The masterworks of one of the most influential teacher-artists of the twentieth century, originally published as a limited, boxed edition in 1963, was conceived as a guide and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students. A paperbound edition, containing the unabridged text of the original edition, plus ten representative color plates, chosen from the original silk-screen reproductions and printed by offset lithography, was published in 1971. Since those color plates have now been worn out in repeated reprintings, Mr. Albers has selected ten different color studies, with new comments, for this revised edition.

"The text of
Interaction of Color provides the careful reader with the content of Josef Albers’ famous color course. His teaching is based on learning by direct perception, and not by theories or color systems. There are many books on color on the market, but no one combines eyesight with such profound insight as Josef Albers does in Interaction of Color."—Hannes Beckmann

"The publication of this famous book in paperback is an event. . . . It is clearly written and easy to understand. . . . This book ought to be owned by any serious student or teacher, regardless of the kind of painting he does."—

When I was in an art class 20 years ago, our instructor did the book cover test to show us how much colors are affected by surrounding colors. I still have the piece of paper stashed inside the book to show that the two brown boxes on the cover are the same exact color. Nobody believes it when I ask if they're the same color. Lesson learned to be very careful with color.

Great condition, wrapped with care. Thanks!

This book is a delightful small version of Albers larger body of work. It is a great reference for those just starting color theory and for those who want a refresher. It is also a real mind bender and great way to stretch one's assumptions about color because of the exercises Albers sets up to show the reader/viewer that color truly is relative.

Not much pictures and color examples in the book, but many inspiring little assignments that keep you think the relationship between different colors. This edition is printed in good quality. However, there may be too much written/marking traces if you get a used one.

happy with everything

I made a mistake. I had a full digital version of Albers book, and I wanted a print copy. This functions as a minor text to that digital issue, but is not as fleshed out as I had hoped. If I want the full print version, I will have to shell out the big bucks to include the full text and color plates. It would be worth it though.

It ook a long time for the delivery, as it was forewarned. The book itself was in near perfect shape.

I brought this book for research into colour theory, for use at University. Actually being a computing student, looking for the first time at human interaction, this book really did open my eyes about how much there is to this subject. There are various DIY experiments explained in the book, but in my opinion, some of theories into how we interact with colour are far more interesting.
I would say that this is an interesting (although small) book, by any standards, and is certainly not just useful for studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book by a great artist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 17, 2014
I realised when I saw it that it was not really suitable for purpose for the person I was hoping to give it to.
But it would be an enviable book to possess for artist with special interests in colour

Good quality but could've done with more colour images to help explain the theories within
