Another Roadside Attraction: A Novel Paperback – April 1, 1990
Purchase options and add-ons
“Written with a style and humor that haven’t been seen since Mark Twain.”—Los Angeles Times
What if the Second Coming didn’t quite come off as advertised? What if “the Corpse” on display in that funky roadside zoo is really who they say it is—what does that portend for the future of western civilization? And what if a young clairvoyant named Amanda reestablishes the flea circus as popular entertainment and fertility worship as the principal religious form of our high-tech age? Another Roadside Attraction answers those questions and a lot more. It tells us, for example, what the sixties were truly all about, not by reporting on the psychedelic decade but by recreating it, from the inside out. In the process, it is fully capable of simultaneously eating a literary hot dog and eroding the borders of the mind.
“Hard to put down because of the sheer brilliance and fun of the writing. The sentiments of Brautigan and the joyously compassionate omniscience of Fielding dance through the pages garbed colorfully in the language of Joyce.”—Rolling Stone

In the suitcase with the mystic unmentionables were pages and pages torn from a journal which John Paul Ziller had kept on one of his trips through Africa. Or was it India? The journal began thusly: "At midnight, the Arab boy brings me a bowl of white figs. His skin is very golden and I try it on for size. It doesn't keep out mosquitoes. Nor stars. The rodent of ecstasy sings by my bedside." And it goes on: "in the morning there are signs of magic everywhere. Some archaeologists from the British Museum discover a curse. The natives are restless. A maiden in a nearby village has been carried off by a rhinoceros. Unpopular pygmies gnaw at the foot of the enigma." That was the beginning of the journal. But not the beginning of this report.
Neither the FBI nor the CIA will positively identify the contents of the suitcase as the property of John Paul Ziller. But their reluctance to specify is either a bureaucratic formality or a tactical deceit. Who else but Ziller, for God's sake, wore jockey shorts made from the skins of tree frogs?
At any rate, let us not loiter in the arena of hot events. Despite the agents of crisis who dictate the drafting of this report, despite the spiraling zeitgeist that underscores its urgency, despite the worldwide moral structure that may hang in the balance, despite that, the writer of this document is no journalist, nor is he a scholar, and while he is quite aware of the potential historical importance of his words, still he is not likely to allow objectivity to nudge him off the pillar of his own perspective. And his perspective has its central focus, the enormity of public events notwithstanding, the girl: the girl, Amanda.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOh, Tom. You really know how to turn us upside down and all around. And smack us with something just so outrageously, out there funny with a most deliciously crafted word pie...No question why this book put you on the literary map. There's nothing quite like a Tom Robbins read. And what's so amazing is that you take what seems to be a random, hallucinogenic morsel and tie it into a larger drama. It's just such good stuff. We'll never have another time in our history like the 70's, but Tom's books will preserve all the best that was the crazy of that era.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2009Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIf your interested in liberalism, the hippie movement, free-love, wild ideas, and the like i would say read this book already! its an american classic. this is the first tom robbins book ive read but it makes me want to read his whole collection. its far fetched but at the same time it explores real topics that we as a people deal with day in and day out. for instance the clash between science and religion.. one of the most entertaining books ive read.. so enough about the praise - you can see that i loved it... now for the cons.. hmm yea there were none except that it had to end. Enjoy it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRobbins writes so well, it was difficult putting this fun & thought-provoking book down. He narrates an improbable, yet possible scenario of a small group made of 4 people, one being an infant, a babboon, live butterflies, and dead butterflies displayed, and a flea circus with fleas that have names and unique personalities. This novel made me laugh and really think about My life, not To take myself too seriously...I got a lot our great feelings and fun, reading "Another Roadside Attraction: A Novel" by Tom Robbins.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI read this book years ago, right after I read Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and loved it. Tom Robbins ability to weave together social and political issues into an incredibly humorous and thought provoking science fiction format ranks him as one of my favorite authors. I love his off the wall sense of humor that frequently illicits up front and out loud laughter when I am reading one of his boooks, With the exception of his last two books, I have read them all and it is difficult to qualify one of them as my favorite although Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Jitterbug Perfume and Skinny Legs and All come to mind as ones that I hated to see end. I purchased this copy of Another Roadside Attraction as a gift for my son and hope that he will enjoy it as muc as I did when I first read it. If not, I will read it again myself.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSome wonderfully poetical passages but I found the characters overly simplified and stereotypical. Definitely needed an editor. I stuck through the long speeches of Marx because I was assured the end was worth it. I didn't feel it was.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMost of the book happens in Washington state, so rain helps. I read this book as a teen. It hasn't aged as well as I have, but it's still am entertaining read. Robbins's style may take a bit of getting used to, of this is your first encounter. I find Jitterbug Perfume to be a better first book for those who haven't met the author yet.
The main premise of the book is The Second Coming. Yes. Of that guy. And it all happens at a Roadside Attraction Hot Dog Stand. The thing is, He is dead. Always has been. And the Vatican can't afford to have that leak. There's also a baboon. But most importantly, there's Amanda.

Ever yearned to visit America's Pacific Northwest? Then I highly recommend Tom Robbins' debut novel which does a fantastic job of conjuring the atmosphere and feel of Skagit Valley and its environs. Stunningly inventive language tinged with Robbins' signature style of psychedelic surrealism, his similes and metaphors are consistently mind-bending, exotic, erotic and witty. But, for me, there is also an aching, heartfelt quality to this writing which reveals Robbins' deep love for this particular landscape with its lush, dark forest greens and charmingly perpetual, drizzly rain. And, of course, MUSHROOMS! Plenty of mushrooms!
By concentrating the story to one principal location with four main characters, this novel has a marvellously focused, almost theatrical edge, which helps Robbins build memorable characters with convincing back stories. There's beautifully organic development as Amanda and John Paul establish their new home by the highway, setting up their insect zoo and diner attracting charmingly goofy oddballs by the dozen. The novel's remarkable conclusion also lives up to the bracing subtitles: 'An Apocalyptic Entertainment!' and 'A Metaphysical Suspense!'
For me, this astonishingly accomplished debut novel easily rates as highly as 'Skinny Legs & All' and 'Jitterbug Perfume'. Read Tom Robbins and feel the warm balloon of your brain jelly inflate to delicious, helium heights of happiness.
