Biblical Hebrew Reference Grammar (Biblical Languages: Hebrew) (English and Hebrew Edition) 1st Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

This work is intended to serve as a user-friendly and up-to-date source of information on the morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics of Biblical Hebrew verbs, nouns and other word classes (prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, modal words, negatives, focus particles, discourse markers, interrogatives and interjections). It also contains one of the most elaborate treatments of Biblical Hebrew word order yet published in a grammar. This reference grammar will be of service to students who have completed an introductory or intermediate course in Biblical Hebrew, and also to more advanced scholars seeking to take advantage of traditional and recent descriptions of the language that go beyond the basic morphology of Biblical Hebrew.

One of the best grammar books I have owned. Was recommended by our Hebrew professor and as I can see it was just a great recommendation.

This Hebrew grammar is a helpful tool for first any student of Biblical Hebrew, but it is really designed for graduate level work. Originally, this grammar was to be the third book in a three part Hebrew grammar series, but the other two books were never finished. For the first year student, Van der Merwe provides helpful breakdowns of each tense and their corresponding vowels. This is particularly helpful when the student encounters weak verbs and the later stems. For the graduate level student, Van der Merwe offers a concise guide to syntax, verbs, nouns, and many other important parts of speech for grasping and using Biblical Hebrew in the exegetical process. Van der Merwe also offers a short introduction to the hebrew language and its formation. The only drawback to this volume is the vernacular Van der Merwe uses. It can be frustrating and confusing for the first time student, and hard to follow for students who previously used Pratico and VanPelt. Overall, This book is a great resource to own and a helpful supplement to Pratico and Vanpelt.

Perhaps the best, most useful, and definitely most linguistically up to date reference grammar. Merwe, Naude, Kroeze blends detail with brevity which makes it superior for everyday Hebrew reference. This is contrast for when you need to turn to GKC for that grammatical form that happens one time in the entire Hebrew Bible. I used this MNK in my Pocket Dictionary for the Study of Biblical Hebrew (IVP 2003) as one of the four main references for further study beyond my appreciated definitions.

This book was in great condition and arrived on time. It has greatly helped me with my studies of the Old Testament in Hebrew. I would recommend this book to any who have had at least one semester of Hebrew and want to continue with their studies.

This is an excellent little handbook for students, and it would work well as a textbook for a Hebrew course, or a supplement to a textbook. It's easy to find what you're looking for, and it doesn't bog you down with a lot of unnecessary details. It's also very up to date and takes into consideration the latest research on the language.
