Great book but out of date.

This book is for those who wish to design networks at the router level. If you aren't designing networks, you may find this book not quite as useful. The Cisco Internetwork Operating System is out of date but most of the commands in the book still work but newers IOS will have a terminal wizard now that will setup up most things in the book much easier.
By the way, I am a network administrator.

Good intro to what it the cover states

I enjoyed the content of this book. I must stress that it is an intro to networking with Tcp/IP. It is rather vague in details on quite a few subjects in the CISCO arena. I was a little dissapointed with it's delivery of IP subnetting. I was looking for more of a detailed description relating down to the binary or hexadecimal values. Overall, I think it is a good book to start off with and to gather the terminologies from. It does give brief descriptions of many of these but doesn't exert details with many. If you are the person looking for an intro into CISCO routers dealing with an IP point of view, this book is for you.

Enjoyable casual reading style is excellent

Although Scott, and the editors, exhibit a syle that is excellent for the novice readers, sometimes the technical side is a bit needy. Figures 1-2 and 1-3 blew our entire class away. The point should have been made with /20 as the subnet mask for third octet host id's in the range of 8+4+2+1(i.e., one through fifteen in third octet).Proof through positive example is better than negative non-working examples on the first time through. Additionally, any reader of "Managing IP Networks" who takes the time to read the appendix probably would not be confused in to thinking "twisted pair" is maybe not "copper". All in all, excellent reading for the networking student.

Cet ouvrage (en anglais) a le mérite de prendre pour point de départ le métier de l'administrateur réseau, des choix qu'il doit faire et des problèmes pratiques qu'il rencontre, plutôt que de se focaliser sur les détails techniques ou la théorie, comme la plupart de ses concurrents.

Le sous-titre est trompeur : les routeurs CISCO ne sont utilisés que pour les quelques exemples de commandes de configuration, mais le livre est dans l'ensemble très impartial quant aux différents fabricants de routeurs. À la limite, on pourrait très bien utiliser cet ouvrage pour monter un réseau à base d'ordinateurs sous Linux comme routeurs.

Le livre a un tout petit peu vieilli sur certains points (il ne mentionne pas le wifi ni le courant porteur de ligne, par exemple), mais c'est peu gênant. Il me semble qu'il y a aussi de petites erreurs (par exemple, je crois me souvenir qu'on peut faire de la répartition de charge avec du routage statique sur un cisco, alors que le livre laisse entendre que ce n'est pas possible), mais je peux me tromper, et même si j'ai raison c'est de toute façon sur des points de détail.

Dans l'ensemble, un très bon ouvrage porté par la grande expérience métier de son auteur.
