Anton Corbijn: U2&i Hardcover – April 25, 2005

4.8 out of 5 stars 58 ratings

For more than three decades Anton Corbijn has photographed the greatest artists in the music world and beyond. That made him one of the most influential portrait photographers of our days. In Corbijn’s career, however, there has been one constant: the band U2, and their collaboration of 22 years. His most recent publication—number seven in the line of Corbijn books published by Schirmer/Mosel—is dedicated to Bono, Edge, Larry, and Adam, to their longstanding friendship, mutual inspiration, and shared experience of rock history that is part of the history of photography. It was Anton Corbijn who "invented" U2’s public image and he is still shaping it. The long way from their first encounter in February 1982 in New Orleans to their April 2004 Lisbon shooting for the most recent U2 album is documented in a wealth of private and so-called official pictures with hand-written annotations by the photographer.

Thick, heavy, full of historic photograpy of U2. It was overwhelming to read this book the first time, as the images were beyond my expectations. Everything I thought it could be pictured, was indeed and more, so much more. Anton's work makes me think of him as the more important collaborator of the band, right beside Lillywhite, Eno, Lanois and Averill. Every home should have one copy. To me, this book, along U2byU2 and Stealing Hearts In a travelling Show, are the basic U2 bibliography. NOTE 1: Beware! this book is heavy as hell, probably it causes you to pay custom taxes if you're not in the USA. I had to pay close to $25 USD at local postal office to pick it up since mailman couldn't carry it to deliver at home...but believe me, it would be worth every cent you pay for this treasure. And NOTE 2: Please, use gloves, when read the book, high quality paper was used, but due to the high amount of black and white photography shown in the book, soiled or greasy fingertips could mark the pages!

This beautifully published book shows the expert eye of Anton Corbijn and his photography that takes a mere foto to artistic levels. His object this time, his friends of U2. The portraits show the band over the course of 20 years, evolving, growing, becoming more extravagant in their appearance (which according to Corbijn was his suggestion to begin with) and going back to their real core: a great band, both in music and in appearance. Corbijn added much to their image and the portraits of U2 did much for his fame. The friendship between both is noticeable and the (witty) texts speak for themselves. The portraits with the band members and their fathers is wonderful and very touching.

I recommend this book for everybody interested in the photography of Corbijn and his view on U2.

U2 & I is an amazing read (although Anton's handwriting takes a bit getting used to at first). I have been a U2 fan for over twenty years now and have read many books, magazines, and newpaper articles about the band. This book is a refreshing look at the band through someone's eyes who has shown the world U2 from almost the beginning. Many photos we have seen previously, but there are some rare jewels. As an avid U2 collector the book is invaluable, for those not so avid, it is still an interesting read and the pictures would be worth the price alone.

The iconic photos in this book are an essential addition to any U2 fans collection. It's great to see other shots taken in the same session as the well known images that have graced the magazines and album covers over the years. Best of all are the explanations behind the shots and the honesty that comes across from the photographer and the band.

Gorgeous book, very good quality and TONS of beautiful photos that trace the band's creative relationship with Corbjin. The large size helps the reader lose themselves in the images and the stories behind them. You will emerge feeling as if you have just been on tour or vacation with U2.
