you are not a Catholic, this is an excellent translation; and, you also have the opportunity to read the apocrypha from the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches as well. It is the only study Bible for Protestants that I know of that is this detailed and includes so many notations about translation differences and includes every Scripture book that Christianity as a whole accepts. It is good for Protestants to read the apocrypha, as there are many references in them that explain why Catholics and Orthodox Churches have the traditions and beliefs that they do. So when you ask a Catholic, "Why do you believe that?" you can find the answer only in the Catholic Bible, but now also in the apocryphal books included in this text. Catholics will cite verses that explain our faith but do not appear in other Protestant translations. Also, an important keynote: the committee who put this translation together included theologians from the Roman Catholic Church, Judaism (very helpful with Old Testament notations and translations), and many other Protestant Christian faiths. It is an acceptable translation for Catholics to read and refer to, as it has been officially approved as a good study resource for all Christians, including Roman Catholics. I prefer the Little Rock Catholic Study Bible to this one, as the "apocryphal" books are placed where they belong in the Old Testament.

I have used the Oxford Annotated Bible sine the first edition came out 40+ (?) years ago. The translation is both academically as precise as possible, and the text itself is quite readable. Love the commentary on each page which is also reliable. Personally, I would not use any other version.

Took a long time to arrive but well worth the wait

Very clear, unbiased translation. Enjoyed it very much particularly interested in the Apocrypha section. The book did take a long time to arrive due to delivery issues and it is rather expensive but well worth it
