Times have sure changed since the 1970s, the setting for some of Wambaugh's best earlier works such as The New Centurions and The Onion Field. Grossly understaffed, the officers of Hollywood Station find themselves writing bogus field interviews with nonexistent white suspects in minority neighborhoods to avoid allegations of racial profiling. Crystal meth rules the streets, and crackheads and glass freaks dressed in costume (Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Darth Vader, Elmo) work the tourist strip, bumming money for their next fix. With an impressive array of police characters, from surfer dude partners "Flotsam" and "Jetsam" to aspiring actor "Hollywood" Nate Weiss and single mother Budgie Polk, Wambaugh creates a realistic microcosm of the modern-day LAPD. *Starred Review* Wambaugh, awarded the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 2004, returns to the crazed world of the LAPD for the first time since his 1983 novel, The Delta Star. It is a triumphant return. Not only does Wambaugh give readers his usual feast of black humor, as well as deliver another cast of edgy LAPD cops and wacko denizens of the street, but he also portrays how life for L.A. cops has changed in the last 20 years. The novel is both a celebration of street cops and an elegy for the old LAPD, now hobbled by post-Rodney King federal receivership, Draconian PC codes, oversight armies, and severe manpower and equipment shortages (Michael Connelly covers some of this same ground). The setting, Hollywood Station, also serves as a symbol for the collision of cops and criminals. For example, the stars on the Walk of Fame in front of Graumann's Chinese Theater are overrun by costumed cartoon characters who are actually addicts and whores; the stars in front of Hollywood Station are modeled after the stars on the Walk of Fame, but these stars contain the names of seven officers from Hollywood Station, all killed in the line of duty. The plot careens between cops and criminals, as seemingly random acts of desperation by a group of meth burnouts tie into a Russian criminal mastermind's scheme. Wambaugh Still Has The Stuff

The first installment of former LAPD sergeant Joseph Wambaugh's Hollywood quartet franchise, "Hollywood Station," is a good, ready, and entertaining read. People who live near the area that Wambaugh writes about probably appreciate the veracity of his writing because they can visit it any time that they want. Essentially, this is an ensemble novel that winds its way through a variety of policemen as they patrol the Tinseltown beat and encounter a number of criminals and street people. Everything concerns a mysterious jewelry store robbery where the assailants left a fake hand grenade between the store owner's legs and then scrammed with a small fortune stones. The Hollywood Station precinct is out to catch these dastards, and Wambaugh throws in several interesting characters, some sympathetic and others not so sympathetic. Wambaugh's prose and his ability to maintain momentum as he shifts from one episode to the next is still as good as ever. "Hollywood Station" reeks of atmosphere and the cops are amusing enough in their own right, especially the surfer dudes who always appear at the start of each Hollywood entry. Old cops adapt to the influx of new cops, particularly when they are women. The woes of being a cop and the toll that it takes is described with verve. All in all, although it is well written, nothing staggering occurs here like in "The New Centurions," but "Hollywood Station" is for the most part a solid read that you won't regret.

Gotta love Hollywood Station!!

Wow! Joseph Wambaugh is back!! I loved reading the Choirboys and The Onion Field and now he is back with another police story and what a story it is.

The characters in Hollywood Station are well written, believable characters. The life of meth addict or "tweaker" is nothing to be proud of and the things they do to get their next high is amazing. Mr. Wambaugh lets you into their sordid, pathetic lives with Farley and Olive. Very strong characters that will stay with you after you have read the last page.

The street cops and detective of Hollywood Station are hard core cops even when they first start out as a rookie.
The dialog between the officers and their partners is hilarious but so appropriate to their type of work. What we would find gross or unusual is just another day at work for them.

The only thing I found that kind of bogged down the book was the numerous stories of past call they cops were on. I thought there were too many of them and it got in the way of the story line to where you almost lost your way. But I did enjoy the stories, just too many of them. The story line is good but a bit meandering but it all comes together at the end. Hollywood Station is a book that I will be recommending others and I will be reading the rest in the series. Can't wait!

If you liked JW' s other LAPD fiction books you'll like this one too. Just enough updated police procedure, equipment, contemporary crime and LA politics to make the book authentic without bogging down the story. If you are looking for gritty true crime stories like The Onion Field, this is not that book. This is another comical farce populated by cops and played out against a backdrop of summer nights in Hollywood. Fortunately for the reader, nobody does that better than Wambaugh.

Wild Ride Through Hollywierd and More

Hollywood Station is a wild ride, a series of hard-hitting vignettes that move the reader through a story that is as much about a place as it is about the characters and plot. The plot ostensibly revolves around a pair of meth addicts (Farley and Olive) who steal mail and sell the proceeds to upper level criminals. One of those criminals is an Armenian with a Russian lover/prostitute who goes on to commit a couple of armed robberies. These two sets characters go about their business all the while another several sets of cops are patrolling and trying to solve crimes and maintain order. Accomplishing their sworn duty is not easy for the cops of Hollywood Station. They have their own hang-ups which range from hypochondria to a penchant for the movie business, not to mention Federal oversight that scrutinizes their every move. Dealing with the bums, crazies, want-to-be's, and outright evil is messy work and it shows up here in heartbreaking ways with a bit of humor dropped in to make it a little easier to understand. Wambaugh draws all these characters as real people, each incident ringing true even if it is outrageous. He portrays Hollywood as it is, alternately weird, comical, and tragic. The building tension, authentic tone, and excellent pacing give this book the feel of an extend conversation with the people involved. See my video review for more details. I look forward to reading more in this series by Wambaugh who clearly deserves all the praise he gets. Hollywood Station is the first book by Joseph Wambaugh that I've read and what a pleasant surprise.
