The title track from Curtis Mayfield's New World Order is also included on the soundtrack for Spike Lee's film about the Million Man March, Get on the Bus. Mayfield proclaims sweat is rolling down the Statue of Liberty's brow because she's worried that "the sleeping giant" of racism and classism "is no longer sleeping." Similar calls to action are issued by such political rappers as Guru and a Tribe Called Quest. The album's highlight is a powerful version of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" by Stevie Wonder. Though hip-hop and R&B dominate the album, two of the best cuts are gospel numbers. Kirk Franklin's "My Life Is in Your Hands" is religious, but the Neville Brothers' "Over a Million Strong" makes the connection between gospel music and political justice as the Civil Rights movement once did in the '60s. --Geoffrey Himes

'get on the bus' tells an affecting story of black men on their way to attend the million man march in 1995.

the soundtrack, which is all male, parallels that story effectively. it is a great way to hear the many elements that make up black music, including call and response, chant, rap, and silken vocals from curtis mayfield and d'angelo.

it is a fine and fun soundtrack!

Firstly, while I can understand the disappointment of my fellow reviewers with reference to the omission of the Michael Jackson song, I do wish that they had taken the time to review the songs on offer on this soundtrack to one of Spike Lee's more under stated films. There is much on offer here to meet the needs of any music lover. On the hip hop front, A Tribe Call Quest bring it their on conscious offering 'The Remedy', which, as far as I know isn't available on any other CD. GURU & Dougie fresh seem to be going through the motions on their cuts (Destiny Is Calling, & Tonight's the Nite) but then I've never been the biggest fan of either artist. One of the highlights of the soundtrack is an excellent cover of the Eddie Kendrick 1971 hit' Girl You Need a Change of Mind, by D'Angelo which is worth the purchase of the CD alone. Stevie Wonder also brings a unique interpretation on the Bob Marley hit' Redemption song'. Other highlights include the late great Curtis Mayfield singing 'New World order', which was the title track from his last CD, Blackstreet with lovely mid-tempo offering' Coming home', and my personal favourite, form the unsung Marc Dorsey, 'Welcome back', which hints at what this artist has to offer ( Crave being his one and only offering, as I speak, which I found disappointing) All in all a good varied CD.

some good tracks, some throwaway

Well, I never saw the film so I can't join the rank of disgruntled MJ fans out there. But I saw this CD in the sale bin of a local shop and a few tracks on here interested me, so I took the chance on the rest of the soundtrack. It's sort of what I expected; a hit and miss mix of tunes. The best ones, in my opinion, are the "old school" offerings from Curtis Mayfield, the Neville Brothers, and Stevie Wonder (doing a nice Bob Marley tune). I also love D'Angelo's cover of the old Eddie Kendricks song "Girl You Need a Change of Mind." That alone, is almost worth getting this CD. A track by Marvin Davis, "I Love My Woman," is also quite nice. But other tracks, some with rap and hip-hop elements, from the likes of Doug E. Fresh, Guru, BlackStreet, and A Tribe Called Quest sound boring and dated to me. If you can get this CD for cheap, go for it. A handful of very good songs on here.

A Fantastic Soundtrack (that's missing a Classic)!

This really is a great soundtrack that does not have many, if ANY, weak tracks on it. However, as the other reviewers have noted, it is missing the Michael Jackson song "On the Line" that so beautifully opened the movie (which is the ONLY reason my rating is 4 out of 5 and not a perfect 5). Sounds like there were very few of us who weren't touched, grabbed or mesmerized by this "new" MJ track when we first heard it at the film's beginning. Well, I've since read that Mr. Jackson did write it specifically for this movie but requested it be left off the soundtrack. Hmmmmmm... At least we got the smooooth Earth Wind & Fire track "Cruisin'" featuring Phillip Bailey's signature falsetto voice! This is indeed a 'you-and-your-significant-other' mood-setting song if I've ever heard one. Also, the Neville Brother's "Over a Million Strong" has a sing-along chorus that sinks a hook deep into your Groove Spot and won't let go. Leave it to the Brothers, who are the Founding FATHERS of NOLA funk, to write the perfect song for this film.

Btw, the only other place I've found that MJ track, "On the Line" is on disc 4 of his "Ultimate Collection". Maybe he was just saving it for this 4cd/1 dvd collection....?

Good tracks, but dissapointing for what it's not

A bunch of good tracks on this album. However, the movie opens with one of the best tracks that Michael Jackson has done in years. Beautiful! Well, it's not here - nowhere to be found. A shame, since it does such a good job setting the tone for the movie. Not sure what the title of the song is, but it would singlehandedly force me to give this album a five star rating. Oh, well!
