Product description

CD

Amazon.com

Sting's second and most conceptually dense solo album moved on from jazz to ideas picked up from Latin music. Even when he's not using Latin music's tricky polyrhythms, the melodies of the ballad "Be Still My Beating Heart" and the hit dance single "We'll Be Together" suggest he'd been listening to lots of salsa. If you can sting, you can cross-pollinate, too, and there are some other subtle hybrids here, notably the Gil Evans Orchestra's gliding arrangement of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" and the reggae-in-a-Cole Porter suit of "Englishman in New York." Of course, the former schoolteacher has some lyrical messages to deliver and the three songs that originally made up the second side of a double LP are a bitter meditation on Latin American politics and history. --Douglas Wolk

Very good?
I expected "Very Good" to be better than this. This picture is not very clear... but the case is covered with scratches and has a couple cracks. The disc has a several fine scratches. It seems to play ok but I think it may have skipped tracks. The music seems repetitive. I am disappointed and would not order again from this source.

I listened to this all through college. The songs and his voice is Haunting and Beautiful at times, it’s great to relax and study to, listen to his words. His rendition of
Jimi Hendrix “ little wing” is total magic
Please Enjoy

There are but two extraneous songs on this album: "The Lazarus Heart" and "The Secret Marriage". And "Lazarus heart" grows on you after a while, even. Other than those two, this album is a diamond mine of excellent music, done by what has to be the most professional solo artist to appear on the scene in the last quarter century.

Sting is a better lyricist than Paul McCartney, at least as good a tunesmith as Donovan, who he bares a strong aesthetic resemblance to, is intelligent, literate and probably just what Malcolm McDowell would be if he ever swallowed a couple of nice-nice pills and took up music! Herr Sumner takes some very diverse idioms, like Hora music, (on "Straight To My Heart",) a first person narrative, ("Englishman In New York",) storytelling, ("Rock Steady",) a mournful waltz, ("They Dance Alone", one of the most soulful songs on the album,) and Caribbean calypso mixed with standard funk, ("We'll Be Together Tonight",)a couple of classically sophisticated, M-O-R sounding tunes, (a staple of the fifties,) in "Sister Moon" and "Little Wing", and presents it all as a cohesive whole that holds your attention from beginning to end. A good selection of eighties' ascendent jazz musicians aid the former Police-man on this incredible late-80's album.

Considering that NO ONE has produced music as good as this or "Ten Summoner's Tales" in over 25 years, I hope Sting has 1) His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 2) Is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in a prominent spot and 3) Finally makes a good movie where he isn't playing a villain!

Why can't everybody be as good and have the high professional standards that Herr Sumner has and is, (at least in music, that is)?

Highly recommended!

You can honestly look at the legacy of musicians today that broke out on their own back in the 80's like George Michael & Phil Collins and hear just how amazing their songs still stand out so greatly. Which is surprising because mainly only one or two songs of their have each been overplayed on radio & no one listens to the bulk of their classic songs. To be truthfully honest, it makes those classics feel like they're mor afterthoughts. That sadly is more of the case with Sting. Considered 2022 was a big year for Sting, selling his catalog to Universal for $300 million dollars, but sadly no one plays his solo greats anymore & radio has only focused on his Police legacy by playing tracks like Roxanne & Every Breath You Take. But now, it feels more of a joy to take a look back at Sting's legacy & just celebrate the soulfulness Sting showed when he was thriving at the rise of his solo legacy. That showed with the 35th anniversary of one of Sting's more remarkable gems.

The deluxe edition of Sting's 1987 album Nothing Like The Sun is a pure joy to hear for the first time, as you hear a artist making the soul of his voice of his own. The album shows considered it was where Sting first saw the world without the crutch of The Police & being joyously enriched in at the dawn of his long-term relationship with his wife Trudie Styler. The songs have all ben remastered nicely & it shows in hearing the album & hearing the new tracks as well. The songs blend in nicely from intimate gems that still stand the test of time like the beautifully haunting Fragile, the underrated Sister Moon (which was covered later by Vanessa Williams in 1993,) the Jazz induced sounds of Englishman Of New York & Be Still My Beating Heart. Even hearing overlooked songs like The Police-soundalike History Will Teach Us Nothing & Little Wing which could've complimented She's Like The Wind from Dirty Dancing fits like a candle on a birthday cake nicely here. Every track does feel like a joy to listen to. Going back & hearing the sound on this album feels like a breath of forgotten air. The new tracks also work well that have never been heard before like the haunting epic sounds of Up From The Skies, which in some cases mirrors When The Angels Fall from The Soul Cages & the jazz instrumental host In The Strand that adds to the experiments close to the sounds of old school 80' bebop, to a B.B. King infused blues tribute. Each track feels like a new shape in time. Yet, I do honestly have only one major gripe & that is really with the remixes of Englishman In New York, Fragile & We'll Be Together. Truthfully, they take away some of the polish that makes this remaster so joyous to endure. I think instead the remastered album could've used live recordings instead to add into the spark o the flame that Sting highlights here so well. The other flaw with this remaster is that it is a only-digital release, which flows the trends Sting had 2 years ago when The Soul Cages was given a deluxe version that was digital only. The release would've absolutely benefited for having a physical release for posterity.

In any way that you do look at it, I absolutely do recommend the deluxe remastered Nothing Like The Sun from Sun by Sting. It really is a good album taking in for a sense of finding serenity in the shadows of a departure & rising for a new beginning sense of purpose. Each track is really worth enjoying from start to finish. While it isn't the first record I would turn to if you're new to Sting's solo legacy, that would be the 1994 compilation Fields Of Gold. It still is a record I would easily sink into from a real musical legend. I you're a hard core fa, than you're in for a treat with the deluxe edition of Nothing like The Sun.

This is my favorite Sting solo album and the one I still play a lot. The songs were recorded in 1987 in sessions that took place in Montserrat. The songs are excellent and Sting hired polished musicians. Branford Marsalis (sax) and Kenny Kirkland (keyboards) are retained from his previous record. The use of jazz players gives it a different feel to most rock albums. The drummer is Manu Katché who also became Peter Gabriel's favorite drummer at around this time. Katché had an unusual drum sound and was an in-demand session player in the 1980s and 1990s. He played on records by Robbie Robertson, Joni Mitchell, and Jeff Beck. He also had a parallel career in jazz on the ECM label and played with Jan Garbarek and Herbie Hancock.

My favorite track is the cover of Hendrix's Little Wing. It features a brilliant solo from Hiram Bullock, a New York session musician who was popular in the 1980s (eg, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Miles Davis, David Letterman). The arrangement is by Gil Evans, who worked with Miles Davis in the 1950s. For me, the 1980s was a bleak period in pop music, this album stands out because of the musicianship and the songwriting.

Lovely collection of soulful rock anthems from the supremely talented former Police-man. If you enjoyed this LP then I can thoroughly recommend the subsequent offerings 'The Soul Cages' and 'Ten Summoners Tales' which demonstrate Sting's superior bass/vocal talents.
