Really loved this movie, while not being a big fan of horror movies I found this one to be scary, but not in the sick and unrealistic way so many of them are. It is one that you could really see happen to some one and for me that makes it more terrifying. Will admit that I picked the movie because of the lead actor in the film Nickolaj Coster-Waldau. My husband is Danish and we lived in Denmark for a few years and love to watch the Scandinavian movies. In the watching of these movies I found him to be a very good actor who can take you from one movie to the next and you believe in each of his characters.

For people who are not big fans of foreign films you do not know what you are missing, reading the sub-titles do not in anyway take from the film and most times when it is remade in the US it is not as real or as dark as it should be with the glossy way we do so many of our films.

I started to watch the US version recently and had to stop. The attitudes of the 2 male characters were truly offensive. Josh Brolin's interpretation was slimy to the the nth degree, the scene with the prostitute in the restaurant was revolting. In the original version, this character has contempt for everyone and everything but, there is no nasty moronic frat boy element; he is simply empty inside. This version, the original stands apart as truly terrifying and the women are not empty headed Barbies. Interesting they both had the same writer/director.

Martin's a happy go lucky kid with a cute girlfriend and fun-loving friends. But when he takes a part-time job as nightwatchman in a hospital morgue, he suddenly finds himself beset with creepy visions and twisted desires. And to make things worse, someone is brutally murdering local prostitutes and Martin is the prime suspect. Although this film was remade (1998) in English with Nick Nolte and Patricia Arquette, "Nattevagten" is the real deal. A huge hit in Denmark and Europe. This is a classy, stylish and sinister exercise in horror. far superior to the American remake. Bonus material includes a self-deprecating, somewhat mordant commentary from writer-director Ole Bornedal. In Danish with optional English subtitles. From Anchor Bay, 1994.

With normal shipment, the DVD arrived in just a few day, in great condition and in an odd, thick DVD case.
There were no scratches on the DVD, and no flaws as it played great.

There were a few stickers inside and out. One that worried me was one asking the DVD be rewound before being returned to the rental place. Well, it was obvious the DVD was not rewound, and they shipped the used DVD without rewinding it first before shipping it to me. Just a shame.

Not that it is possible to rewind a DVD (unlike a tape, but this was a DVD case). They should not ask the impossible unless they plan to attempt it them selves.

Fast Shipping & Used DVD was in great condition, but not rewound before they ship to you. Highly recommended.

I always like finding foreign movies to watch that I want to watch, now that I have an all-region dvd player. Even though the movie was made into an American movie which I watched after watching this one, it seems the original version is always better. This being the case here as well.

There is no option for English subtitles. So unless you speak German or Danish, you are out of luck! Strange that the commentary track is in English. Beware!

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is excellent in this -- one of his first -- movies. The movie itself is filled with suspense. Terrific movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A roller coaster thriller!

If any of you have seen the English language re-make of this film which starred Ewan Mcgregor and Patricia Arquette and was also re-directed by the same person (Ole Bornedal) then you will love this Danish original. Yes you will have the subtitles but there is nothing better than appreciating the original version of any film whether you've watched the re-make first or after. Being that it is directed by the same guy there really is no difference in the plot, character build up and overall layout of the film. In fact pretty much scene for scene is exactly the same while the intense moments still hold out very well, if not better (this is the original remember). Now if you haven't seen any of these films then I suggest you do watch this first (in subtitles) then watch the re-make not long after (about a week). All I can say is that this a great high energy, fast paced murder mystery/ thriller and sometimes on acid. Characters you grow to love and even suspect (it's a murder mystery remember). There is also some surprises and quite gory scenes for those of you who want more than just 'who done it?' without a trace of blood. One particular scene is set in the morgue where our main character has to check out the rooms with a flashlight down a corridor and this is where the atmosphere and eeriness build in the film. It's really quite unsettling at times so lights out please when you see this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently executed... No pun intended.

Based around the hunt for a serial killer and a young man starting a new job as night watchman at a morgue, Nightwatch was an enjoyable thriller in the same vein as the now infamous Red Dragon.

It wasn't quite up to the level of Silence of the Lambs, but the acting was excellent, the film making and story telling superb, the script believable and the whole look and atmosphere of the film brilliant.

You really felt for the characters and it had you laughing and cringing in equal amounts (but never at the same time) and in all the right places. The main character's performance, especially, was just right for the role.

The main twist you will probably guess, but this doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film and I would thoroughly recommend it as an example of how things are done outside of Hollywood.

I'm giving this film 5 stars just because I really enjoyed lots about it. There are lots of better films out there, but for some reason I just really liked this film. I'm not sure why, I just did. I think it's because I found it quite quaint. Endearing, almost. Which is odd considering on of the main themes is necrophilia... Not sure what that says about me :-/

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 5, 2012
This was recommended to me by a friend, a recommendation based on our mutual love for Scandinavian film and TV and the excellent Sofie Grabol, star of The Killing who is a younger, prettier and blonde star of this.

It's just as well I knew of the film as the rather cheap looking DVD release I have from 'In2Film' misrepresents it greatly with these quotes; 'Before Saw and before Seven there was the classic Nightwatch' and 'Hostel meets Seven'

One can't help but wonder just how disappointed fans of gore and torture porn would actually be to find that this is a) a Danish film (it's not alluded to anywhere on the DVD) and b) as much a funny black comedy as it is a taut edge of the seat thriller.

A horror it isn't. In fact the film it puts me in mind of the most is Shallow Grave, which is ironic as one of the stars of that, Ewan McGregor, went on to star in the Hollywood remake of this very film. Like Shallow Grave Nightwatch features, on the surface, largely obnoxious, immature and unlikeable lead characters Martin and Jens played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Kim Bodnia (The Bridge) respectively. They really are rather irritating and certainly their girlfriends played by Sofie and Lotte Anderson (sadly wasted in the one role that is largely underwritten) could do, and deserve, better. It's a credit to their performances and the whole shape of the film that the audience are willing to invest in them despite their character faults. Indeed one often sympathises and roots for Martin who, when a serial killer strikes in the town, finds his job as a night guard at the local mortuary not as straightforward or as easy as he first thought.

Praise must also go to the excellent performance by Ulf Pilgaard as the detective investigating the murders and finding a link that seemingly leads back to the mortuary and Martin.

Nightwatch rattles along in a good 90s indie vein with dark humour and a few suspenseful bum clenching moments that will have you screaming at your TV set, all handled with aplomb by the writer and director Ole Bornedal.

5 star film, but not a 5 star DVD release from 'In2Film'

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite films ever - Truly Brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 22, 2003
This is the A1 archetypal reason European cineam wipes the floor with Hollywood every time. Bornedals Nightwatch is an exercise in true brilliance. Its takes a fun premise, and expertly weaves a tale of horror, revulsion, sex, relationships, love, friendship and the best sense of humour in modern european cinema.
Its cast is far superior than the remake, and watching the US version first makes you appreciate how good Bornedals original is. The three central characters are far superior in wit, talent and execution, and are unforgettably charming. The black sense of humour contrasted with such effective and intense chills leaves you gobsmacked.
It is unforgettably frightening, with a conclusion which leaves you talking as the rest of the film so aptly does. You must see this phenomenal picture.
