A real eye opener!

One of my co-workers, who is an African-American male, and I often have great frank and open conversations about race relations in American. He recommended this book to me and I am so glad that he did! I am the fair skinned, blue eyed blond female so often referred to in this book. I didn't find any of the discussions about Americans with my same coloring offensive, I found it eye opening. I had no idea the amount of judgement that has been placed on African-Americans by African-Americans through history. I do have to disagree on two points about this book. Being a female, blue eyed blond is not at all what it's cracked up to be. Yes, I have gotten away with things because of my coloring, but at the same time have have been critically judged because of my coloring. Women of my coloring, especially if you are from the South, are often looked upon a stupid baby making machines. Not someone who can be taken seriously, especially in a professional environment. My second disagreement, the writer does not think that things have changed at all in the last 20 years. The next generation, who are in school now, have no memory of the past injustices that their grandparents experienced. I believe that our world is changing for the better and books like this one are paving the way to make people more aware of what is happening around them

This book should be required reading for AfricanAmerican middle school aged kids. So they can understand the under current of prejudice in the US and not use it against each other. There are enough people who use our color against us, we should embrace each other no matter what our place is on the color spectrum.

Shedding some much-needed light on a "forbidden" topic

I thank the writers of this book for airing this often painful topic, which has always lurked just beneath the surface like a festering boil that needs to be lanced. Since most of us have eyes, it cannot really be hidden that the human family, of whatever race, ethnicity, or combination thereof, comes in varying hues. Coming to terms with this issue is long overdue. Successfully dealing with this subject requires far more depth and honesty than mere slogans (i.e. "black and beautiful") can provide. Back in the sixties and seventies, I, as a light-skinned African-American women, sensed immediately upon entering a room filled with darker women, that "slogans" had not really changed anything. Genuine self-esteem cannot be artificially conferred. This issue needed more probing exploration.

Perspective on this book please

The book was written in the 90s when the concept of self image in the African American community was still in its infancy, however, it speaks to some truths about who we are, how we see ourselves and how we are seen by those looking in.

Some of the commentary is a bit dated, but the archival research is fascinating and informative. People not comfortable in their own skin will NOT like this book; it speaks to the reflection in all of our mirrors: be prepared to accept what you see.

I enjoyed it and have recommended it to others.
