Amazon.com Review

Hobbits and wizards and Sauron--oh, my! Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elvish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

1.0 out of 5 stars Not like the picture
By Client d'Amazon on September 19, 2018
For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful lord of the rings book set!
By Mancy on March 16, 2019
This lord of the rings book set is beautiful! The books are small, and the covers of the books are firm but bendy, which will be great for taking on the go, and they have a soft, smooth, leathery feel to them. The box they come in is the same soft, leather type feeling and very sturdy. The pages are VERY thin, it's almost like the pages of a christian bible but the pages are soft with a paper like feel and not shiny like they are in a bible. The text is VERY VERY small but you can definitely still read them pretty easily maybe not for too long tho, my eyes did get tired after the first chapter from straining to read the small text which is just wrong on so many levels cause I WANT TO KEEP READING LOL!!! This is the first time I'm reading the LOTR series and I'm so already captured by the flow of the story and the detail that went into creating this wonderful world! Thank you J. R. R. Tolkien!!! From someone who is new to this series this is the complete book set. The first is The Hobbit then the next three books is actually considered only one book: The Lord Of The Rings, and this is supposed to be the sequel to The Hobbit from what I have gathered. LOTR was broken up into three books due an apparent paper shortage in the 50's when the books came out, each book of the last three here actually contains 2 books inside: The Fellowship of the Ring with book 1-the ring sets out and book 2-the ring goes south, The Two Towers with book 3-the treason of isengard and book 4-the ring goes east and last The Return of the King with book 5-the war of the ring and book 6-the end of the third age. On that note this is definitely a deluxe feeling set and worth the almost $30 dollars I paid! GREAT price for what you get!

5.0 out of 5 stars A most beautiful edition in every way!
By Ralph Hunt Sidway on February 28, 2019
I just received my Hobbit/LOTR Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set, and it is one of the finest, most handsome editions of any kind I have ever owned.

The 'Leatherette' description for the covers of the books and the cut-away display box made it sound like a faux leather material, but the rich leather fragrance reveals its fine quality the instant one punctures the shrink wrap, and the tactile experience of holding and opening the books harkens back to bygone days.

The embossed titles are superb, exceeded only by the gold leaf titling on the box, with the distinctive JRRT design embossed on the sides as well.

The durable Smyth-sewn binding guarantees these books to open easily and be a pleasure to read, and the paper is a decent weight, more stout that that of similar size leather bound pocket Bibles, with a similar-size font.

These volumes are meant to be treasured and appreciated, read again and again, and handed down from generation to generation (if the Lord doesn't return first!). So glad I ordered this, and it is inspiring me to revisit Middle Earth through Tolkien's own telling for the first time in many years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Addition
By Yaaj on November 18, 2019
Beautiful set. I am an avid reader and this collection looks wonderful on my shelf. The print is tiny but isn't a problem for me since I still find it readable. I compared the print to a miniature psalm/proverbs book so that others looking to buy this set can get a visual representation of the print size. The binding is thick and the overall feel of the book and pages feel nice and sturdy. I am happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars My preciousss!!!
Reviewed in Brazil on July 6, 2017

3.0 out of 5 stars Review:the hobbit and the lord of the rings(paperback).

Let me tell you first , the series is a flawless masterpiece indeed . It cannot be described much , so just read it! Now on to the bad role played by amazon , the packaging was , damn careless .. Yup you read it right and i typed it right .. Careless.. The box was torn and bent and the cover of the books were spoilt ( i am very particular about my books , like even a small fold / bend in the book , you will wish you never met me ..) but the pages were ATLEAST safe ! The paper quality isn't soo good neither soo bad ; you know it is just , OK. Not a really worthy buy , but the content makes up , so i would give three stars . The box 's width could have been increased atleast a couple of milimeters so that we can place the books back.. And the other annoying thing is that only in this bookset tolkien's original cover design is well .. the cover design ..But packaging usually depends on your luck ... So I hope you get a nice set , not a torn one like mine! PS- hope this review helped you ! Check out the photos !Have a good day ! ~ yours truly , dragonwizard (amazon + flipkart reviewer )

5.0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful edition Ever!! ♥️
Reviewed in India on March 16, 2019
The box-set came on time and in a perfect condition!
I've been eyeing this particular edition for some months now. .. finally when price reduced to 1921, I bought.
*The books are so well bound and leatherette! It's extremely beautiful.
*Though keep in mind they are pretty small, almost the size of my palm(I've attached a photo for better understanding) and the print is also small but readable (photo attached).
*All the Tolkien fans ,you need have this atleast as part of your collectables !! It's extremely beautiful! Can't stop raving about it !😍😍♥️♥️

5.0 out of 5 stars Books are small, feel nice and look good

Bought this version as I don't like it when paperback books crease and wear out over time and hardback books cost a bit more. They are somewhat small which I like and they look great due to their colours. The text on the Hobbit is big enough but the other 3 have a smaller text size (still readable for me). Mine came with no damage on any areas of the holder or books. Overall, it was a good purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite Remarkable...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2017
I am writing this review because I myself had questions... Firstly i haven't read it fully yet so I will have to update this when I have, but as far as 'everything else goes it's very good size, I was a little concerned as it looked small on the site and also the writing seemed to be a headache but once I started reading it it was brought to my attention that the writing is not to close together therefore it is easier to read and also it is quite a decent size, some people I showed the book to thought it could do with some reading glasses but generally it's ok, the books are very light, open quite flat and beautifully covered, a piece of art. One thing I also like is that they include the maps, and about 5 pictures are throughout the book of good size, (black and white) overall wonderful, I can't wait to read them and then update this post..

Btw I did get that frequently talked about mark at the front of the holder due to the shrink wrap :(
