Sowell's research is par none

This is the 2nd book within a trilogy. Within this book Sowell follows the history of the migratory patterns of several major world players, from Germans to overseas Chinese. A general consensus is reached and thoroughly proved. The basic thesis is that through hard work, thrift, & a willingness to live bellow their means (among others) minute minorities were able to thrive and prosper in vastly different landscapes around the entire globe, almost always without political power. This whole trilogy is a must read.

I'm something of a novice to Professor Sowell, and since some of this material seems somewhat dry, I tried to read it when rested and fresh. That said, it's very eye-opening in the way he dispels myths and shows that there really have been cultural differences, particularly among those that remain insular when they emigrate to another land. He treads fearlessly into politically sensitive areas, but with so much research, that whatever PC police would dare to attack would wither under the onslaught of his facts. The truth may hurt, but it can--and should--teach. Thank you, Professor.

As usual, Thomas Sowell looks at details about culture and migrations which are largely overlooked everywhere else. In a time when some want not only "equal opportunity" but "equal outcomes," Sowell points out why some groups from some places at some times have skills to succeed in areas others don't. This book, along with Race and Culture and Ethnic America, helps us understand that migrations of people have been happening for millenia over the whole world... not just the last two centuries to the Western Hemisphere.

Sowell , with his trilogy of books about culture, gave me greater perspective of how we all got to where we got than any other reading or History classes I have ever read or taken. The subject matter of his 3 books becomes a bit repetitive, but this adds to the emphasis and leaves you with a better understandings of yourself and the people around you.
