There are five stories, spanning 30 years, in these pages. They originally appeared on my website, WIL WHEATON DOT NET.

I liked them so much, I intended to include them in Just A Geek, but they didn't fit. So they get to live here, with some wonderful illustrations to keep them company.

Some of them are funny, one is very sad, one is pretty damn sentimental, but they are all true. I wrote them shortly after my 30th birthday, as I looked to my past in an attempt to understand my present, and not fear my future.

I gave birth to this book when I wrote it. By reading it, you give it life. Take good care of my babies. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Good Read, I would buy it again!

I am a Star Trek fan and love the Westley Crusher character so when I found out Wil Wheaton was an author I wanted to read his books to hopefully get to know him a little as a person. I grew up not swearing which I know is very unusual so the swearing in this book especially the F* word was hard for me to read but I know the majority of people out there swear so I try and get past it. Besides the swearing, Wil Wheaton's Dancing Barefoot was very touching and heartwarming. He seems like a real family man and he went through a lot of grief being an actor on Star Trek which troubles me. I have never been to a convention or met anyone from the show but to hear the awful comments people made to Wil at the conventions was really horrible. I think Wil Wheaton is a great actor and I am so happy he met a wonderful woman to marry with great kids! I plan on reading all of his books! These stories in Dancing Barefoot really touch your heart. I will be keeping my book to read again someday.

Excellent; very personal

Honestly I had already read his book Just A Geek, so I was a little familiar with some of the stories featured in this book. However, that did not distract from the enjoyment of this book at all. Wil is an excellent writer, and both of his books leave you feeling like you know him on a very personal level. I was never a Star Trek fan, I just took a chance on Just A Geek since I'm familiar with who Wil Wheaton is and I'm ever so gad I did. Dancing Barefoot is a wonderful demonstration of his excellent writing skills. Honestly, I'm actually considering going to a Con sometime, just to meet him because of these books! I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a book of thoughtfully written and emotional short stories. This book was better than I had believed it would be.

A Monkey Chiming In

I found out about this book, Dancing Barefoot, and the next book, Just a Geek, from Wil's website, which I found surfing one day. After cruising through the blogs on the site, I was instantly hooked. I joined his forum almost immediately (hence the Monkey in the title... *waves* Hi Guys!!!) and was pulled into that as quickly as the books. The fans that surround him are as funny, as open, as "real" as the man himself.

Wil's writing is engaging (yes, I know, bad pun), witty, honest, and at times, bitterly poignant. Though it's hard to relate to the life of an actor and the ups and downs that go with it, Wil found a way to draw people in to his life and to explain those pains, pangs and associated temporary joys in such a way that I ended up spending most of my time nodding and muttering, "been there, Wil, I know that feeling".

I found myself sucked into the stories - weeping with him over Aunt Val, watching the kids play in the front yard and stepping into the Time Warp of youth, sitting at a booth in the surreal surroundings of Vegas and even more surreal moments known as a Star Trek Con. In a way, it became less a book and more a conversation with someone I grew up with, a mirror to look at my own life in a different perspective.

The stories aren't about anything *that* exciting, and you won't hear a lot of great "on set" gossip from the TNG days, but they are a peek into what it's like to be a Gen Xer - stuck between childhood and adult responsibility, watching our beloved relatives pass, our children grow up, worrying about bills and relationships, looking back at what we've accomplished (or not accomplished), the self-doubt, and finally, that settling in to realize that we actually *like* the person that's looking back from the mirror.

Granted, a lot, if not all of the material can be found on the website if you look hard enough, but it's cool to have it in a bound form. I was willing to pay the $$ just for that. (The drawings were fun too!)

It's a fast read. I think I sat down and finished DB in about an hour. I couldn't put it down.

Say what you will about Wes Crusher, but this Wil Wheaton kid can WRITE!

Bravo Wil!! Keep 'em coming...

I ordered thislast week and it came in yesterday. It's a short book, based on 5 of his favorite blog entries. I picked it up after work last night and put it down sometime around 11. And immediately wanted to pick it up again. The first story is about losing his Aunt Val and the cathartic cleaning out of her house. It brought tears to my eyes and I felt like I got punched in the stomach when it was through. The second story was about playing hide and seek with his stepsons on a warm summer night. I wanted to wake my kids and hug them after that one. The third story, "Inferno", really captures teenage angst at it's best. The fourth, "We Close Our Eyes" is a love story written to his wife - a wife who wants to play in the rain with him. The imagery is beautiful, and his love shines through every word. The final story, and it takes up half the book, is titled "SpongeBob VegasPants" and I laughed so damn hard I had to get up and use the bathroom. It was all about his experience at Star Trek conventions with the fans - good and bad, and what it meant to him growing up "Trek". This story alone is worth buying the book for, especially when you read his pet name for William Shatner.

I bought this because I thought it might be some good, frivolous reading (after all, I check in on his blog a few times a month). I got so much more out of this. He's really, really found his stride in writing, and now I want to go to his blogsite and read all the archives.

like reading stories told by an old friend...

I found this book lurking on my bookshelf. I bought it back in 2004 when I was an avid follower of Wil Wheaton's blog. I enjoy reading Wil's blog and books because we are the same age and from the same era. I can picture exactly what he is talking about when he talks about the good ole days.

My favorite story is not about Star Trek, but the first story in the collection titled "Houses in Motion". He was able to write a very touching story about an ordinary task of picking up an old piece of furniture. If the walls of that old house could talk, Wil could tell you what they were saying.

If you need a light read and need something to make you smile, pick up this paperback and share it with your friends.
