As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang.

What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen Serenity (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon

Joss Whedon who created this series planned for it to run for seven seasons and instead it only produced 14 and aired 11 before it was canceled (purportedly after the first episode was shown). When Fox ran “Firefly” in 2002/2003 I never heard of it, of course I was busy deploying to Iraq and elsewhere due to this little thing called the Global War on Terrorism (Mal and Zoe would understand). I did see the sequel movie “Serenity” on DVD years later but not having seen the series and lacking that context it didn’t do much for me at the time. Discovering “Firefly” now for the first time all I can say is count me among the “Browncoat” faithful. How did this show not get picked up and run for Whedon’s seven seasons as planned? Given the crud on television today it’s incredible; shows like “NCIS Los Angeles” just keep serving up the same stuff every week and get renewed season after tedious season. Full disclosure; I am not a hard-core Sci-Fi geek. Star Trek TOS, yes, but all the other incarnations of Trek (except JJ Abrams latest films) not so much; original three Star Wars films, yes, the others by Lucas, no way. Nor am I a Whedon disciple, never watched “Buffy” or “Angel” or any of his other TV outings but must say that “Firefly” is brilliant. Maybe if it was called “Young Han Solo” (which is what it’s like in some respects) it may have done better.

The series works on many levels; as a character study it excels. Our nine space travelers all have interesting stories and the charismatic cast gets the viewers buy-in almost from the first episode. Thirteen years later you’ve seen many of these actors in different shows.

That's what a lady friend told me when she first found out that I had brought this along set along to our hotel on a trip. She said so, almost condescendingly, superior-like.

"Yeah, but then you wouldn't get all these extras. And I wanted everything. Everything I can get. I want it all."

Watching the documentaries and interviews and listening to the commentaries is a bittersweet symphony. It's so awesome to live Firefly even harder than ever before. But it also just rubs it in that much more what a gorram, everlovin', cryin' shame it was that they grounded this ship and series.

Coincidentally, she tried to play it off like she wasn't interested in any of the DVD extras. One evening when she turned on the TV in our room, I put the disc in my laptop and started watching with my earbuds on. She must've caught a glimpse of either Mal or Wash, because I caught her craning her neck to see my laptop screen. Busted!

It is fun, creative, with s good mix of action, drama, and love stories rolled into one trans-galactic, warp-speed ride.

The writers did a good job of balancing story-line, episode plots, and character development. The earth is used up, and new moons in the galaxy are being "tera-formed"--some thriving, while others barely survived. A powerful Alliance between the former Chinese and American super powers is still trying to subjugate the galaxy, and the independents, Malcolm a Reynolds among them, lost their battle against them. Refusing to give in, " Mal" acquires an old space craft, and sets his course towards freedom from the oppressive Regime.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds runs his ship, a " Firefly-class transport named Serenity, just as well Kirk or Picard, but true to his anti-hero role, never takes himself to seriously.

I can't decide which is more compelling--Zoe Washburne's loyalty to her commander, fidelity to her husband/pilot Hoban, her ability to handle herself in combat, or those leather combat fatigues! We always know where we stand with Mean Jayne-the mercenary killing machine, but even he surprises himself when he bumps into his own conscience at the point of decision. Inara Serra, the professional "companion", generates as much heat on the screen with the sexual tension between her and the captain, as she does when she shoves off in her shuttle to keep appointments with carefully-chosen, high-end clients. Kaylee Frye is is a beautiful and gentle prodigy with all things mechanical, but can't seem to figure out how to get a date. Last, they pick up the passengers--a " Shepherd" with a hidden past, and Simon and River Tam, a young genius doctor, and his troubled-genius sister.

WHY... HOW... Did this show get cancelled?!?!?!?!?!?!?

This is one of the best series that I've seen. It saddens me greatly that for some reason, it got cancelled.

Joss Whedon's masterwork was cancelled due to the mind-numbing ineptitude of Fox execs. And yet, if it hadn't been under constant threat of cancellation, it might not have been so great. Whedon has said that, because every show might be the last, he approached each one with the notion that if he only had one more story to tell about these characters, what would be the most important story to tell?

This led to masterworks, including the legendary Jaynestown, The Message, Heart of Gold, and Objects in Space, several of which were ironically never broadcast or seen until the CD release after the show was cancelled.

These characters are ordinary people, with the exception of River Tam, but they are placed in extraordinary circumstances, often because of the hunt for River, but just as often by their own rebelliousness and love of the underdog. The characters are given the best dialogue in the Gorram 'Verse, and the actors deliver the best performances of their careers in a set the same size as the ship.

Some people say it's the best TV show ever made.

What other show was turned into a movie after being cancelled one season in?
