One of the biggest upsets in World Series history

The Baltimore Orioles sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1966 World Series is one of the biggest upsets in baseball history.

Author Tom Adelman tells the story of how the Orioles and Dodgers got to the series and the short-lived series itself.

The Dodgers, with a rotation of Sandy Koufax (27-9, 1.73 ERA), Don Drysdale, Claude Osteen and Don Sutton, were heavily favored over the young Orioles, led by Triple Crown winner Frank Robinson (.316 BA, 122 RBI, 49 HR). The Dodgers staff ERA was the lowest in the National League in 23 years.

Adelman spends 48 pages recounting the O’s acquisition of Frank Robinson and their season, and 78 pages on Koufax and the Dodgers. To be fair, the Orioles wrapped up the pennant early and the Dodgers didn’t clinch until the final day of the season. Adelman recounts the World Series in 93 pages and provides a 14-page aftermath.

Because Koufax had pitched the final game of the season, he was unable to start the opener. Drysdale took his place, but the O’s beat him in the opener. They scored three runs in the top of the first inning, more than the Dodgers scored the entire four-game series.

Koufax lost Game 2 to Jim Palmer, while centerfielder Willie Davis made three errors in one inning and the Dodgers combined for a total of six errors.

The 1966 World Series was one of the best pitched series in history. The O’s staff finished with a 0.50 ERA. They held the Dodgers to a record 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Although the Orioles only batted .200 in the series, the Dodgers were held to an anemic .142.

Much of the Orioles success was attributed to super scout Jim Russon’s report on the Dodgers and a deep, overlooked bullpen, as well as solid starting pitching.

Interestingly, although Koufax lost his only start of the 1966 World Series and the Dodgers were swept in four straight, Koufax appears on the cover of the book. Why not a photo of Jim Palmer, who became the youngest pitcher in World Series history or World Series MVP Frank Robinson? In all likelihood, it was a marketing decision by the publisher in an effort to sell more books on the West Coast.

Adelman does a fine job of recounting the 1966 season and the World Series, revealing the personalities of some of the stars and uncovering interesting nuggets of information.

The title is one mouthful. Being from Baltimore I was expecting a good read about my favorite baseball team and one I grew up watching and listening to. It is a shame the book was written by someone not at all familiar with Baltimore or one would assume baseball for that matter. Continually refering to "Jack Robinson" in the book instead of the name we all know him by as Jackie Robinson was an unbelievable gaff. Then calling Baltimore the capital of Maryland over and over again. Couple these with the other errors that pop out to anyone that lived through the 1966 season and lived in Baltimore and you gotta wonder about the research that actually went into this book and who was responsible at Little John for proofing it. One has to assume that the behind the scenes facts and the interviews were accurate but were they? I guess we will never know until someone writes another book about the 1966 season so that we can compare them. I enjoyed the book for the memories that it rekindled for me about the 1966 baseball season and the personalities on the Orioles team and those in Baltimore. The read for me was a nostalgic trip down memory lane for one that lived through it.

If you want to read a great Baltimore sports book, pick up a copy of Johnny U, The Life and Times of John Unitas by Tom Callahan. It will bring a tear to a true "Baltimoreon!"
