Straight Talk on Terrorism

Terrorism is a complicated concept, despite what the politicians and talking heads may tell you in soundbites. Actual textbooks on the subject of terrorism often fall into this wasteland of technical terms and alphabet soup with all of these different groups and concepts. Bruce Hoffman’s Inside Terrorism is a highly used textbook in courses on terrorism in undergraduate and graduate courses and after reading it, I understand why.

Hoffman lays out the nuts and bolts of terrorism in a very clean and straightforward way at least as much as possible when terrorism is concerned. He tries to give the reader a panoramic view of how terrorism has evolved over time from the old models of terrorism to so called new models and how new terrorism has built off old terrorism. You can read it as an entire book or just an individual chapter if you’re interested in a particular topic such as how communication by terrorist organizations has evolved over time. I was very impressed at how he was able to make an informative and yet readable book on a complex topic.

There are conclusions drawn in the chapters of this book that hint about the things to come. Almost ten years after the revision of this book there are events happening that were foreshadowed in the book. Specifically, the chapter on the use of media hints toward the end, that there may be advances in information sharing that we do not know about. Enter social media and the effect it is having on the surge of ISIS.
