A most unusual book. Much of it is written with the language of someone who has learned just enough English for basic communication incorporating many incorrectly used words. If the subject matter wasn't so serious it would be funny. Chapters take place in the late 18th century, WWII and recent times. A young American author, Safran, goes to Europe in search of his roots.Nineteenth century Eastern European culture, conflicts with modern American and is juxtaposed with the details and aftermath of the Holocaust. It takes most of the book before we get to the Holocaust. I found it awkward and tedious to read. If this kind of writing is not a problem and you would enjoy it then try it. If you are interested in the events surrounding the Holocaust and that time I would recommend The Nightingale, The Storyteller, Once We Were Brothers and All The Light We Cannot See. All outstanding and all from different perspectives.

This book was recommended to me but I found out later it was because this book was so highly praised by an english prof. As someone who is a close reader and has with an advanced degree in literature, I was sorely disappointed. I definitely see the talent and the energy in this book, but what appears to me as an immaturish approach to sex and love and life took away from the talented writing. Also, although I can appreciate the writer's avant garde style and structure, that alone does not make for a brilliant book. Nor does wittiness and this book was plenty witty, but at the service of wit itself and not at probing the depths of either the plot or characters. There were wonderful aphorisms about love - but these again, were more listed than explored. Exceptt for the translator, the characters were predictable, and two-dimensionsal. I have a bias against nihilistic books and this is definitely nihilistic. However, I don't want to discourage this author who has immense talent. Perhaps if the years add wisdom, understanding, and compassion for life, I will find his books worth reading.

I must confess that I saw the movie (starring Elijah Wood) adaptation of this book before I read it. After I returned from living two years in Russia, I went back and rewatched it and decided that I might give the book a shot. Overall, the book is better than the movie. Everything is Illuminated is a touching, quirky and interesting book. I especially loved the depiction of Eastern Europe. Although told in broad, caricature-like strokes, Foer’s depiction of the oddities of Eastern European life and the bafflement of Americans when facing it reminded me of a few encounters I had in Russia. Foer’s description of Ukraine is evocative and touching, but the book really shines in the human elements. I was especially drawn to the stories of the historic Jews living in Ukraine and was touched by Foer’s emotion filled description of their hardships. Overall, the pure emotional weight of the book was its greatest part. The story itself was a little contrived and Foer is a little too clever for his own good, but he sure knows how to make readers feel something and for that I thoroughly enjoyed Everything Is Illuminated.

I do not see the need to spend half, or a third, of a book translating it from a form of pigeon English to English. To me the Author is simply showing off how clever he is. I stopped reading and looked upt the plot summary and other reviews and cannot, for the life of me, see that the book is worth the ordeal of plugging through. I didn't.

I gave it an extra star because the Author isn't a terrible writer, obviously many people like his style and this book.

This is a very beautifully written book about the relationship between a young Jewish man from New York who is searching for his ethnic roots in the Ukraine and a Ukrainian youth who is a little younger who becomes his interpreter. The former goes by the same name as the author, the latter is called Alex (like his father and grandfather, who both figure in the story). One of the Jonathan's ancestors survived the Holocaust so the search deals with how he did so. All that Jonathan has is the name of the shtetl and the picture of a woman named Augustine. The first part of the book is very humorous because it is narrated in the very imperfect English of Alex. Alex's narration is layered between stories written by Jonathan about life in the village of his ancestors. It is hard to actually enjoy books that deal with the Holocaust, and this novel is no exception. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth reading.

As others may have mentioned, some sections of the book are written in broken english, so if you are a stickler for grammar, you might want to pass. Likewise, you may want to look elsewhere if you have prudish tendencies, as some parts can get quite vulgar. You will, however, be missing out on a pleasant (-ly surprising, at least for me), engaging story. I hate spoilers, so I won't go into detail regarding the plot, but I can tell you that I found myself reading this book at every free moment, and had a difficult time putting it down. It's been some time since I've become so engrossed in a book.

Everything is Illuminated builds from the utter hilarity of its opening to the most serious of consequences of the actions of man by the conclusion. It is a coming of age and enlightenment story on many levels and for many characters, artfully intertwined and well executed, and certainly not always without darkness, but ultimately uplifting in its affirmation of the spirit of man in the face of difficulties neither expected nor necessarily deserved. The novel reads through multiple narrations across time and although is sometimes difficult to follow, ultimately coheres into a most moving whole. Highly recommended as a starteringly original debut which can be rewardsing to the sensitive reader.
