Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School - For this edition, three of the original essays were removed and four new ones added. Many others have been updated, making the book even more pertinent and timely, notably with Michael Levine's contribution on the nation's drug war and Jane Akre's account of her legal battle with Rupert Murdoch over the broadcast of her story on Monsanto's bovine hormone. Each of the new chapters documents how journalists have experienced increased censorship in the aftermath of September 11th: Dan Rather speaks frankly of the pressure to report "friendly" news or risk being labeled unpatriotic; Charles Reina, formerly of Fox News, reveals the existence of "The Memo," a daily Bush-era e-mail "addressing what stories [would] be covered" and how; and MSNBC reporter Ashleigh Banfield relates how her candid, extemporaneous personal observations on media coverage of the Middle East (given in a lecture at Kansas State University) drew the ire of corporate executives. Most disturbing is Charlotte Dennett's analysis of how the media "missed the context" between the Bush administration's war on terror and "the Great Game for oil." In her new introduction, Borjesson notes that the current state of American journalism makes it even more important that the work of investigative journalists and media critics be unreservedly and widely disseminated. As before, Buzzsawprovides a vital perspective on the First Amendment right to a free press and its endangered status today. - Dori DeSpain, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

Review

"This book should be read by everyone who cares about the truth. The stories make for spellbinding reading as we learn about the trials of investigative reporting, but they also are a potent reminder that in times such as these, we need our "muckrakers" more than ever.”

South Florida Sun Sentinel

“Pertinent and timely. . . . Provides a vital perspective on the First Amendment right to a free press and its endangered status today.”

—School Library Journal

"If members of the general public read this book, they will be appalled... timely and essential reading.”

—Publishers Weekly

"All these pieces are interesting, and a couple are fascinating...some of this material is alarming."

—New York Review of Books

"Searing accounts of…personal battles with the pressures of censorship. The writing is, as might be expected, riveting. . .this book is recommended.”

—Quill & Scroll

"The first edition of this book appeared during the early months of the Bush administrations' war on terror. Since then, the climate for investigative journalism has only become more repressive. This updated edition...adds about 80 pages of new material...Highly recommended."

—Library Journal

This is the second time I purchased this book. I had to give away the first one, but this book is so important that I had to purchase a replacement. When I listen to or read from the mainstream media, I automatically turn on the switch that says I am listening to propaganda, because that is all they are. There maybe some truth in there, but they are simply there to add a modicum of truth to the pile high of lies to make it a bit believable. Mainstream press exists to manipulate the unawakened. This book is good for the unawakened to read. This will give you a jolt of reality. The reality that you presume to exist is not. And the NOT reverberates as in the Borat "NOT"! The book will make you realize there is no such war against drugs because our very own government is running the drug industry and the proceeds are used by them to fund all the black ops. There may be a war against some isolated dealers here and there to make naive people continue believing the charade, or they may want to bust competitors getting too big that they are taking too much from their source of profit. The book will make you realize that truth-tellers are routinely silenced via murder or "suicided".....with two bullets to the head or by being run over accidentally "twice!". I read an average of 65-70 books a year, that when I start reading a book, I can usually tell if it is going to be BS or otherwise, after the first few pages. If you think the CIA and the military is protecting your freedom by killing millions, if you think the FDA and the USDA are your protectors, if you think the American Cancer Society is operating with utmost integrity, still searching for the very illusive cancer cure, if you think there is no such thing as mind control and if you think the NWO is a fallacy, do not read this book.....because it just may change your mind. On the other hand, if you want more mind-blowing information, go to the website "Project Camelot" and read the whistle-blower interviews it has managed to compile over the years. Start with the three-part interview of Dr. Pete Peterson, Dr. Arthur Newman, John Lear, and Jordan Maxwell. These are people with nothing to gain by coming out with their revelations. They, in fact, expose themselves to retaliation from the sinister cabal, and it does not exclude bodily harm and murder. I quickly learned to add to my vocabulary the word "suicided". I had no idea there was such a thing when I was new to all of these.

This book is really an important work if you want to get an insiders perspective of how the media distorts, limits and ignores news for business and political purposes. If you don't believe that the media is influenced by money, power and sometimes corruption then get this book, a highlighter and study it. It will rock your world.
It contains many stories of how the important and pertinent truth of the behind the scenes stories are suppressed, ignored and distorted. It is a disturbing expose' of the news media. I have always been a flag waving republican who defended "the American Way" when confronted by nut-cases who tried to tell me that our government and media were not being totally honest and completely forthright with me. My eyes however have recently been slowly opening to the truth of that, so I decided to get this book. It was more troubling than I expected. For instance I thought FOX News was one of the very few good-guys left trying to do what "the main stream media" refuses to do. After reading Jane Akre's story of how she, as an investigative reporter, took on Monsanto on their "hormone" rBGH given to cows to make them "milking machines" and what happened to her, I am more disappointed in FOX than I can say. She, and the other authors in this book are very brave people. And I would say, are among the few that still have some integrity left in the news world. That is not to say that the rest of the news organizations are not called out, they are.
That being said, I do not necessarily agree with all of their conclusions or perspectives but I do not question their honesty. The selection of the stories in this book does come across to me to be in the greater part, an anti-republican perspective. The instances seem to focus on the political world of the republican administrations. That is not to say that there is bias or any slant in the stories themselves just that I am sure that there are just as many instances of deliberate misconduct in both political environments.
I still stubbornly hope that through these kinds of informative books, the truth will win out and America will wake up and demand honest leadership in our media and politicians. We should value those that speak truth to power and I believe that most Americans still do. The stories in this book demonstrate that hope springs eternal because I sense that the authors are telling their stories because they still, after all of their difficulties, believe in our country, the first amendment of our constitution and continue to hope that liberty and truth will somehow prevail...against all odds.

While this did download to kindle. It is still
very annoying that Amazon sells many titles for Kindle, only to find out that they either won't download to the kindle (but maybe the computer app) or they are not readable with voice view.

In 2022, I read "Into the Buzzsaw," from 2002, and this book has barely aged. America does NOT have a "free press" and these (mostly) brilliant essays lay out what should be required reading for high school students. I was one of those suckers who paid for a subscription to the propaganda rag "New York Times" for two decades. If only I had known about this book and that the "journalism" in that rag was censored propaganda. In the 20 years, there has been a shift in journalism, especially in terms of social media and online consumption, but the "tricks of the trade" have remained the same. None of my teachers taught me how to read "the news" - and this book does. It's timeless.

Although the book is over ten years old, it still contains very relevant information for today. In this world of fake news, it is really refreshing to read solid, very, very, well researched and referenced writing by brilliant and honest journalists. They reveal the work they did and how it was prevented from being published or quietly disappeared. There are strong resemblances to stories today which do not reach the MSM.

Greg Pallast's revelation of the voter fraud committed in 2000 which disenfranchised enough African American Florida votes to give the election to Bush is a case in point. It was a precursor for the work he is doing today on voter list fraud in the 2016 election and its development today into the Asian American community.which will effect 2018 and 2020 elections in the US.
