Book overview

Look Out for the Little Guy is the in-movie memoir by Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man, that he’s written and shared with the world, as seen onscreen in the new Marvel Studios film Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Hyperion Avenue is proud to bring this book to real life.

This is the incredible story of an ex-con turned world-saving Super Hero.

In
Look Out for the Little Guy, Scott Lang shares with the world a bracingly honest account of his struggles and triumphs, from serving time to being a divorced dad to becoming Ant-Man and joining The Avengers.

These are stories of epic battles won and lost, as this everyman turned Super Hero finally tells all—from the official account of what really happened between The Avengers and Thanos to how shrinking down to ant-size really feels to the challenges of balancing the roles of hero and dad.

Across his many adventures big and small, Scott has gathered the wisdom of countless amazing experiences into this, the first memoir from a real-life Avenger. Once you learn the unforgettable details of his epic journey, you won't need to be reminded . . . to look out for the little guy.

“Introduces the man behind the hero, and the hero I call friend.” —Bruce Banner, fellow Avenger

We see the hero that Scott Lang truly is.

So, Scott Lang - Ant-Man has gone from being my favorite superhero (aside, of course, for Spider-Man. Let’s face it, Arachnid Boy is EVERYONE’S favorite hero. So, he really shouldn’t even be on the list, we just pick those other guys aside from him. There are those who will tell you that he’s not their favorite hero, but they’re lying… But I digress..) to being my favorite author.

This book was like getting a personal letter from a beloved, dear friend. Except, in this case, the dear friend is a world renowned superhero who literally has no idea that I exist.

But beside that…

His candor is remarkable.

Chapter One sets the tone of why he was asked to write the book, why he agreed to, and the flutter of emotions that followed. And he sets the tone with some really solid advice.

At the end of chapter one, he says, and I quote;

…Because my life just like yours - loses half its value if we don’t find a way to share its lessons with others.
…what makes all of us giants is how much we look out for the little guy. How we help out our fellow Humans when they need it most. How our greatest super-power can simply be a listening ear, a concerned eye, or an outstretched hand.

So, that sets the tone of what’s to follow.

In Chapter Two he discusses how he’s had to start over several times in his life.

Again, I quote;
…quoting the old cliche, When life gives you lemons, make lemonade…forget the lemons. Life has already given you a you that’s like no other. And that’s what you’re better off making stuff out of.

The next several chapters explain his missed time with his daughter. How he dealt with prison, house arrest and a ex wife.

We get a first person perspective on the final battle with Thanos, but sadly, he didn’t reveal how he shrunk down, went up Thanos’ butt and became Giant-Man to end (see what I did there) him.

He also speaks about how each of us can look out for the little guy. We have a voice, and we have kindness, and we use it to help others. If you see somebody wearing a cool T-shirt, tell him how nice it is, that tells them that you recognize them and you see them.

He tells you how you don’t need a suit or aliens tech, or imbued powers to be a superhero.

If you help someone who is in need when they’re being harassed by another person, just stopping them on the tracks by telling them what they’re doing isn’t cool, shows them that you are on their victims side, and now their ‘victim’ is twice as big

And many other ways that you can be the hero.

This book is not what I expected.

It was so much more!

This book has a LOT of solid life advice.

Because after you read this, you’ll have a changed mindset and be more proactive in “Looking out for the little guy”

It’s been a rough ride, I’m not gonna lie. Half the world has the same tale: they were doing something and then in the blink of an eye it’s five years later. Lots of people were lucky, like they came back when Dr. Banner snapped his fingers and found themselves in the same chair, or in bed, or at a desk.

I’ve heard countless “reappearance” stories. They can all recall what it was like to come back. I don’t. I was running late to class (before the snap or blip or whatever, I was a film student at Metropolitan University) and I was crossing the street when Thanos snapped his fingers. I was in the same crosswalk five years later, but “WALK” became “DONT WALK,” and the driver of a royal blue t-top Trans-Am couldn’t hit the brakes in time when I reappeared and barreled through me at around 45mph. One second I’m walking, then sleeping the next.

That’s what my doctor told me four months later after I awoke from my coma. I don’t remember anything, and they’re like, “Hey, Rick, it’s totally ok you can’t remember the accident, that’s just the brain’s response to something traumatic.”

It’s been a slow return… and I’ve had to get used to this new life. My on-again-off-again girlfriend, Alyssa, moved on three years ago and got engaged to my neighbor. :-/

I’m having these weird dreams, now. Every time I sleep, in walks this tall, big-eyed blue-skinned guy in a purple hood lurking around in my dreams. He’s always there. Doesn’t matter what I’m dreaming, he’s there. Lurking. He scares the hell out of me, but there’s also something … I dunno, reassuring about him?

Anyhow, this book… I had to pick it up. Finally someone from inside the Avengers who was THERE at the battle of upstate New York … but it’s Ant-Man? His overwhelming positivity is a little too much, considering what so many of us went through. It’s a nice little recap of some pretty magnificent events - but it reads a little insensitive to half of the universe’s population, many of whom have lost houses, families, loved ones, and time…

That said… Scott’s a hero. Without him, I would still be dust. And yeah, I’m still recovering (I took 50 steps all on my own this morning without the crutches), and these new nightmares with this blue guy, but I’m so grateful for the Avengers.

As a big Marvel fan, I thought it was pretty cool that there was actually a published version of the memoir that Ant-Man promoted in the opening of the movie "Quantumania." So I bought it with high expectations. It didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I enjoyed it anyway on the whole.

Pros:
- The ghostwriter does a good job writing in Scott Lang's voice. It really does sound like him.
- Most of the advice is actually good advice!
- There are fun callbacks to a lot of movie scenes (e.g., the airport battle in Civil War).
- There's a thought-provoking chapter where Scott suggests to Hank a lot of cool uses for Pym Particles.

Cons:

- It's written more as an inspiration / self-help book than a memoir. Because there's only so much inspiration that Ant-Man can give, it gets repetitive after a few chapters. I would have preferred more backstory on Scott's life, more of a through-line, and more challenging or controversial ideas (instead of a non-stop parade of feel-good sayings). The end result was too sweet, like eating a bowl of Froot Loops.

- Because the book seemed determined not to go beyond existing canon, what little storyline there was ended up feeling limited and recycled. I already know what happened in Infinity War and Endgame, so the rehash wasn't too exciting. I learned a few new things - such as the fact that Scott was sad when Luis's van got destroyed in the big battle with Thanos (I never thought of that battle from the van's point of view), but apart from very minor insights like these, it was the same old same old.

Anyway, I mildly enjoyed it overall, but I didn't find it a page-turner. It was on my nightstand for months and I read a few pages each week. Spoiler alert: it is not possible to give spoilers for this book, because it's not a book where anything happens. So it didn't matter if I had forgotten the previous chapter by the time I read the next one.

That said, if Ant-Man is doing a book tour, I will DEFINITELY go and get my copy signed by him. He is one of my favorite Avengers! But he might not want to quit his protecting-the-universe day job to write books.

Lot of words that don't say much. I was kind of hoping for a backstory of the main character and how he got where he was. Failing that, I hoped for a little more about the other characters that appeared. Alas it has none of that. It was like they limited the writer to only talk about events in the movie and the character's sanguine and slightly saccharine philosophy of life. It's nice but it's the same thing throughout the entire book. I really wanted to like this, and it isn't as though they didn't years and years of comic background information to draw from, but instead it was heartbreakingly boring. It will be something to sit on the shelf, not anything I'll read again.
