It's easy to forget the sheer freight of Vangelis's 1975 recording, Heaven and Hell. Released five years before his infamous score for the film Chariots of Fire, Heaven and Hell is a symphonic suite for orchestra and chorus; only the orchestra is all Vangelis, playing an array of electronic keyboards and percussion, joined by the English Chamber Choir.

It's a magnificent work, both bombastic and serene, part Carl Orff, part Bach, but rich with that indefinable, spatial moodiness that's trademark Vangelis. The choir calls out to the heavens, synthesizers spin in counterpoint to tuned percussion, and timpani and cymbals crash on the shores of Vangelis's electronic orchestra. The second movement begins in pure abstraction before leaping into a joyous Asian-inspired section of rippling koto and plucked synth timbres and chimes. While the title suite makes up more than 40 minutes, the album's still best known for Vangelis's delicate if overly sentimental duet with Yes singer Jon Anderson on "So Long Ago, So Clear." Twenty years on, Vangelis can still move heaven, hell, earth, and your stereo system. --John Diliberto

Forceful and full of impact!

Circa 1979--I was assigned to find music to accompany some 9th grade presentation. We were told to find music that evoked emotion. We were digging through a collection of vinyl looking for something, what, we weren't exactly sure.

We started listening to this record and it darned near knocked us over! The almost Gregorian opening and chant-like melody grabbed us immediately. I was deeply involved in music at the time and I remember thinking "It's wonderful. I don't like it, but it's wonderful." I wanted the structure of truly classical music. But for some reason the album haunted me and stuck in my memory.

Several years later I rediscovered Heaven & Hell and gave it a more thorough listening. It has been one of my favorite recordings from that time forward. Some of the more delicate passages were plucked for use in "Cosmos" the ground breaking mini-series by Carl Sagan.

Vangelis was about 10 years into his career when he made this album and about 4 from winning an Oscar for his "Chariots of Fire" soundtrack. In my opinion, this is the keystone work in his library. As a concept piece, Heaven & Hell successfully evokes emotions in the listener. Good, bad, beautiful, ugly, happy, and sad. It's all here and is impressive in its scope.

Want to go on a strange ride?

Wow - is this album weird! Vangelis really does some magnificently foreign stuff here. The music is full of mystery and action. It's only two tracks but they're about 15/20 minutes each. Great to shut off the lights and take for a ride...unless you are creeped out easily by otherworldly music. The melodies in the first track can be a little jarring at times (which I love) and really take you places you're sure not to have gone before. I had no idea that Jon Anderson would pop up for the last few minutes of it either!! What a shocking surprise that was...together Anderson and Vangelis muse a segment which Yes fans may associate with the 'Soon' segment of 'The Gates of Delirium'... from the 'Relayer' album. Don't expect the 'Blade Runner' score or 'Chariots of Fire'...but do expect nuances of both! Listeners can enjoy truly trademark elements of late 70's and 80's period Vangelis. All the instrumentation and succinct melodic horse sense that the composers best work wreaks of. But not for the light listener or Vangelis newbies. If you like strange, alien sounding stuff this is for you. And Yes fans. ;)

A Remaster Disaster!

This review pertains to the Remastered Edition from Esoteric Records, not the original album from RCA. First, let me say, Vangelis is my #1 favorite composer of all time. I own 28 of his albums and listen to them more often than any other artist / composer. Since Heaven and Hell is near the top of my list of favorites, I decided to spend the extra money to get this remastered edition.

Unfortunately, it reminds me of remasters from the 1990's, in which studios would take an existing album, apply some sort of echo or reverb effect, label it "remastered" and enjoy a whole new round of sales for a marked up price. Most remastered albums I've bought in the last few years have been huge improvements over their originals. It's amazing the rich texture that can be extracted from a 16-bit 44.1kbps stream. So my excitement turned immediately to a rude shock to realize that someone would make a remaster like this in 2014. But what is even more sad is the damage it causes to one of Vangelis' greatest works of art ever. People who don't know Vangelis will buy this version because remastered is usually better than not. But the "echo" effect pervades the _entire album_ and, in my opinion, totally ruins it.

Remastering should be an act of preservation, not modification. I'm keeping my original RCA version, and I will not be buying any of the other remasters made by Esoteric. I even went into my music drawer to look at all my Vangelis albums, only to find that my copy of "Odes" and "Rapsodies" are also remasters, but are from Polydor. I never noticed any issues with those but I'm going to pay attention next time I listen to those, but

I finally got this one on CD. It is broken up into 2 incredible movements. And, right in between, like a bridge, is a very moving piece that features Jon Anderson. This is one of his best vocal performances and that's saying a lot considering his monumental work with Yes. It really makes you hope that Jon and Vangelis work again in the future. And, it also makes you hope that the Squire/ Yes establishment gets Anderson back where he belongs in Yes.

this review of this particular album is really about the sound quality of this cd. western copies were, and still are abysmal,leaving the whole production sounding flat.this japanese copy, on the other hand, restores beautifully the full grandeur of the original sound recording making this a must for all vangelis fans and in particular, fans of this amazing and over the top album!also it,s a cheaper alternative to the recently announced Shm recording, provided of course, that you can still find any copies left!these japanese items have a nasty habit of disappearing quickly. Superb sounding stuff!
