The WinTV-PVR-350 supports data rates up to 12Mbits/sec, so you decide how much hard disk space your videos will consume A typical one hour TV show will take 2 gigbytes of hard disk space. Create your own Digital Video Recorder!

After recording your videos to your PCs hard disk, you can play them back on your TV set with the WinTV-PVR-350's hardware MPEG decoder. The hardware MPEG decoder takes no system resources while playing videos on your TV set, so your computer continues to run at full speed. Note: when playing recorded videos on your PC screen, the WinTV-PVR-350 uses a software decoder, which requires a minimum 500 MHz Pentium.

WinTV-PVR-350 uses a highly integrated MPEG-1/2 encoder, compressing your videos while you watch TV on your PC screen. It also has a built-in hardware MPEG decoder with video output, so you can play back your recorded TV shows or home videos on an external TV set or video monitor.

WinTV-PVR-350 can record live television or video from a VCR or camcorder, using as little as 1 GB of hard disk space per hour. Schedule your TV recordings with WinTV-Scheduler, and then edit them with the WinTV-Editor. With the included Ulead DVD MovieFactory, you can also create Video CD's, S-VCD's or DVD's. • Watch TV in a resizeable window (or full screen) on your PC screen. While watching TV, you can surf the net, answer e-mail or do any other PC function.
  • Record your home videos or TV shows to disk using high quality MPEG compression. Create MPEG movies at datarates up to 12 MBits per second, or make VCD or SVCD compatible movies. You typically use 2 Gigabytes of hard disk per hour of recorded video.
  • Play your recorded TV shows, or your edited home videos, from your PCs hard disk out to a TV set.
  • Both SVideo and Composite outputs are included.
  • Pause your TV shows with instant replay, fast forward and rewind.
  • Schedule your TV recording with WinTV-Scheduler.

    • Hardware MPEG2 decoder, so you can watch your recorded TV shows, or your edited home videos, on your TV set!
    • Turn your home video tapes into MPEG movies, then burn them onto CD or DVD!

I have this card installed on a Windows Vista Ultimate system for over a week now and it has worked very well. For the installation, the latest driver(s) were automatically downloaded via Windows Update and installed. I checked and they matched the latest drivers from the Hauppauge web site.

Windows Media Center automatically recognized the card (including the FM radio) and everything worked from there. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was due to a very slight hum that I am hear - but it really is minimal. I am working with Hauppauge support to see if we can resolve or even if it is an issue w/ my PC. I have had good support from Hauppauge!

I bought this card about three weeks ago, installed it, restarted the PC, the new hardware wizard found it and it installed perfectly. I played with it for a few days, set up my TV stations, tried capturing some video off of the TV, etc. Then my hard drive decided to take a vacation so I had to go out and buy a new one. After I installed the hard drive and put all the junk back onto the computer, I noticed that I never got the "found new hardware" alert for this card. Funny. I looked in the device manager, but it wasn't there. I decided to take the card out, turn the computer back on, turn it off again and put the card back in. I did this at least 15 times and the computer didn't recognize the card, even after trying it in 4 differrent slots. Finally, as if some miracle was bestowed upon me, the 16th time I got the glorious indication from Windows XP that it found the hardware! I reinstalled all of the drivers and side programs but the card never worked as nice as it did the first time. Since then I've installed, removed and reinstalled all of the software a bunch of times. I think it's working OK now although the Ulead Movie Maker that came with it does not see my VCR connected to the card even though the WinTV 2000 program does. Funny. So I can watch TV, record TV, pause TV, etc. but not transfer my video tapes to DVD, which was the primary reason for getting this card. My Sonic MyDVD doesn't see the card, Microsoft's Movie Maker doesn't see the card and Ulead, the program that came with the card, doesn't see it. I have an e-mail in to Hauppauge asking them which DVD software actually DOES recognize this card. If trasferring tapes to the computer was as easy as setting up the TV portion of this card, I'd give it four or five stars!

Update 4/6/05 - Soon after writing this review I began to have a problem with this card. I started getting a clicking/popping noise coming out of the right speaker whenever I tried to record a VCR tape to the hard drive. I tried every possible combination of tapes, VCRs and cables but nothing worked. I contacted Hauppauge and they tried to fix the problem but couldn't so they had me return it (on my own dime) and gave me a new one that has the same problem. I'm about out of ideas as this was the primary reason for buying this card. The TV portion works fine and recording off of the TV is fine too. But, for me, the card is usless.

What a headache! This product is just not ready for public release because the software is too unstable. I played with it for almost a week installing, uninstalling, calling tech support, installing updates from the web, trying out beta software fixes - nothing available makes the card work without crashing your entire system. The main problem according to the FAQ is a conflict with other software decoders. Unfortunately, the software conflicts with Real Player, Windows Media Player 9, and Winamp... and nobody uses those... right? But even with all that removed, the program crashes regularly. The capture driver won't work with other programs not provided with the unit such as VirtualDub. Even the ULEAD Movie Factory bundled with the unit won't work because the capture driver does not work - some other unknown program is always using the capture driver. If you forget to scan for channels when the program is first installed, there's no way to rescan for channels and you're stuck with video input only. I have really tried everything anyone could possibly think of the resolve conflicts and get it to work short of a clean install of the operating system with WinTV as the only program. There is no way a typical computer user would ever be satisfied with this product. I'm hoping that at some point in the future Hauppauge will come up with software that works, because the hardware and features were exactly what I wanted... which is why I bought it in the first place.

First off, I bought this card to capture 720 X 480 for DVD quality video, upgrading from a TV wonder VE. Here's what I got:
1. The first card I received had a problem with the audio and had to be returned.
2. To capture from a RCA source you need to use a supplied adapter to go to the s-video input on the card. When using the adapter the video appeared black and white. Straight s-video had color video. Contacted tech support and they explained what to do but it didn't work. Tried the adapter from my laptop to TV and it appeared black and white as well, then tried the adapter that came with the replacement board and it appeared black and white also. Tech support did return my email and the suggesting worked, would of been easier to read it in the documentation.
3. When recording, the default settings record an interlaced video(the horizontal lines). This must then be reprocessed to deinterlace the frames.
4. When recording a show, the record times are in 30 minute intervals. You cannot record 5 minutes before and after the scheduled show. Tech support said "I guess you better have your clock right".
5. The capture drivers are not capatable with my video editing software or other capture hardware.
My opinion of this product is that for the price I paid for it, the software should work, the card should not conflict with other devices and it should work with video editing software. There should be more control over recording duration and the video should be de-interlaced. This product did not deserve the write up it received in PC Magazine. It also doesn't need (in my opinion) it's employees writing positive reviews for it in this forum.
