Donovan's poetic, well-crafted third novel, like his debut, Schopenhauer's Telescope, shows how violence can infect and take over a person's life. Julius Winsome has retreated with his old dog, Hobbes, to a remote family cabin in the northern Maine woods. "Many men live in these woods who cannot live anywhere else," he tells us. "They live alone and are tuned close to any offense you might give them." Winsome has some physical skills (he's an excellent shot with his grandfather's WWI Enfield rifle), but mostly he spends the long winters reading from his father's library of 3,282 classic books neatly arranged around the cabin walls. Only once did a chance for love and companionship brush him; it will return to haunt him as his frightening and touching story unfolds. Winsome's descent into anger, sadness, perhaps madness, begins when a deer hunter deliberately kills Hobbes. From that moment, Winsome's need for revenge grows rapidly and irrationally. The title character, living alone in the north Maine woods in the cabin his late father built and stocked with leather-bound first editions, gradually discovers the killer inside him after someone blasts his canine companion with a shotgun at point-blank range. A woman from the nearest hamlet once contrived to start a romance with the middle-aged Julius but fled after discovering the emotional troubles lurking beneath his well-read, soft-spoken exterior. With dawning horror and sadness, readers, too, come to realize how disturbed Julius is as he begins to stalk random hunters and employs fragmented, if poetic, logic to dope out which one of them murdered his dog. As he puts it in one of his increasingly rare lucid moments, "I didn't have feeling where I should and too much where I shouldn't. You keep away from men like me and you'll be alright in life." A tale of love, madness, loneliness and revenge

The beautiful and unique story tells the tale of Julius Winsome, a 51 year old man who has lived his entire life in his cabin in the woods in northern Maine. His mother died giving birth to him and his father raised him - just the two of them - in that cabin.

Julius's father was an avid reader and the cabin is filled with hundreds and hundreds of books. The father was a quiet man and helped educate his son by by their discussions of the books and by having his son read Shakespeare and write down 3 new words every day, along with their meaning.

When the father died, Julius was left alone in the cabin, spending most of his time reading, especially during the cold winter months. His companion for the last 4 years has been a mixed terrier pit-bull named Hobbes, and when Hobbes is shot and killed at the very start of the book by some unknown person, gentle and animal-loving Julius starts to become unhinged and seeks one thing - revenge.

I don't want to give any more of the plot away than this because part of the enjoyment of this book is finding out what happens next when the author wants you to know this information. Just know that the book is told from the point of view of Julius and as such we really get a feel for what he is thinking and how he feels and are taken inside the mind of someone who may be falling apart.

One of the things I loved about this book is its beautiful prose and the writing is spare and evocative. Just perfect for a book describing the desolate but beautiful setting. Once I picked up the book I could not put it down, it was that good.

Highly recommended for those who love dogs (any animal really), Shakespeare aficionados, and tales of madness and revenge.

*note, if you have problems reading about animals in peril, I don't think you'll have a problem with this book. If anything, your love of animals will make you appreciate this book even more.

An extraordinary book if you can cope with grief and guilt

One of the most beautiful books I have read in years. It is about grief. So make of that what you will. It is about the anger, anguish, complex emotions that result from loss and grief. It can happen to humans for many reasons whether loss of a loved human or a loved animal. It is poetic, the prose is transporting in its poetry, but also confronting. It relentlessly engages you with rage. Anger. But also deep, deep sorrow. It's a personal journey so may not appeal to some because of its confronting emotions. But I can't wait for his next novel (currently in the making).
