Talut, a powerful bear of a man with bright red hair, a booming laugh, and a gentle heart, and his tall, dark-haired sister, Tulie, are the leaders of the Lion Camp of the Mamutoi. It is here that Ayla finds her first women friends, but some among the Mamutoi dislike Ayla because she was raised by "flatheads," their name for the people of the Clan. Ayla is haunted by her memories of the Clan because Rydag, a child of mixed parentage living with the Mamutoi, bears so strong a resemblance to her own son, Durc.
It is the Mamutoi master carver of ivory dark-skinned Ranec, flirtatious, artistic, magnetic -- who fascinates Ayla. She finds herself drawn to him. Because of her uncanny control over animals, her healing skills, and the magic firestone she discovered, Ayla is adopted into the Mammoth Hearth by Mamut, the ancient shaman of the Great Earth Mother.
Ayla finds herself torn between her strong feelings for Ranec and her powerful love for the wildly jealous and unsure Jondalar. It is not until after the great mammoth hunt, when Ayla's life is threatened, that a fateful decision is made.
Set in the challenging terrain of Ice Age Europe that millions of Jean M. Auel readers have come to treasure, The Mammoth Hunters is an epic novel of love, knowledge, jealousy, and hard choices -- a novel certain to garner Jean M. Auel even greater acclaim as a master storyteller of the dawn of humanity.

Don't give up on this great series. Finally, I always believed that this novel and "Clan" should be taught in high school. That's the liberal mind in me. Bear in mind however, that most high school district school boards would be aghast to allow the openness of how life was back then for the major characters with or without the sex scenes. But it should be read, at least this book and "Clan." It's okay with three stars, but could have been better with quality editing.
The weaknesses of the book are many, unfortunately. Primarily, the book is repetitive. Too many details of ice-age flora and fauna, too many endless sex scenes, and we have to AGAIN skim through detailed descriptions of flint-knapping. All of these things were written almost word-for-word in the previous two novels. Another major issues is that Ayla and Jondalar, though supposedly almost super-human in abilities, and are super-compatible, and super-hot, have trouble communicating with each other. This is the big source of conflict in this book and it wears thin quickly. The "misunderstanding" between these two should have been resolved in a 30 second conversation with each other, but is spread out amongst the length of the novel. Also...Jondalar is kind of a jerk, wanting Ayla to the point of possessiveness, but ashamed of her history and unwilling to be with her. This is understandable and human, but the author keeps going on about how awesome Jondalar is in all things, so the pettiness of his actions don't match with how the author has set him up. Ayla is supposed to be preternaturally good at understanding people since she grew up with a society that communicated mostly with body language. She supposedly can always detect lies for example. However she cannot understand simple things in others, particularly Jondalar, to the point of idiocy sometimes.
The way the Others think of the Clan (or Flatheads) also comes into play in this novel. The Others hate Flatheads and consider them repulsive animals, yet since Ayla was raised by them and had a mixed child, conflict is bound to happen. This is sometimes handled well and sometimes not by Auel, who struggles with some elements of novel-writing. Her characters and story are too simplistic and cannot support some of the deeper themes that are brought up. The book ends up feeling like an after-school special about racism set in the ice-age times.
Anyways, if you are a fan of this series, this book is worth reading and overall enjoyable. I would recommend stopping here as the next three books are almost unreadable. In particular, the last two were seemingly schlepped out to meet contractual obligations as they add nothing to the story. All plot and buildup established in the first three books disappears and they turn into even more repetitive descriptions of ice-age life, more silly misunderstandings between Ayla and Jondalar, and no resolution on the fate of Ayla's son Durc or the clan she left behind. However, Ayla does retain the ability to cook Ptarmigan like Creb liked it throughout the series, and can tell the ingredients of all teas just by smelling them!

Ayla and Jondalar together with the horses Whinny and Racer continue their Journey to Jondalar`s home. They meet the Mammoth hunters led by Talut and send time with them.
A good read.
