*Starred Review* Classics professor Hanson is also, like generations of his family before him, a fruit farmer in California's central valley. He has employed immigrants, seen them flood his community during the last 30 years of mass flight from Mexico, and endured the crime associated with illegal immigrants. Hanson is immensely sympathetic to poor Mexicans, however, and the most powerful chapter here outlines the harried life of the illegal alien. But he hates to see the ordered culture in which he grew up drowned by an alien inundation whose undeserving beneficiaries are Mexico's kleptocratic rulers, for whom an open border is a safety valve expelling the potential for democratic change. The four solutions to the mess that Hanson enumerates include continuing de facto open borders but insisting on rapid acculturation; patrolling the border effectively and reducing legal immigration; imposing "sweeping restrictions on immigration" and ending Mexican chauvinism in the U.S.; and allowing present policies to make California increasingly mirror an unreformed Mexico. Hanson thinks that the U.S. "still need not do everything right" to prevent social collapse in the Southwest and that the totalitarian uniformity of valueless mass culture may soften that collapse. He also sees very clearly what has brought this crisis on: the American globalist ideology's lust for cheap labor and emphasis on "raw inclusiveness" instead of "standards and taste." Ray Olson

A Must-Read Book

The author tells it like it is and pulls no punches in terms of the effects of immigrants--both legal and illegal--on the way of life in California. He grew up in the Central Valley of California and lived in an area with a large Hispanic population. The attitude of some of these immigrants seems at times to be entitlement. We're here, so take care of us now. The author is quite intelligent and persuasive in his arguments warning that at the rate that things are changing in California due to the large influx of Mexicans that some day the state will become "Mexifornia". It is a great read and provides insight into the problems from an individual who has the background and experience to bring a credible account of this experiment underway.

Both Sides of the Problem

The book is well written and what impressed me the most is that the whole immigration problem is looked at from the perspective of the aliens as well as the existing residents of California. According to the author, one of the biggest problems we currently face with illegal immigration is the refusal of nearly all of the immigrants to assimilate to the American way.

I'll leave you with one small section of one of the last chapters in the book to give you a glimpse of the contents:

"If Mexico had not been contiguous to the United States, if migration had only come in the thousands, not the millions, if self-proclaimed advocates on campus and in the media had been honest and responsible folk, and if this had remained an America of the melting pot rather than the separatist culture of the 1980s and 1990s, then, I think, we would have fewer problems with race, culture, and immigration. But that is a lot of ifs."

Too bad the gang-of-eight senators currently working on immigration reform don't take the time to read this book and understand the contents.

Well written. Well thought out and with plenty of personal references to nail down the changes that are occurring in California by not only legal but illegal immigration. Although the book is now a decade behind, it is right on and should be required reading for every California legislator and member of congress. Whether the state or the nation can do anything to stop this influx is unknown at this moment by the electorate, but reproduction rates and the use of social services are not unknown. This nation must find a way that is humane, socially responsible, and yet adheres to the laws of our land.

I loved this book. Even though it was written about a decade ago, it is very relevant now. Mr. Hanson gives info relating to the issues involving the main players in his book. He doesn't just preach from his own perspective. He seems pretty open minded and gives suggestions for solving some of the problems faced by California and the U.S. Unfortunately, they have gone unheeded over the past decade.

I sure appreciated this little book. The author is a college professor in California who is also a rancher. He gives the reader an excellent look at how illegal immigration is impacting the United States. He knows first hand how theft affects him as a rancher, and it is more than a nuisance. It's bad in Arizona where people have to worry about their homes and belongings when they leave home due to the unprecedented levels of break ins and theft occurring there. I wanted to understand the situation that illegal immigration is causing because I want to move to Arizona, and this book tells it like it is, including how it is significantly impacting society, our safety, our welfare system, the cost to us as taxpayers, and employment opportunity. Is it really right to make babies born of parents who are not American citizens American citizens just because they happened to be born here? I think not. They grow up somewhere else in the world without benefit of Americanization and claim citizenship when it serves them. It's good that colleges across the nation are using this book in their classrooms. It's easy to read and full of eye opening facts.

This book provides a great explanation of a state legislature in the name of diversity, corruption from corporate dollars, and for the purpose of votes destroys all that was good about California. This book gets into details of everyday life and how it has morphed into the culture of another one in the San Joaquin Valley. It is not the fault of the immigrants. It is the fault of Federal and state governments allowing it to happen. The hypocrisy of groups like La Raza is very well explained and revealed.
