The most interesting extra feature on the two-disc set is the Nippon Television Special on the making of Spirited Away, not because it's significantly different from American making-of programs, but because the camera crew was allowed to film Miyazaki at work. It's fascinating to watch the visionary director explaining how individual movements should be animated, and even performing the little dance the frog-master does to welcome the No-Face to Yubaba's bath house. (Old animators describe Walt Disney giving similar performances, but no comparable footage exists.) It's also striking to see how intimate Studio Ghibli is, unencumbered by the tiers of management that burden American studios. The scene comparisons enable the viewer to study the storyboards for the film, which Miyazaki draws himself. These simple yet wonderfully vivid images capture the essence of a mood, a movement, an expression. Regarded by many fans and critics as one of if not THE finest anime movie of all time, Spirited Away certainly brings the goods on all counts. Beautiful hand drawn images. Strong child character arcs. Deep dives into Japanese spiritual and mythological motifs and of course plenty of takes on moral questions of love, honesty, greed and the overarching themes of honor and self-sacrifice. The movie is basically a coming-of-age story. 10-year-old Chihiro starts the film as a somewhat clingy, winy, self-interested little girl and immerges a stronger, more thoughtful and independent young women. And as with all Studio Ghibli films Master Miyazaki sprinkles this journey with sly humor and commentary of the human condition. This is certainly a masterpiece but there are many of this genre that can also claim a place in the canon of Anime including other Studio Ghibli film classics. Also, check out the works of Shinkai, Hosoda and of course co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Takahata. All beautiful films with much for children and adults of all ages to enjoy!
This GKIDS Blu-ray rerelease is beautiful to watch with excellent color, detail and an almost 3D feel to many of the hand painted scenes. There's really no DNR or hyped edge enhancement. It's an image that draws you in and lets the artistry of Miyazaki and his group of animators speak for themselves.
The DTS HD audio track is very clear and enveloping with excellent fidelity and a surprisingly full LFE track. Both Disney supervised English dubbed, and original Japanese versions are excellent. This is highly recommended as a start or addition to your Anime collection.

The movie, of course, is wonderful. One of Hayao Miyazaki's best. This review is for the product which arrived today with shrink wrap over the sleeve. I wondered about this because usually the wrapping is on the case not over the sleeve, so I inspected it and, aside from a little bent edges, it looked pristine. Discs Blu-ray and DVD both looked clean and brand new. I bought it to replace an older DVD version which I will be giving to my daughter. A previous reviewer complained of his copy having a missing scene. My copy is complete. (BTW, Hayao Miyazaki is still alive and kicking. As of 8 hours ago, an article had been written about him making remarks on his new film the Boy and the Heron for the Oscars. Not sure why some people think he has passed.).
