Minas has a son, Eric, a week younger than Tommy, and the four, along with enigmatic Vietnamese nanny Ahn, soon form a loving ménage. Following Branwyn's sudden death 50 pages later, Tommy, now six, is plunged into a hardscrabble life when his difficult father, Elton, claims him; he grows up without resentment, talking aloud to Branwyn when he's sad or confused (and sometimes to Elton's on-again, off-again partner, May), but ends up on the streets. Eric, meanwhile, sails through childhood and adolescence, but remains alienated, constantly missing "his brother," even having a child at 16 with Christine, who's a few years older. Critics generally agree that Mosley succeeds in this genre; darkness, concise writing, compassion, social criticism, and questions about which son is "fortunate" resound loudly. Only the New York Times faulted Mosley for his stereotypical characters, predictability, and lack of tension. Fortunate Son is a break from Mosley's detective narrative, and it is a well-developed, tale exposing the disparities within our society on a racial, social, and economic level. Mosley's characters reveal the common thread that brings us all together. His depiction of the "mother" figure who is African American and poor allows for analysis of the house slave and the "family" dynamic. Two nurtured in the same home, separated when the mother is no longer alive, destined to two very different struggles and lives. The biggest coup of this novel may be the humanity of the "unfortunate" son and the depth and intricacy of his character. When one could have simply focused on survival, Lucky speaks up for Black men who remain alive in the face of extreme adversity... and love ferociously.

NOT THE TYPICAL MOSELY MYSTERY (IF THERE IS SUCH A THING), BUT A STORY OF TWO YOUNG MEN AND DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT THEIR LIVES WERE, YET THERE BROTHERHOOD REMAINED. AND MOST OF ALL IT'S QUITE BELIEVABLE AND BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN. JUST WHEN I THINK I'VE ENJOYED HIS BEST, MR. MOSELY SURPRISES ME AGAIN. I'M HOOKED.

Different voice for Mosley

I'm a big fan of Walter Mosley's detective novels and have read them all. In Fortunate Son, he writes in a different voice entirely. There is more than a bit of the metaphysical in this book as well as destiny and fate. Beyond that, I would have trouble describing it. At some points it brought tears to my eyes, jaded as I am.

This was my first time reading Walter Mosley and I have to say that i was very impressed by it being such a quick read and i found myself not wanting to put it down. The characters and story line really made you think how our own personal situations are never as bad as we think. There is good in any situation if you are just willing to look for it. This book would make an excellent disney or halmark movie minus the somewhat unnecessary sex. But thumbs up anyway Mr Mosely. Great summer read.

This book broke my heart. I found my self getting mad, sad, laughing and having my own desires for the lives of the people in the book. It is a book where you have to be willing to live with the people and care about them and I loved that.

I choose this book after reading Potlomey Grey (which is another awesome book by Mosley)and I was not disappointed. Two books in a row by the same author and being able to love reading both of them is a rarity these days. I am glad to see that among so much riff raff and chaff that Mosley continues to deliver solid works.
